Two fights broke out during the Steelers’ organized team activities Wednesday, and coach Mike Tomlin said afterward that he thinks they were good for the team.
“Practice broke out into a fight,” Tomlin said afterward, per Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “You know, the competition is good, but the level of intensity has to be there if we want to get better.
“You have to understand professional etiquette; that’s what we talked about after practice. These kinds of things have to happen as we develop our football team because it gives us a venue to address them, and why we do what it is that we do and how we approach what it is that we do.
“You don’t like to see it happen, but it’s a necessary evil. I’m glad that it happened, we addressed it and move on.”
According to Bouchette, one of the skirmishes involved right tackle Willie Colon and linebacker Lawrence Timmons, while the other was between backup tackle Trai Essex and linebacker Arnold Harrison.
And yes, we’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: These are supposed to be non-contact practices.

Haha do you guys just throw in that last line to p1ss people off? That’s kind of the way you worded it, kind of saying ‘let’s see what kind of reaction we get’.
HOPEFULLY you know fights happen because of words as well. Or maybe one of them bumped into another one of them and the one said ‘this is supposed to be non-contact!’. So assuming you know that, it’s all good.

Makes you wonder how anyone could get so mad at a non-contact practice. Were they having a contest to see who could tell the best “yo mamma” joke like the hockey goalies in that commercial? Otherwise, I don’t see how anyone could get worked up enough in a non-contact practice for a fight to break out. To quote Allen Iverson “Practice, we’re talking about practice man.”

Ugh, I know. How dare the Steelers try to gain an unfair advantage over other teams by… fighting during.. practice…

“And yes, we’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: These are supposed to be non-contact practices.”
And you still sound ridiculous whining about it. Your point seems to be league-wide ignorance for teams using this time to have their players participate in drills that include contact. You have a point there; the league has been hypocritical in the enforcement of that rule. However, this is non sequitur. You can get grumpy at players for fighting their team mates any time it happens, but that has nothing to do with non-contact drills. Fights are NEVER an allowed part of the NFL. Contact drills, non-contact, 4th quarter of the Super Bowl, halftime in the locker room. Fighting is forbidden.

If you have ever had “non-contact” football practice you should understand why fights breakout. Even in just helmets your gonna have some incidental contact and mild blocking. Then someone goes too far and tempers flair. Stuff that normally doesn’t matter in full practice does in “non-contact”.

it’s SUPPOSED to be non-contact, but have you ever been a football coach?
Do you have ANY idea how hard it is to watch your team run drills and not think “i should make like Ron Mexico and pit these guys against each other to the death. TO THE THUNDER DOME!”
for those who think that players decide to start these fights on their own… don’t be so unrealistic. Professional athletes ONLY do what they’re told 90% of the time, all the time.

Come on people… do you have any idea how difficult it is for a coach to run non-contact drills when the potential to pit your players against each other in a death match always exists.
Some itches just can’t be ignored.
And to think that professional athletes decide to fight without being told to is just ridiculous. Professional athletes ONLY do what they’re told 90% of the time, all the time.

in non-contact drills? NON-CONTACT.
What are they doing to start fights, calling each other “Sissies”!

By grabbing someone’s facemask! That would piss me off. Anyway, if were already aware of the tradition in Pittsburgh. We touch on the subject back when Florion posted the article about Mendenhall’s tweaked hamstring. So, its a moot point. The Steelers have everyone in camp, no distruptions, no knuckleheads. Its just business at this point. I’m luvin it!
