Though some consider the stunning AFC divisional playoff win by the Chargers over the Colts as a sign that San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers has come of age and is ready to lead the team to new heights in 2008, our concern has been that Rivers’ ACL injury and rehab will cause him to miss most if not all of the offseason program, holding back his preparations for the coming season.
Given that most teams install 75 percent or more of their offense and defense during the offseason, the missed time has significant meaning.
But even though Rivers initially was regarded as a longshot to be ready to go when training camp opens, Rivers is already back on the field, as Adam Schefter points out in his Wednesday “Around the League” segment for NFLN’s Total Access. He took ten snaps with the starting offense during the last practice before Memorial Day, and he led the offense throughout 11-on-11 drills on Monday of this week.
“I was prepared to have him really not do anything except throw routes against air,” coach Norv Turner recently said. “He’s just making great progress.”

Making fun with people’s names is not really funny or clever, you know.
Some people could rightfully take an offense to that. Just sayin’

The only potential witticism here involving someones name was the title of this article. And in no way was that “making fun with [River’s] name”. If anything, Florio is pointing out the progress reportedly made by Rivers. I don’t know if Mr. Touchdown was being sarcastic, but it’s ironic, seeing as he made up his own “funny [and] clever” name…

It never ceases to amaze when people blisfully ignore the other side of stories like these. Adam Schefter’s report said Rivers was expected to miss 8 months, but is back working out with the team after 4 months.
To what holy body do we credit the miracle of Rivers recovering from a serious knee injury in half the expected time? Saint HGH of Roid?

Rivers is just that talented. Cowher wanted Rivers bad, but (supposedly) had to settle for Roethlisberger. That worked out pretty well!
And imagine the pressure on Rivers. QB of a team with “future HOF” runner LT who wants a ring, and the other 2 quarterbacks drafted with him in the first round already have championships. Has that EVER happened before?
Philip Rivers is going to be one of the guys to watch this year. I’m thinking even if he falls apart we shouldn’t hold it against him. At least until 2010.

Darth Ringo, how do you think JP Losman feels?
But seriously, looking at the QBs taken in the ‘04 draft, either they won a SB (Manning, Roethlisberger) or they’ve disappeared (bar Shaub and Rivers); it really is UNBELIEVABLE.

hgh lol
must be a pats fan
anyway…rivers is a football player in every sense of the phrase, he’s always been a winner, and football has been his life since he was disecting gamefilm with his dad who was a head coach…it’s just who he is.
if anyone is going to recover quicker than normal, it’s a guy like rivers who doesn’t put himself in bad situations, is a total family man, and just has discipline in these matters.
Is he a smack talker on the field? yes, it’s because he’s a linebacker playing qb…and he’ll just keep winning because it’s what he’s always done….unlike some nfl qbs…

I never liked Rivers. Whines too much. Jaws too much. But what he did in the AFC game against the Pats was gutsy. He hobbled around and would not come out of that game even with that knee. To me, that justifies his fiery personality and all that jawing. I guess I’m saying I’m coming around on Rivers because apparently his walk matches his talk.
The Chargers still won’t beat the Pats in the playoffs this year.

I agree with LuvThat… Rivers stepped up and played hurt while “Mr. Wonderful, Star Running Back” was sitting on the bench crying to anybody who would listen about his booboo on his knee. Rivers gained some respect up here in Seattle… LT lost alot.

Maybe its just me, but I didn’t care for all the trash talk from Rivers. I’m more than happy the Giants traded for Eli. He’s humble, and lets the play on the field do the talking.

What exactly has he won? He’s the biggest cry-baby I’ve ever seen when it comes to NFL QB’s. He’s a brat and eventually his own team will turn on him.

“Eventually his own team will turn on him”
Do you know anything about Rivers or the Chargers, Casanova?
Obviously not.
At media-only minicamp in 2006 before PR had started his first game for the Chargers, I had the opportunity to speak with Chargers Hall of Fame member Paul Lowe (from the old AFL) who is a regular at Chargers events.
Asking him about the QB situation and the change, he noted that PR was “one of the guys” and that his teammates liked him a great deal. Mr. Lowe stated that “the other guy” (now in New Orleans) was “a bit of a prima donna”.
PR is a winner, a natural leader and his teammates absolutely love him. No matter how much you wish and dream that it is different, there is no way in hell any Charger player “turns” on PR. He is the leader of the franchise and teammates will run through walls for him, most specifically the o-linemen.
Strap it on for 2008: Rivers is heading into year 2 as a starter in a Norv Turner offense - the year that QBs generally take off now after grasping the scheme.

I, too, thought he was a cry-baby until he put it all on the line during that AFC Championship game. Not a Chargers fan, but hopefully, for his sake, some of that will carry over for him.
Early prediction here, LT will not be the same after his injury. See Shawn Alexander.

Casanova, the internet allows ignorant people the ability to hide behind stoopid comments. Just review Rivers’ college and professional W-L record as the starting QB if you’re looking to understand what he’s done. You might also want to check out his MVP record in every bowl game he played in college. As an continuation of that record, while leading the Chargers as the starting QB, his team has yet to fail to win the AFC West.
Any “smack-talking” that he does is always done without profanity or malice; he’s just a competitive guy who leads his team while always staying out of trouble off the field. What other QB’s have had a better W-L record during their first two years as a starter? Can you name a tougher QB?
Look for him to lead the Chargers to the big show this year.
He’s a winner, and a gentleman.

how exactly does rivers suck? his stats are far from suck, all he does is win games wherever he’s been
has he won a superbowl yet? no, did marino? no, did fouts? no
and those guys never had an LT to take most of the glory
if anyone here thinks rivers sucks, they’ve obviously never paid attention to his career both in college and the nfl.
their just all broken up about a qb who talks smack on the field, yet they like to forget favre’s done the same thing …it is humorous

JoeMcRugby -
Thanks for that information. I think the media has portrayed Rivers in a negative light, and led to quite a bit of this misinformation. The Cutler incident, with Cutler being the actual instigator, is a big part of the problem. ESPN choose to only show Cutler from the back, but he was mouthing off to Rivers and the Chargers bench - IN FRONT OF THE CHARGERS BENCH - while getting blown out in the fourth quarter. Yet, since Jaworski had spent the whole game licking Cutler’s nuts and tea bagging him, we got the spin that Rivers was the problem child.

I do believe that Rivers is gutsy, a hard worker, a stand-up guy, all of those wonderful things that are being said about him. However, he tore his freaking ACL in the playoffs! He is rushing himself back too soon just as McNabb did last year and Carson Palmer did the year before, when both stunk for the first half of the season. Chargers fans, don’t count on him being the same QB he was last year at the beginning of this year or you are going to be severely disappointed. He will be servicable, not great.

If Roger Goodell would have even done a far below average job mitigating this mess, the NFL wouldn’t be in this position. For those hamemring away at Specter, he wasn’t really even given a choice… Goodell MADE him continue by acting the fool. If you want to be pissed, be pissed at possibly the worst CEO a major franchise has ever hired!!!!

pdyerisu,
There is a big difference between the injury PR suffered and the injuries suffered by both Palmer and McNabb.
Palmer tore multiple ligaments and meniscus while also suffering a dislocated kneecap. McNabb’s injury was
PR’s injury was isolated to the torn ACL with no auxilliary damage to the knee joint. They’re taking care that he doesn’t take any hits until well into the exhibition games.
With modern knee surgery technology and rehab devices & training techniques, PR’s recovery timeframe from the torn ACL isn’t all that unusual.
