Dolphins running back Ricky Williams has, for the first time in five years, a full off-season to get himself ready to play. And the coaches in Miami are raving about his preparation.
”Within his individual drills, I see the guy working hard to get better,” Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said, per Jeff Darlington of the Miami Herald. “I think the guy shows up each day, and he has a purpose when he practices. He wants to get better at something each and every day. When you sit down and talk to him, he’ll tell you those things.”
Williams announced his retirement before the 2004 season, came back after serving a four-game drug suspension in 2005, spent 2006 in Canada after being suspended for the entire season, and then finally returned to the NFL in November of 2007, only to suffer a season-ending injury in his first game back.
Now he says that he likes what he’s doing in Miami, and that he’s working harder than ever.
”It’s different around here,” Williams said. “This is the hardest I’ve worked. [Former] coach [Nick] Saban worked us pretty hard, but I think this new regime is making every single person on the field prove themselves. Not just prove they can play football — but prove they are going to lay it on the line on a consistent basis.”
The 31-year-old Williams likely doesn’t have much gas left in the tank, but he says he’s going to prove that he will, in fact, lay it on the line this year.

This guy is a bum. He was the best player on this team when he quit leaving them a large void which they are still trying to recover from. I still struggle to understand how anyone who was on this team when this happened can call him a teammate.

No gas? Sheesh, do make this stuff up? The guy has barely played in the last three years! He’s got plenty left. Normally I like what you have to say and I know this is a blog so you are writing off the cuff, but put some thought into things, will you, please?

Even if he has no purpose in life other than to keep Ronnie Brown fresh this season, he’ll do just fine for my taste. And if he does something stupid again, it’s not really a big loss… second string running backs are plentiful in this league. Any actual production out of #34 is just a bonus.

ya… right… THAT’S what’s happening.
seatofmypants- why would the Dolphins trade Ricky when he costs them so little? If you’ve got a 1980 Porsche in your garage which you only paid, say… $10,000.00 for would you trade it for a brand new Hundai?
if anything this item should be criticized as “old hat” since everytime Ricky works out infront of new coaches they are always incredibly impressed with his work ethic.

How can you say he doesn’t have much gas left in the tank? He may be 31, but he hasn’t played hard every year since he came out. He was out 1.5 years for suspension, then missed all of last year (im not counting 2 quarters of a game as playing). so right there is almost 3 years of not playing and putting wear on the tires. His body is probably realistically 28 years old.

“Doesn’t have much gas left in the tank”? Based on his limited playing over the past several seasons, it’s just the opposite: Ricky Williams has much more gas left in the tank than the average 31-year-old RB in the NFL.

Who would have thought that with Bill Parcells in charge we would see the Dolphins trying to dump Jason Taylor while lauding the efforts and hard work of Ricky Williams. Maybe T.O. was right that Parcells has lost it.

If you subtract the time spent out of football, Ricky is actually a middle-mileage running back. He has always looked after himself when playing football, and has not suffered any significant lower body injuries, which are usually the sort of injuries that debilitate running backs and ultimately force them into retirement. He may have 3-4 more top-flight seasons in him.
As for the drug usage…please, let’s get real about this. People are hammering him for that while whistling past other forms of criminal malfeasance like spousal abuse, assault, DUI, dangerous driving etc?
We need to start calibrating our collective value systems a bit better, and I’m including the NFL in that naive and idealistic hope.

Seeing his limited action for several years, he should have plenty left!

Personally I don’t understand why we are putting all this faith into the guy again. Seems I seen this storyline before: fall into the ricky-trap, get a crappy vet qb, no wide receivers that can catch the ball. This is our new regime’s awesome thinking???
