New England Patriots offensive lineman Nick Kaczur, who was identified this week as a cooperating witness in a drug investigation, practiced on Friday with his team as part of a mandatory minicamp.
Kaczur was arrested on April 27 for possession of a controlled substance. He later wore a wire and made further purchases of OxyContin tablets from his supplier, Daniel Ekasala.
“The legal process is taking its course,” coach Bill Belichick said. Kaczur did not speak to reporters. Previously, Kaczur said that he knew nothing about the situation; the other available evidence seems to dispute that. Strongly.
Though Kaczur apparently will escape criminal penalties due to his cooperation, the NFL could take a close look at the situation, especially if Kaczur failed to report the initial arrest to the team or to the league.
Also, the presence of a “snitch” in the locker room could create a little awkwardness for Kaczur, and likewise could result in a split between players who support Kaczur’s decision to get “wired up” and those who believe that he sold out the guy who previously had been providing the drugs that Kaczur was buying.

Jawad, you’re awesome. The Patriots locker room is sealed tight, they have their backs and support each other, and at worst it’s a small disagreement that doesn’t go public. Adam Vinatieri confirmed this, when asked the differences between the Colts and the Patriots, and he actually talked about how it was similar the teams were in the sense that it was very much a team, and the locker rooms were very tight and people supported each other. Other players have made mistakes, Kaczur was obviously trying to cut a deal with authorities to stay out of trouble, and as questionable that may be in terms of his character, among the players it shouldn’t have any effect.

Without knowing all the details, I would support Kaczur’s courage to do what he did, albeit maybe under some pressure from the constabulary.Part of moving on from a mistake is to be part of the solution.
Those who oppose “snithching”, perpetuate wrong doing and crime of all sorts. They obviously have no concern about anything but what they perceive to be there own welfare. The rest of locker room has a right to question their loyalty to the team as well.

If cooperating on a criminal investigation is being a “snitch”, then we need a few more of those. Florio, if you think the Patriots players would be against Kaczur cooperating with this, then you’re too far out there.

Do they make bulletproof shoulder pads? I hope none of the key Patriots, like Brady, hang around with this guy. I’d be worried about stray bullets. Training camp is going to be interesting. Serpentine! Serpentine!

Of course he practices. He was only trying to be the best player he could be, those who weren’t taking oxycontin were cheating their teammates of their best effort. I salute you, Mr. Kaczur. You are the perfect Patriot.

From what I’ve read it sounds like he was buying an awful lot of pills–something like $3900 for 100 pills “every few days”. Anyone know how many of these one takes? If it’s one or two a day, then anyone else think that Mr. K may have been doing more than personally taking them himself? Don’t get me wrong–I hope Nick gets the help he needs personally for his addiction, but this is just a little weird. If he was distributing them on, who else could he possibly know who might be in need of pain medication, hmmmm?
