The fractured relationship between the Jets and tight end Chris Baker does not appear close to mending, as Baker ripped the team when addressing the media today.
When asked if he expects to play for the Jets this year, Baker said, “If things stay the way they are, no, I don’t see how that’s possible. I don’t want that to be the case, but I don’t see how that’s possible … Imagine if coach [Eric] Mangini was the third highest-paid coach on the staff. You think he’d be happy about that? You think he would allow that to happen? I mean, that’s how I feel.”
Baker started 15 games last season and caught 41 passes for 409 yards. He said today that those numbers don’t show his true value, because he was asked to stay in and block last year and did so gladly. Baker has two years left on his current deal and is owed a base salary of $1.65 million this season.
Baker has said that General Manager Mike Tannenbaum agreed to a restructuring of his contract, only to recant later. Said Tannenbaum today, “I know what was said so I think Chris and I have a difference of opinion on those conversations.”
Baker also compared his present situation to what happened last year with guard Pete Kendall, who was traded to the Redskins after complaining about his contract. Said Baker of Kendall, “His situation was ridiculous and it basically tanked our season last year … Hopefully, I don’t get put in that situation, but it looks like we’re going down the same road.”

What is it about tight ends in the big city? They act like wide receivers.

What people neglect to mention in the Chris Baker/Jets case is that the Jets accelerated $1M of Baker’s base salary from this year onto his base salary from last year. Baker whining about how little he is paid is tantamount to a child complaining that the didn’t get any candy today because yesterday was Halloween. Also, if Baker was really so confident in himself, he shouldn’t have signed the 4 year deal he signed. He should have signed a shorter deal, with the hope of impressing and getting his pay day.

This is not the first time that a Jets player has effectively accused the team menagement of reneging on a committment to revisit their contract. I recall this has happened several times in the last couple of seasons.
Either all of the players involved are being economical with the truth, or the Jets management are (at best) misleading the players, and at worst being deceitful to them.
I think I know which one of those scenarios is more likely (HINT - It is not the players being economical with the truth…).
The ownership of the Jets has a problem with their management to address, before veteran players start to avoid the Jets in case they get led up the garden path on contract matters.

Chris Baker is honestly a complete joke. He is at best an average TE and makes average TE money. Has he not forgotten that he already tried free agency two yeard ago and absolutley nobody was interested until the Jets brought him back with a more than generous offer. Also nobody seems to mention that the front office actually gave him part of the money he was supposed to earn this year as a bonus last year which is why he’s being paid less than the other two TEs. I don’t think Baker realizes he has absolutley no leverage in this situation and it is nothing like the Kendall situation where the next best choice was equal to a revolving door.

The only difference between kendall and baker is that baker sucks and the jets have 2 other good players at his position and kendall is wicked and the cupboard was bare at guard.

41 passes for 409 yards… and he’s making $1.65 MILLION dollars next year… yet somehow he’s pissed? Um it’s not as-if he’s some badass Pro Bowl TE. How about you earned your paycheck last year… nothing more. So shut up and go play the game I’d have given anything to play.

I never support the Jets. (Im a Pats fan). But would anyone sign Chris Baker to a bigger deal than 1.65M per year in Free Agency?
Is this guy that good of a TE? I know he is decent but he isnt worth a huge contract. Shouldnt he shut his mouth and play this year out at 1.65?

kendall was the key to the o-line playing between 2 rookies.
baker is……?
i personally believe baker has heard from another team that they will pay him and he is trying to get out
he has done nothing here in NY.
jets signed him after no team showed interest in him and even gave him an advance last year on this year’s salary.
jets cannot trade him or pay him because every player will ask for raises or ask to be traded to get a raise. there is no way you can build a championship team like that.

MangIdiot set a precedent by letting players blackmail him into trading them or getting contract extensions, and it will never end until the Jets get a new head coach.
Unfortunately Woody Johnson (*giggle*) is in a no win situation. Once he fires MangIdiot he can pretty much be assured that he’s going to rat out the Jets about every instance of tampering or other rule breaking…. but with Goodell’s crackdown on petty rules, the Jets can say goodbye to at least a handful of draft picks when MangIdiot sings.
So its a choice of living with a weak coach who is letting the inmates run the asylum, or firing MangIdiot and losing draft picks when he reveals all the Jests dirt.

You are showing your bias. What would Belichick do with this guy?
Im a Pats fan and Ive enjoyed your posts. Dont blow your cred on anti Mangini posts on a disgruntled average TE.

JoeSixPack really sticking to his guns with the MangIdiot wordplay. It’s not at all funny, but using it 4 times in 6 lines really hammers it home and has everyone’s guts busting.
It’s Chris Baker. He’s totally expendable. But he’ll play for the Jets this season because NOBODY ELSE WANTS HIM. That’s how you’re supposed to run a team - or any business. Shut up and play. Then you’ll get paid. Just ask Kerry Rhodes - if you don’t suck, you get a raise. So which inmate is exactly running the asylum? The one with absolutely no leverage and no other suitors? I can live with that.
Or maybe if JoeSixPack was running the show, every player that asked for more money would get an instantaneous massive raise. Evidently that’s what a “strong coach” does.

LOL @ Chris freakin’ Baker….
Classic example of an agent brain washing a player - So, far none of these guys had a case and relatively speaking, in a league where just about every team has a contract issue each offseason, the Jets issues have been tame - Sure, try to pin last year on the loss of Kendall, I don’t think they win the SB though….
Coles woke up and realized the Jets offer was a great deal - Players sometimes think YEARS mean soemthing and they want to “finish their career” somewhere - Once basic NFL math was taught to Coles, he realized the deal they offered to GUARANTEE is money was better than anything he could hope for - NON ISSUE.
Kendall was off hbis rocker - Justy got a new deal after testing the market - STOLE the signing bonus that players and agents and Florio forget about and then blackmailed the Jets with a loophole where Kendall was a complete TURD ; NONISSUE…
Now Baker is the most ridiculous case - This agent thinks he can take advantage of the other cases before him….. Also took Bonus money and isn’t even a good player… Kendall can eat Crow…..
Jets should just cut him now and get it over with… But, it’s tough cuz you want to draw the line somewhere with these coniving agents…
ALL I care about is the STARS on the team getting their due and getting treated fairly - If this were Kerry Rhodes it would deserve the press it gets…. But, Baker - Come one guy.
Also love the Pats fans getting all excited…. Oh Brother…

I’m inclined to agree that he doesn’t DESERVE more money and should shut his hole. However, after Kendall, and Coles both accused them of exactly the same thing, how can you not start to look at the front office? I’m not saying he SHOULD get paid but thats not for us to decide. The problem here is that Baker claims the FO TOLD him he’d get paid… and then didn’t follow through. Thats the problem.

My question is where the PROBLEM comes in. Kendall was a problem last year, admittedly, because they didn’t have a plan B. But now they upgraded to an all-pro, Coles is happy, and Baker has no leverage and might not even have a role on this team.
So of these 3 options:
a) Overpay for a mediocre TE to shut him up
b) Listen to him whine for a month, then forget about it
c) Cut him and lose out on the services of a mediocre but functional player with a reasonable contract.
I choose b! So do the Jets. Can’t argue there.

Kendall LIED…. He already got his new deal and walked away with FIVE MILLION DOLLARS from the Jets…
So, lets not pretend there a pattern…
Even Coles was mistaken and finally agreed to the real good deal the Jets offerend all along - Coles misunderstood YEARS VS Guarantees in the NFL… The Jets were willing to GUARANTEE his $$$ all along - Making that a 12 year deal doesn’t guarantee anything….
The only patter here is Agent brainwashing and media types latching on to it not grasping the bonus part and reality.
