Marvin Lewis and the Bengals are taking a “I’ll believe it when I see it” approach to Chad Johnson’s claim that he’ll be at next week’s mandatory minicamp.
The head coach spoke about his absent wide receiver after Wednesday’s practice and sounded resigned to the soap opera’s continuation. “I really think that’s not what was said. No.1, he’s not here. No.2, it’s something he said a while back, a long time ago. So it’s really not a concern. Chad has a contract to play football. He has to make some decisions on his own. We’re not concerned about those things, about players who aren’t here. When mandatory work begins, you have steps you can take.”
That sounds much more in line with Drew Rosenhaus’s announcement yesterday than Ocho Cinco’s proclamation earlier this week. Carson Palmer echoed his coach’s statements and longtime Bengal Willie Anderson told the Cincinnati Enquirer that however it plays out, it plays out.
“We played with (running back) Corey (Dillon). We didn’t have a problem with him. We played with (wide receiver) Carl Pickens. Basically you have to go with how he says things. Whatever he says he’s going to do you have to take his word that he’s going to do that.”
Ah, yes, the halcyon Carl Pickens/Corey Dillon era. I’m sure many Bengal fans are eager to relive those years which Ryan Wilson of the FanHouse points out resulted in exactly zero winning seasons.

The irony in mentioning Carl Pickens is that Chad Johnson not only broke Pickens’ franchise reception record, but he may also end up being subject to the “Carl Pickens Clause”, causing him to forfeit signing bonus money. There must be something wrong with all that Ohio River water.

Long contracts are undefeated.
The real question is when he shows up, can he and his QB kiss and make up?

well, you know florio, zero winning seasons durring the pickens/dillon era and only one winning season and since ‘91 is a pretty difficult feat to accomplish.

Chad Johnson is an ignorant ass, he is the stereo-typical self centered overpaid athlete who cries and whines on his own behalf and never once considers his teammates. He performed in a child-like worldwide sports network tour that he was going to hold out of training camp and when no one in management took him seriously and called his bluff, he once again showed its all about the money at this point and is trying to retract his statement. He had a great time on all those sports talk shows with all the stuffed shirts from ESPN all laughing along with him and kissing his ass just like he wanted. But reality has set in (partially) and he now knows that the folks who actually have the power are showing it. I have never been a Bungles fan, but in this situation they have my support 110%.

Get it Chad? No one cares anymore. Not your QB, not your coach, not your teammates, and not the fans. Do what you want because good or bad for the Bengals, nobody cares anymore.

All Teams must move on. I think media is make a bigger deal out of Chad vs Bengals than what it really is. Chad say’s he will be there, He also said he wasn’t going to play for the Bengals. The Bengals seems to be looking at team with or without Chad. Let’s just wait and see.

this report is bullsh*t. you wrote this story and then put carson palmer/marvin lewis/willie anderson quotes to put a make it sound like a negative situation. everybody knows chad will be there and everybody knew chad would show up even though he was talking sh*t. with or without him the offense is lethal. the defense needs to step it up. and i must mention the defense sucked as bad as it did last year because of injury. we’ll win the afc north this year you watch.

The Bengals would be better off without him. Teamwork wins championships. Stars win trips to the pro bowl and get on individual leader boards, but team players win it all.
