A replaced ACL takes almost a year to recover from for two reasons: 1) the new ligament has to be completely biochemically re-formed, and there is simply no substitute for time, no matter how cute the rehab program is- at this stage, Rivers' replacement ACL is about half as strong as was his original one, so the chance of re-tearing it with any contact at all are pretty high; and 2) his proprioception (has to do with motor control and reflexes) are substandard- slower, less sure and less stable. The knee sensor system has to be completely retrained, like a stroke patient- and that also takes a lot longer than 6 months.
