Vikings defensive end Jared Allen is thinking big. Really big.
Allen said on Sunday, “We expect to go to the Super Bowl.”
It’s probably not the wisest way to go about staying under radar. But, then again, the Giants showed last year that big talk isn’t necessarily a bad thing. More than a few members of the organization declared that they’d knock off the supposedly invincible Patriots in the Super Bowl. It sounded ridiculous, until Plaxico Burress was hauling in the game-winning touchdown pass.
Safety Darren Sharper was a bit more diplomatic. “The thing that I see as a difference is the attitude of the guys that are here,” he said. “We have an attitude this year like we’re working toward a goal. We’re always working toward a goal, but this year you can definitely sense the guys have a little bit of extra pep in their step because we know we have a good team.”
Though Sharper is treading safer ground here, maybe Allen’s bravado is the better way to make things happen now.
If, of course, Allen and his teammates can back it up.

think of winning the NFC North first, the packers are still the favorite then we will talk about reaching the Superbowl.

unless the Vikings are planning on facing teams with injuries, like the Cowboys had with TO and the Patriots had with Brady. they won’t be winning any Super Bowl like the Giants did. oh, and not having holding called in the most crucial point of a game helps to.

How can people give players crap for statements like this? This is being positive. If you didn’t expect to goto the Super Bowl every year, why would you bother showing up every week? You expect to win every single week.

Jared should contact ex-Vikings coach Mike Tice. He probably still can get his hands on enough Super Bowl tickets so the Vikings can attend.

I’m not a Giants fan, but Henry Plainview’s comments are moronic. The Giants brutally beat the o-lines of both the Cowboys and Patriots. Don’t let the fact they beat GB at Lambeau ruin your horrible argument either…

Hey BucsFan -
Not sure what sources you are looking at but the Pack is NOT still “the favorite”. They are the reigning champs, but if you want to talk “favorites” then that is a matter of conjecture, right? And right now pretty much everyone is projecting a fall-back for the Pack without their Hero/Savior Favre.

I like it. The Vikings could be scary this year. They have a better Defense than Green Bay, a better RB, and now that Favre is [alledgedly] retired… QB is up in the air. I personally think AR will be great, but on paper the Vikings could easily take the NFC-N.

KGB of the Packers announced in the 2nd game of pre-season last year that they were going to go to the Superbowl last year. They came up 1 game short. Does this mean NFC Championship appearance for the Vikings? God I hope not.

Well to be honest the only Giant I heard talking big was Burress with his 21-17 prediction. And he was a lot closer than most anyone predicted! And, he predicted that the week before the SB, not in early June.

That was horrible reporting from the Star Tribune, they really took that quote out of context. From the original article on scout.com:
So, when asked Friday if he embraced the high expectations for the Vikings this year, his answer should have come as no surprise. In his typical style, embraces a Super Bowl challenge. “I hope it’s that high because we expect to go to the Super Bowl and we expect to win and we expect to win our division and do well in the playoffs,” Allen said. “We expect to win. That cannot be put on the backburner anymore, not to say that it has. But I came here because I expect to win and that’s the attitude this organization has. It’s a winning attitude – do whatever it takes to win and that’s all that matters. Let’s win.”
What else would he say, that he expects to lose? Every player, team, coach and owner expects to win, otherwise they wouldn’t be in the league. Allen said exactly what he should have said.

He is just Viking ‘fan’ way of thinking. Every year in the off-season and pre-season, the fans will claim they have a Super Bowl winning team. Then the season starts, the Vikings suck and the ‘fans’ start taking about next year.
Even if it is a fluke year, they will choke at one point. Well I hope they are not in the NFC Championship game, it is enjoyable watching them choke.
Like 1998, I mean Moss had a great year, Cunningham had a great year, R. Smith had a good year. Gary Anderson only missed one kick that year….opps….

As a Vikings fan I am optomistic. However, I too am cautious, as the season hasn’t even started. I do like to confidence of the team, and unlike most people, I think Jackson will do ok. He has had almost a year (starting 12 games on 2007), under his belt. He made some good developmental progress during the last halt of last season. He also has an upgrade at the receiver position, although I do like te receiving corp they had last year (minus iron hands Williamson…now he starts hanging onto the ball geeze. I am very curious to see how the new additions gel with the rest of the team. As for GB, provided Farve really has retired, I am confident that we have as good a shot at the division as they, or anyone else as far as that goes.

The only way the Vikings will see the Superbowl is if Mike Tice can scalp 45 tickets this year. There is a slight chance of that happening since Jax might make it.
I only wish it were true, then the Vikings can lose and take the top spot in Superbowl losses breaking the tie with the Buffalo Bills at 0-4.

You know I would rather have a player who states that his goal
is the Super Bowl than not. I think everyone who is bashing
is missing his point. He feels his team is good enough in the NFC
to go to the Super Bowl. Getting there with Jackson at QB maybe
unrealistic. But I would rather have that attitude than not.
Remember in this day and age of the NFL its not unheard of to
miss the playoffs one year and go to the Super Bowl the next.
Ask the 2000 ravens or 1999 Rams, even the 2003 Panthers

To all you haters, Allen will make the Vikes alot better. You people just wish he was on your sad-sack teams. There’s nothing wrong with lofty goals. I’ll put $ on the Vikings vs any team, especially @ the dome! They will win the North & possibly top-seed in NFC. Who’s the comp., huh. Detroit- no D, no running game, qb’s an int. machine. Chicago- no WRs, weak QBs, old O-line. And Green Gay- unproven QB, Grant’s overrated, he’ll see a stacked line, O-line’s average, old CB’s & pedestrian Safeties. We’ll be 5-1 in our division & need just 4 more W’s. Minnesota is solid up & down the roster + good depth. Both lines are solid, best RB duo, fast & productive LB’s, young & athletic CBs, playmaking Safeties + we’ve upgraded the WR corp. TJ will surprise everyone this year, watch. So, talk trash all you want. But, I KNOW WHO MY MONEY$ ON IN 08!! Don’t hate, appreaciate.

Razon,
You make zero sense. You hope they don’t make it to the NFC championship games because you like to watch them choke? So, wouldn’t you really want them in the SB? The ultimate stage to choke on. Please make sure your s-talking actually makes sense. I’m going to assume you are a Lions fan.
Oh yeah…its oops, not opps.
