Yesterday we noted comments that Buccaneers quarterback Jeff Garcia made suggesting that he’ll quit if he doesn’t get a contract offer to his liking.
But today Stephen Holder of the St. Petersburg Times has an important clarification — Garcia was talking about 2009.
According to Holder, Garcia was not saying he could be gone before this season when he said, “I feel like when you mistreat people there comes a time when it doesn’t matter how much money you’re going to be paid. If you’re not being treated the right way it’s going to lead to some drastic decisions and those decisions may just take me away from the game.”
So Garcia will play quarterback for the Buccaneers in 2008. But if he doesn’t have a new deal, he won’t do it happily.

Jeff, the best thing you brought to Tampa was your Playboy model wife Carmella. Retire and surrender your signing bonus from last season. I’m sure Carmella will love you even more as a 38 year old QB, basically broke, and not much to offer on the job prospect front. Hope you enjoyed your time here in Tampa. Move on now.

He’ll play in Tampa this year, just as Ocho Stinko will be in Cinci and Taylor will be in Miami.
When was the last time a play didn’t report and paid back money to the team?
I can’t remember a time ever.

This may be just about the only time u hear me side with a player in one of these situations, he only signed that **** contract b/c he thought he was mostly finished. If he knew (or anyone for that matter) that he’d be a probowl starter (and he was not lookin like a probowler or guaranteed starter when the season began last year) then many teams wouldve been trying to pay many more dollars to aquire his services.

Ah crap, this is EXACTLY what he pulled when he bailed from the Cleveland Browns.
At the time, he complained — on a national post-game interview no less — that the Browns weren’t treating him right & he just hoped another team would give him a chance.
He’s a talented athlete and all, but one can’t shake the impression he’s gotten work the last few years based on name recognition, and John Gruden’s sleep disorder where he wanders team headquarters and signs QBs at 3 in the morning.

This guy is like a million years old, and with his squirrel style running, he won’t have to retire because of his contract, but because he’ll be unable to play any more.
He’s not that good… all he did was lob the ball up for grabs to Galloway. If he quits then who cares… a 59 year old QB isn’t the answer.

Who knew Garcia was a Pro-Bowl starter???
Surely not me…
Didn’t he make it cuz Brett Favre didn’t want to go???
Well…Hasselbeck, Romo, and Favre all had more votes than Garcia did… so I don’t think that makes him a starter…..Especially since Favre had the most votes…. He was a RESERVE that got to play because no one else wanted to.
And his 13 TDs last year… boy was that one for the record books…He ALMOST had as many TDs as Sage Rosenfells!!!
And you gotta love that Hall of Fame year he had with 2,400 yards…
Man I change my mind about this….GIVE THAT MAN AN EXTENSION!!!

This whole thing is overblown. I heard the original interview on Sirius that got this whole thing started. Garcia never threatened to leave, went on and on about how he and Gruden got along well and the respect he had for him.
Did he mention he wanted a few more bucks? Yeah, what player doesn’t.
He compared it to rookie QB salaries. Unproven twerps that never completed a pass in the NFL.
Listen to the whole interview, in context, before hanging Garcia out there.

First, billsfanaddict, he was not a Pro Bowl started, he was an alternate. He played well, but the fact is he DID sign that contract because it was the best he could get at the time. The Bucs should not be penalized for giving an opportunity to an elderly, injury prone QB. The only problem i see from there end was keeping him out of the final game so he did not get his playing time bonus. I think they should have given him that, but as far as a contract goes, he probably should not be playing past 2008 anyway.
While I appreciate what he did for the Bucs last year, he has to have some perspective on the situation.

Let’s see, Garcia complained about being disrespected, mistreated and unappreciated in San Fran, Cleveland, Detroit and Philly. Why are we surprised that he is saying the same thing in Tampa??
