Steve Smith may not be feeling Dwayne Jarrett’s ability to help the Panthers win in 2008 but he’s sold on Jake Delhomme.
In fact, after yesterday’s practice Smith told reporters that he feels like Delhomme is even stronger than he was before he underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. “Yeah, I think so. I can tell he worked out real good; you can see the difference inĀ his body,” Smith said. “I’m going to say he looks better. It seems like he has a stronger arm; he’s not showing any signs of weakness with that major surgery.”
It’s been said that pitchers who have the surgery come back with a stronger arm but it usually takes a full year, at minimum, for them to get back into action. Delhomme had his operation a little more than six months ago, putting him well ahead of that timetable.

we’ll see how good Delhome says his arm feels after he gets smacked around a little bit by 300 pound D-linaman.

I hope this year turns out okay. I was hoping for a new QB, but all they picked up was an old WR and a HACKett with a bum knee.
All that combined with a horrible O-line. Good luck Smitty….who can you get to step up?
The money for my PSL’s may need to go to better things next year.

Glad to hear that Jake is looking better than ever. He had a hot start last season before getting hurt.
Steve Smith was made by Jake Delhomme. He will prove the haters wrong this year. Comeback Player of the Year for sure. You can believe that.

The throwing motion for a QB is much different than that for a pitcher. One who has decent mechanics, with an overhand motion (as opposed to sidearm), doesn’t use or stress the elbow nearly as much as a pitcher, who has to snap off certain kinds of tosses that put tremendous strain on the new ligament (especially for a slider). I don’t think it is a great shock that Delhomme could throw reasonably well now. Still best to be careful.
