Browns center LeCharles Bentley, who hasn’t participated in a practice or in a game since blowing out a patellar tendon in his first training-camp session with the team nearly two years ago, could be back on the field as soon as Tuesday.

Bentley reportedly will undergo a physical at the Cleveland Clinic on Monday.  If he passes, he’ll be able to participate in the team’s mandatory minicamp, which opens on Tuesday.

Whether the team wants him there is a separate question.  He has a $605,000 base salary for 2008, which is now the final year of his contract with the team.  If he is cleared and then suffers a season-ending injury while practicing, the team will be on the hook for the full amount of the salary.

The Browns have moved on, despite giving big money to a guy who has to date contributed not a thing to the cause.  If he can still play, however, there’s a chance that he’ll be given some work at right guard.

Bentley’s recovery from the torn tendon was marred by a staph infection.  The problem was so bad that doctors at one point thought about amputating a portion of Bentley’s leg.
