Steve Reed of CarolinaGrowl.com has an interesting story about Panthers wide receiver Dwayne Jarrett, who is coming off a rookie year in which he caught just six passes.
Most of the story is about the way Jarrett is working hard at making the transition to the NFL and becoming the contributor the Panthers thought he’d be when they chose him in the second round of last year’s draft.
But the most interesting part of the story comes from Jarrett’s teammate, Steve Smith. When asked if he’s seen a change in Jarrett’s approach to the game, Reed writes that Smith “dodged the question and bypassed lavishing praise,” instead simply saying, “We’re all here to play football. That’s what we’re here to do.”
That’s just the latest sign that Smith isn’t impressed with Jarrett. Previous signs include Smith saying of Jarrett in April, “You’re here to play football. You do the party scene at your own discretion, but on Sundays, we’re here to play football.” And Smith saying to Jarrett in October, “Why don’t you go watch some film?”
Jarrett might some day be a good enough receiver to justify that second-round draft pick the Panthers spent on him. But Smith won’t hide the fact that he doesn’t think Jarrett is there yet.

He’s just adding to the long list of overhyphed USC Alumni (are they still alumni, when they don’t actually graduate?). Maybe one day all the scouts will realize that just because they have an easy schedule, get paid illegally, and get marketed by the media universe, doesnt mean they are any good.

I have no issues with Smith’s comments, though I feel he should keep it private. Then again, he probably tried that first, and now he’s trying to use public shaming as a tactic. It’s not the way you would want a leader to act, but when it comes to standout WRs in the NFL Steve Smith is currently among the better role models in the league for a young player…hopefully Jarrett doesn’t listen this year and Philly’s pick gets better.

Hasn’t Smith not been impressed with Jarrett for a long time now? Is this new news or just old news recycled?

Smitty has pretty much earned the right to say whatever he wants. Hopefully it will light a fire under Jarret because the guy has the size and talent to be a solid #2 reciever. Obviously he’ll never be a burner like Smith but, he can still be a solid contributor to our offense. I feel like as soon as Jarret goes out on the field and starts putting up good numbers Smith will recognize that too.
GO CATS!!!

How about writing something ligitimate about the team instead of trying to find negative stories? Smith obviously dodged the question because Jarrett still has a lot to prove to him. This is OLD news, and dredging it up again to create negative press after Smitty refrained from making a comment is just weak.

No surprise. Smith called him out last year when he was talking to the press and told him then he should spend more time watching game films. When he was drafted, fans and the coaches expected him to be the # 2 WR. Which was the reason they cut Keyshawn. He didn’t study the play book and didn’t pay attention watching game film.
His dissappointment last year was the reason the Panthers brought in Moose and TJ Hackett.

Four different QBs in one year might make a difference. But I guess your I C Light infected brain never thought of that.

He redid his rookie contract a couple of years ago. Two comments from people who need to keep their comments to their own teams since the know nothing of the Panthers.
Next?

When there is not anyone else on the team that can catch a freaking ball thrown to them, then yea, it going to be Smith Smith Smith!!!Yea, didn’t get as many balls last year from the 4 different QBs throwing to him, but it had nothing to do with the # of QBs throwing to him at all. But yet everyone wants to give the Panther hell for not drafting a QB this year but blame Smith’s success on Delhomme. Can’t have it both ways people.
Weird! Yea, he’s 5’9” and how many WR 6’0” or more play like him?
Less than 5.

I can’t believe that there is a ’skins fan on here trying to bash Steve Smith, the ’skins haven’t had a solid wideout since Art Monk. Who do you have now? Randle El? Moss? What do their numbers look like and what do they bring to the table? If Smitty lined up in burgundy and yellow I doubt very seriously that you would have one bad thing to say about the guy.

Hey I C light pounder, since Smith is so terrible maybe you can explain why he was ranked the #12 receiver and still posted 1,000+ yards with four starting QBs.
