So much for a guy mellowing with age.

As Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren, known in some league circles as the “Big Show,” gets ready for his final year of coaching the team (and, presumably, any NFL team), Holmgren is showing that he can still chew asses with best of them.

The most recent targets are the team’s young receivers, who are expected to help Deion Branch, Nate Burleson, and Bobby Engram in the passing game.  With Branch nursing a knee injury that will keep him out of action until September and Engram staying away from voluntary workouts as he tries to get more money, there have been plenty of chances for the new guys to attract Holmgren’s attention.

This week, Holmgren reportedly “screamed at” receiver Ben Obomanu before turning his wrath to receiver Logan Payne.

“They could make a mistake last year, run a completely different play, and the coaches were like:  ’That’s OK.  He doesn’t know what he’s doing,’” Burleson said.  “But now, they’re held at a higher standard.  They’re responsible to go out there and perform like a starter.”

Said receiver Courtney Taylor, another guy who has gotten an earful:  “You want that hands-on attention, especially from a guy like Coach Holmgren, who you respect.  When he’s down my throat or someone else’s throat, you look at it like:  If he’s not saying anything to you, you might be on your way out the door.”

After listening to enough of Holmgren, however, being on the way out the door might be a good thing.
