Patriots quarterback Tom Brady addressed a media gathering today for the first time since the Super Bowl. And based on a reading of the transcript of his comments, the Associated Press appears to have misunderstood a joke he made about the ankle injury that got so much attention in February.
Both the Boston Globe and Boston Herald posted this verbatim transcript of a question and Brady’s answer:
How is the ankle and were you able to participate in the off season program as much as you have in the past?
“The ankle feels great. Yeah. It feels really good. I’ve been able to do pretty much everything. I’m still slow. I still can’t jump. I still don’t lift very much. That hasn’t changed.”
Brady seems to be making a self-deprecating joke about his lack of athleticism, but only after clarifying that “the ankle feels great.”
But the AP article suggests that Brady is still hurting. The first sentence of the AP article says, “Brady says he is slow and can’t jump because of lingering effects of an ankle injury late last season.”
No, that’s not what Brady said. He said he is slow and can’t jump because he’s slow and can’t jump. Maybe this is why the Patriots usually don’t talk to the media about injuries at all.

It’s important for media members to be ingrained in society and understand gestures and jokes, or they are simply jokes themselves.

The beginning of a long line of Patriots scrutiny….. No fear. They will use that as motivation. This media crew is the same crowd that will be licking their butts for an interview as the season unfolds. BTW, that entire staff from ESPN… nothing but gasbags. Cindy Brunson and Sage Steele are easy on the eyes but the rest of the news anchors are sickening. How about that old lady Linda Cohn? I say she is a candidate for AARP spokesperson.

Wow, one might think that a newspaper might excel at reading comprehension since it is… you know… their job to communicate through written words.
Fascinating.

Wow, talk about literal minded. Brady has always been very self depreciating about his physical abilities. He jokes about it all the time. Has this reporter never covered his press conferences before? Idiot.

this has become very common and is the result of the downsizing of news departments everywhere. there is no easy way to monetize the effort given the demise of the business model of newspapers with so many alternative outlets providing free real-time information.
and while the variety and free speech offered by the net sounds like a good replacement, i’m guessing what will happen in the absence of the independent news departments is we’ll get the pap that the “news departments” of the future can suck up from the government and corporate spin doctors (no effort or expense required) and then in the vacuum where real reporting used to live, internet rumors, lies, and damn lies will spice things up. ought to be some tasty recipe….
