Seahawks receiver Bobby Engram has been avoiding all voluntary offseason workouts as an expression of his desire for a new contract.
Engram, the team’s leading receiver in 2007, now says he might not show up for the start of training camp.
“It’s a possibility,” Engram said Sunday. “We’ll see what happens.”
Signed through 2008 at a salary of $1.7 million, Engram wants “a couple-year extension.”
The Seahawks reportedly won’t re-do Engram’s deal. One of the realities in this regard is that Engram is 35 years old.
Another reality is that it now costs more than $15,000 to avoid a day of training camp. Also, a holdout could immediately expose Engram to owing the Seahawks 25 percent of his signing bonus allocation for 2008. Since he received $880,000, that translates to $110,000. If he doesn’t play at all in 2008, he’ll owe the Seahawks $440,000.
So we think he’ll be there.

“One of the realities in this regard is that Engram is 35 years old.” The other reality is he’s their best WR.

25% of $880,000 is $220,000 not $110,000

Poor Bobby, only earning $1.7M this year. Must be tough. If things contunie to be this dire, he’ll have to break into an apartment and steal a stereo to help make ends meet…

I wonder how much pull Jim Mora gets on this decision.
