Well, it’s time to re-set the “Days Without A PFT Story Regarding The Patriots And Cheating” meter to “OO.”
But this latest topic is an oldie and not-so-goodie. It deals with the team’s “massaging” of the injury report, a phenomenon about which we’ve all been aware for years. A couple of years ago, quarterback Tom Brady played several games with a McNabb-style sports hernia, which was somehow kept under wraps until after the season.
In the days leading up to Super Bowl XLII, Brady again appeared on the injury report with his chronic shoulder injury, but no mention was made of the injury to his ankle that obviously limited him during the game.
Now (and as mentioned in a One-Liner earlier today by MDS), Pats cornerback Ellis Hobbs is speaking candidly about the team’s approach in this regard.
Hobbs has told the story of a very real injury to his groin, which became progressively worse over the course of the season.
“From camp, through the preseason, all the way to the regular season, it started aching a little more each day to where it got to the point where we definitely needed surgery,” Hobbs said.
But yet Hobbs showed up on the injury report only once after December 1.
So what gives?
“We keep things under wraps for a reason,” Hobbs said. “We never want things to leak out. Teams can use it against us, and strategize for players that are going to potentially be there or potentially not be there.”
Um, Ellis? Coach Belichick has scheduled you for another surgery. He thinks you need to have your vocal cords removed.
In our view, the league has been reluctant to nail teams that violate the injury-reporting rules, even when they are caught with a smoking gun in one hand and a cookie jar over the other. In the case of Brady’s sports hernia, we concluded that, as long as the truth doesn’t come out until after the season ends, there will be no repercussions.
And, clearly, other teams play games with the injury reports. Our concerns has been, and still is, that allowing teams to give incomplete information creates an incentive for gamblers and those who are otherwise “mobbed up” to provide envelopes full of cash and other inducements to the guy who washes the jock straps at $7.55 an hour in exchange for access to information about who’s really hurt, and who really isn’t.
Perhaps the reality is that the league has yet to come up with a way to effectively ensure that teams comply with the rules regarding the reporting of injuries, and that the league is content with a system that merely creates a general perception that everyone who is inclined to place (or take) a bet has access to reliable information.

Not true, KY. The New England Patriots Dynasty actually lost a Super Bowl. So, you see, dynasties DO lose Super Bowls.

Unfortunately it is obvious the true punishment in the NFL is for 31 teams. In the ACL ( ALL CHEATING LEAGUE) party of 1, the “Billacheats Traitorets” there is only one rule, which is there are no rules. I hope I am wrong but I am sure everything will be swept under the rug or Billacheat will claim to be illiterate again & not understand English.
Thanks

Before long Pat’s fans, there will be so much crap in your back yard you won’t be able to see the grass…or the pinto.
So, in plain English…a little cheating here and a little cheating there adds up to a bunch of cheating going on.

@ Rob0769 says:
“If Hobbs wasn’t limited in practice, there is no vioation.
Sorry, that theory was tested long ago. In 1994, Cowboys were fined for not disclosing an Aikman thumb injury that didn’t limit him in practice and did not affect his status as the starting QB for the next game.

There is one and only one rule in the NFL these days… don’t embarrass Roger Goodell… he knows that tampering and injury reporting rules are a joke, but he doesn’t want the public thinking he’s a joke by turning a blind eye on rules that truly cannot be enforced.
As such I’m expecting a fine, even though every single coach in the NFL does their best to limit injury information.
I hope that never changes as all these side chess games and strategy is what so many fans love about the NFL - its truly a thinking man’s sport with “espionage” going back to the 1950s and likely even before. http://www.thesportgallery.com/sport-stories/1967aug-nflspy.html
If Goodell keeps this up he’ll succeed in destroying a game that seemed to be going pretty well until the Commissioner began spotting conspiracies around every corner.

Big yawn….. I hate the Pats and can’t wait for their downturn, but ca mon, lots of teams fudge that injury report. Hell, right now D-Mac is going through a little elbow tendinitis that was slow to be revealed, are we going to start jumping on Big Red?
I only hate Belicheck for his stonewalling/George W-esque way of handling the media. He also cheated on his wife and wins without the class of Walsh/Dungy, etc….. Love the players, hate the team; only because Belicheck is a dick and they happen to be on top for now.

From the USA Today article:
“Sometimes when a guy had an ankle (injury), I might list it as a knee, just because I didn’t want people knowing where to take shots at my players,” Cowher says.
The Cheatsburgh Steelers 2005 Super Bowl season is obviously tainted since Cowher admits to lying abouton the injury report.

No one can ever quantify how the Pats’ actions translated into wins. 1, 2, 10?? Just like no one can ever quantify how many more homers Bonds hit due to, well, whatever he did. So Bonds’ record will stand, and so will the Pats’ record. There’s nothing that will ever come of it, so why bother talk about it?
And I’m not a Pats fan, BTW. Final thought, karma is a bitch, so thanks Giants!

Like bleedsorangeandbrown and JMT57 have pointed out in different ways, the injury report either doesn’t matter or didn’t really apply in this case. I’m certainly not some Pats fan defending their team, but this is of very minor concern to me.
Yes, every team violates this rule to different degrees.
Yes, the Patriots bend/break this rule frequently.
No, it doesn’t friggin matter. Every team in the NFL is acutely aware that injury reports are non-binding reports. If you’re playing the Patriots, or any other team, and you base any decisions on a player being listed as “did not practice”, (or as it used to be, “questionable”) then you are ignorant and deserve to suffer for any poor choices you made.

Stooooopid! Hobbs played so whop cares. If he had missed games with an injury that was undisclosed then you might have apoint but that was not the case. Why reveal that kind of stuff if the player is going to play? That would be like telling the other team to go ahead adn throw at him since he can’t run! D’oh.
This is just common sense. Get real.

What’s the difference with what’s posted on an injury report and what the actual injury is? I personally don’t see the relevance in reporting the actual injury. Just list the status, good enough.

Oh Thank Gawd KY, I was getting worried there for a second, a Cheatriots post with out the ubiquitous “Dynasties don’t lose superbowls” comment would just seem empty.
Tell me Fluoride, how do you fix the injury report problem?
You got another brillant idea like your taking away draft picks from teams with players that break the law?
The injury report rules have been a joke for some time, you want to fine the Cheatriots for having Brady always on the injury report with “probable, right shoulder”?

Wrong again Toad: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/2007-11-22-injury-report-cover_N.htm
