UMBF, i hear what you're saying, but rape is a violent assault inflicting power and humiliation on a victim. It's not "sex" even if it involves a sexual organ. It's a violent crime, and rapists are violent criminals.

The rule against sexual content is patently to warn against guys posting nudie links or pics of naked women. I still think it stinks of damage control over resigning Stevens.

However, I was wrong earlier saying the ban is on the team's official site - I didn't realize the TBBB is a fan site.

"How is watching a rapist play football different from anyone else playing football? Kids wouldn’t know he’s a rapist."

Unless someone told them, or they read it somewhere. No, you wouldn't know just by looking, but in this age of the internet and 24 hour news channels, it's a lot easier to run across information like that by accident than it used to be. The more trouble a guy like Stevens gets into, the more his past will be talked about, the more people will know about his past. If the Bucs are so concerned about PR, they shouldn't have taken him on. I realize that the same people aren't running both the team and the board, but the Bucs as an organization have ultimate jurisdiction over both and any double standard between the two is of their own actions or inactions.

C'mon Mr. Florio...
This is irresponsible reporting at it's worst. ANYONE that read the thread that the TBBB moderator posted should have enough requisite intelligence to realize that the discussion of whether or not Stevens should be on the Bucs is perfectly allowed. This includes YOU Mr. Florio.

To insinuate that the Bucs Organization is trying to deny negative discussion obviously didn't do their homework. Unless the Glazers AGREE that Jon Gruden should be fired, or that the Bucs probably won't make the playoffs next year.

The Glazers do not moderate the forum. They may read it on occasion, but the senior posters run the forum.

Over-moderation? Are you kidding me? If anything, the biggest complaints over there are from posters complaining that NOT enough is being done to protect THEIR bruised egos.

Shame on you, Mr. Florio.

In the pursuit of accuracy (not sure that's going to matter here) I posted the un-edited comments by the Bucs moderator:

The article is not allowed to be discussed on these boards.

The only reasons for this are:

1. If linked to, it will contains words which are censored here, and will thus be consided by-passing the censors.

2. The article brings up, to paraphrase, forcing someone into sexual activities. That topic is not allowed here.

Anyone posting the article, or linking to it, will be suspended. This does not mean you are not allowed to disuss Stevens, however, let's keep 1 and 2 out of it, shall we?

This is a warning as much as a favor.
------------------

Correct me if I'm wrong (first time for everything) but does it not expressly say that this does not mean you are not allowed to discuss Stevens? It looks to me that the contents of the article (i.e. rape) are seen as not becoming of a family board. If you do a search under my username over there I believe you'll find quite a number of posts regarding Stevens and the "instance" in question and my feelings regarding him being on the team. I have yet to receive a susupension, or a message from the Glazers asking me to cease and desist.

If you're going to bag another board at least have your shit together and know what the hell you're talking about Florio. Hell, if you play your cards right, maybe users won't be suspended for linking to your "insider" reports as fact over there when they consistently turn out to be crap.

UMBF - I disagree that this is being blown out of proportion by PFT. The TB mods (I'm talking back in Jan/Feb when the news article came out - I can't vouch for recent events) did not warn anyone, send PMs, or post any notices/stickies, as they would for any other "censor" infraction. It was ridiculous, they were immediately deleting threads that were simply about asking why any/all of the J. Stevens thread were being struck down.

They reacted in a very heavy-handed manner, and one could not help but feel they were trying to bury the issue.

I have no doubt that if they could stop us from talking about it elsewhere, they would certainly try. I'm sure they are reacting to this PFT post with their usual disclaimer, "profootballtalk.com is not recognized by the TBBB as a reliable source for NFL news..." blah blah

Other comments here are right on - the sad thing is that he's accused of acts so abhorrent, that they can't even be spoken of - yet he has faced no consequence because he has the physical *potential* to be a monster on the field.

So far the ends have not come close to justifying the means.

"But it’s ok for them to watch a rapist play?"

How is watching a rapist play football different from anyone else playing football? Kids wouldn't know he's a rapist.

Again, I'm not condoning the signing of Stevens. He should have never been in the NFL in the first place and I'm madder than hell that he's still on the Bucs roster. However, Florio completely misunderstood that message board post.

albaNY Hawker has it exactly right...the Bucs message board has much higher standards than the Bucs have for their players. Probably due to the fact that they are not run by the same people.

Florio sucks!! I'll be back in five minutes to check for new stories.

If you hate Mike so much, there's lots of other sources for NFL stories.

Rock on, florio.

Did you know that Stevens went to the same high school as Jonathan Stewart? AND the punter for Cornell?? Pretty interesting, huh?

"Rape is “sexual content”?? Dude, go see a shrink.

Thanks for posting that, though, because it clears up there was no rule against discussing a player’s criminal background in the first place. This is damage control, pure & simple. "

You're trying to say rape is not sexual content? The definition of rape is "a form of assault involving the non-consensual use of the sexual organs of another person's body." How is that not sexual?

This is not damage control, this is the board moderator (again, veteran member of the board, not actual team employee) asking members to remember the rules of the board. They don't want kids that log onto the Bucs site to wind up reading about rape. That's ALL this is. I hate Stevens as much as the next guy for what he did, and I don't want him on the team, but this particular story about the TB message board has been completely blown out of proportion.

Great. You can't TALK about the things that Stevens DID.

In other words, the Bucs have higher standards for their forums than they do for their roster!

How many stories about the bucs are you going to write before the start of the season. Save some of the negative stuff you have against them until their playoff run in 2008.

The Cowboys have signed Pacman, are you aware of that and he was involved in shooting incidents where Steven was never been taken to court to whatever he was accused of.

All of you sport writers had no problem of him coming out of college and being drafted by the Seahawks, but when the bucs resigned him all of the sudden, all these allegations and accusation come out.

He is innocent until he is proven guilty.

Thanks for posting this story Florio. There were a lot of killed threads discussing Stevens on TBBB the days after the Seattle Times expose... What happened with a lot of them is the mods would come by after we started discussing and gave us a warning, "Don't link to the story" for the reasons given above. So the thread would live for awhile and we'd have a good discussion going and then some jack-off would come in and eventually post the link. Even if you agree with their interpretation of these "family" rules, the thing that pissed me off was that the Bucs never deleted or censored just the offending post - nor did they just close the thread - they deleted the whole thing. So our discussions went back to square one, new people coming in never heard about the story, and the cycle continued... I haven't been back there since.

That's news to me that mods aren't team employees - either way they cetainly have an agenda over there.

Rape is "sexual content"?? Dude, go see a shrink.

Thanks for posting that, though, because it clears up there was no rule against discussing a player's criminal background in the first place. This is damage control, pure & simple.

Gotta love the few Bucks fans that come on here and call it a dead issue. Didn’t he just get suspended ANOTHER two games? Doesn’t sound dead to me. Kudos again PFT for calling out the bad apples.

Actually no he didn't just get suspended another 2 games but don't let the fact get in the way of your holier than thou agenda will you?
Those 2 games were known about long ago and come from a previous issue, he was allowed to push them forward to this season. He's still done nothing while being under 1 year low salary contracts with the Bucs, why not bash away at the Hawks who used a 1st rounder on the the guy and gave him a long term big money contract much closer to the time of the already know about alleged crime.
If you must whine at least spread your blame to places it's far more deserved.

Heaven forbid someone doing their homework before stating an uninformed opinion.

Rules of the Bucs Message Board are clear:

Offensive Content: Members are prohibited from posting or LINKING CONTENT containing racial & religious slurs, ethnic slurs & jokes, SEXUAL CONTENT, illegal content, hate groups, GRAPHIC OR DISTURBING CONTENT, profanity, discussions about illegal drugs, joking about or making light of player injury, or any other offensive content whatsoever, whether used as an example to make a point or in a more direct and malicious manner.

Bypassing The Censor: Members are prohibited from attempting to bypass the built-in sensor mechanism that automatically replaces profanity and other banned words & phrases with a series of asterisks. Bypassing is any action to thwart the intended function of the sensor, such as attempting to divulge the actual censored word or words by means of using other spellings, symbols, rhymes, or any facsimiles thereof.

If members have a problem following the rules there are plenty other options out there to discuss the situation. You wouldn't be missed there.

Clarifying Jerramy Stevens' status

Okay, I think we're just about sick of Jerramy Stevens, but I want to clear up some misinformation about his status with the league.

General manager Bruce Allen told the St. Petersburg Times today that the NFL will soon announce a suspension of at least two games for Stevens, but this one is totally unrelated to his one-game suspension served last season.

When Stevens was arrested in March 2007 in Scottsdale, Ariz., he was charged with both a DUI and possession of marijuana. Last year's suspension was for the marijuana violation. That case was dismissed but only after Stevens completed a drug diversion program, according to a court official in Maricopa County, Ariz. He also was convicted on the DUI charge but was not immediately disciplined because the case was being appealed. Now that the case has run its course in the judicial system, Allen said the NFL is expected to announce an additional suspension of at least two games. The Bucs anticipate the league will reserve the right to add a third game to the suspension depending on Stevens' "behavior", though it's unclear exactly how all that will be determined.

Stevens was suspended and docked two games' pay by the league in November for the marijuana offense. He said today he had no knowledge of the league's plans to assess further discipline. He also, according to a league official, has no say in how and when his suspension is served.

Allen said Stevens in all likelihood will miss the first two games, at New Orleans and at home against the Falcons.

... from blogs tampabay .

Just the facts, best as I can determine.

Glad to see Florio covering what I believe is becoming an increasing (and disturbing) trend in the NFL --- the teams moderating their own message board in such a way as to promote certain agendas and players, and to squelch discussion of the most controversial (and thus interesting) topics.

I've seen countless examples of dissenting and critical opinions that run counter to the team's marketing campaign that seem to routinely result in message board bannings, even when no profanity is used.

As a result, some of the team-run boards have become downright boring, as the most interesting posters always seem to get their accounts deleted.

Keep these stories coming, Florio!

Hey Florio,
It's obvious you have a hard on for Gruden, the Bucs and news from 8 years ago. Get in line with the Dungy loving ,war mongering Gruden haters. Since Jeremy's college days, he's played several years for the Shawks, Bush has been elected twice, we went to war with Iraq and the Patriots (hahahaha) have went 18-doh while becoming the asteric of the NFL as cheaters inc.
It's obvious your traffic is increasing however you will earn very little money because your content is lame and does not bring buyers. BTW, for those of you new to TB inc home MB, most real fans that value their time don't spend it there any more due to the lack of freedom of expression. What a surprise.

What is pretty funny here is that almost every draftnik on here knew all about Shockey's indiscretions BEFORE Seattle drafted him and since he's come into the league he has been an alcoholic and bad tenant but not a violent criminal. Since he signed with the Bucs last season he hasn't done anything wrong... why wasn't there more outrage last season? This guy's police record hasn't grown since coming to Tampa and yet the Bucs are being crucified for re-signing a guy that hasn't committed a crime since becoming a Buccaneer while not much was thought of it when he originally signed with the team. STOOOOPID!

I'm not a fan of Stevens, but why is this old news suddenly shocking news? Everybody in the NFL knew about this guy's police record last season and the negative press surrounding his signing in 2007 was minimal... the only difference between now and then is that Stevens has gone well over a year without a problem and has possibly shown he has finally learned. Let's all crucify him now, 5-6 years after the alleged crime but give the Seahawks a free pass despite drafting him or give the Bucs a free pass for last season's signing.

How is this "old news"?

To break it down into bite-sized chunks: Story #1) Stevens the scumbag TE was resigned by the Bucs. Story #2) the Tampa Bay brain trust is forbidding their fan base from discussing this on the official site.

Those are different stories, even though one guy (Stevens) figures prominently in both stories.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Bulletin Board is moderated by veteran members of the board, not by the actual team. It has always had very strict rules about what can be posted there. They consider it a family board and discussing rape isn't exactly child friendly.

They've obviously had no problem allowing other Stevens threads to remain: http://bbs.buccaneers.com/showthread.php?t=160042

TBBB has long been known by Buc fans as one where the power has gone to the moderator's heads, so their reaction isn't surprising.

Why is there all this outrage now? The same information was brought up a year ago without all this moral indignation, and Stevens was squeaky clean last season.

The rally against Stevens is spearheaded by Tampa sports talk radio's biggest loudmouth, Steve Duemig. Duemig has/had a mancrush on Mike Alstott and felt Alstott was not respected or used enough by Bucs' HC Jon Gruden. As a result Duemig has made it his personal crusade to tear down Gruden, Bruce Allen and the Bucs. As mentioned in an earlier post, Florio considers Duemig his friend, and voilà, the story shows up at PFT twice in the last couple of days.

Usually Florio plays both sides of the fence in a controversy to stir debate and interest, I'll be interested to see whether or not he does in this case.

I hope the Bucs go down in flames this season.

If Stevens plays as well as he did in the Super Bowl ("and he drops it") that should be a given.

Years ago, I gave up on the NBA because of the number of "thugs" who were allowed to continue play and have their indiscretions quietly swept away from the PR magnet. They were not the type of guys I'd want my son admiring. Now, we see the same thing happening in the NFL. Granted, Goodell is attempting to make changes, but there is only so much he can do if owners continue to employ dirtbags like Stevens. I'm pretty sure that at some point, fans will begin to feel the same way as we felt about the NBA (and their declining numbers bear me out). Either the owners get a clue and kick morons/criminals to the curb, or we'll spend our dollars elsewhere. How do you explain to your kid that one guy commits rape and goes to prison while another goes on to millions of dollars and a professional football career. Way to go Tampa Bay.

It's not at all unusual for a message board to block negative comments (if it's a moderated company-run message board) although it does anger members. Message boards are a place for a ton of negativity.

That said, I agree that signing this wreck of a human being to an NFL contract deserves whatever negative comments it brings.

its funny. i tried to register for their official site, and they require that you do not have a free email account like my gmail. i am guessing many others, as i was going to do, were going to troll their site and ask why this prick is getting another year. if you guys haven't had a chance to read the details of what really went down at the u of wash, would suggest it. this guy should be in jail for what he did not out defending his right to play football. hey, i guess he is taking the heat off of another POS in pacman jones. thanks for that one dallas.
