In a story that hardly fits within the same-old DUI/marijuana possession/domestic assault formula for NFL player arrests, Patriots offensive lineman Nick Kaczur reportedly was arrested on April 27 for illegal possession of prescription painkillers.
Kaczur then participated in an effort to bust the person from whom he got them.
Specifically, Kaczur wore a wire during three separate drug transactions in May. Each time, Kaczur paid $3900 for 100 OxyContin tablets.
The Boston Globe reports that Kaczur denies any involvement in the investigation, or that he was buying drugs.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about, bro,” Kaczur said. “I don’t know where this is coming from. I don’t know what you are talking about.”
But the Globe cites multiple unnamed sources in support of the report, and given the experiences of the Boston Herald in connection with Spygate II, we have a feeling that the Globe made damn sure they had this one nailed before printing it.
Per the story, Kaczur had been buying OxyContin pills 100 at a time every few days since November 2007.
The lawyer for the alleged supplier, Daniel Ekasala, claims that his client was merely caught up in a desire to help out a member of the Patriots.
“My client was always sympathetic to Mr. Kaczur and suggested to him many times, as the text messages will show, that Kaczur ought not to be doing what he was doing,” Bernard Grossberg said. “Professional athletes in this country are treated like royalty, and royalty sometimes abuses the people they come in contact with, and I think that’s what happened to Ekasala.”
Despite Kaczur’s denials, we believe that the Globe is right on this one, and as a result we’ll apply the rules of Turd Watch and re-set the “Days without an Arrest” counter to zero, based on the fact that Kaczur’s arrest was kept under wraps for more than a week.

Wow! What an offseason for the Patriots. Spygate; some no-name gets busted for drugs; Faulk gets in trouble for drugs; we find out that players on IR participate in practice; and now Kaczur’s drug problem comes out. Is anyone else reminded of John Mellencamp singing about the walls crumbling down?

I expect the stiffest fine possible from Goodell. Too bad he didn’t attempt to kill someone with his car and then commit a felony by obstructing justice, because then he’d probably get off easy.

Was it kept under wraps for the purpose of getting the other guy? I’m not that familiar with law enforcement, but it would seem to make sense that they’d want that information out kept secret.

I’m sure it was kept quiet so that Kaczur could (1) act as an informant, and (2) to protect him after he acted as an informant. It’s important that newpapers get out newsworthy information, but sometimes they need to balance that need with the safety of the parties on whom they are reporting. Now that Kaczur is out there in the public as a snitch, one really needs to wonder if the Globe was successful in the balancing act or not. They could have written of the arrest and whether it was reported to the requisite NFL and team officials without going into detail if they truly felt the need to publish the story.

What a snitch! Only a Patriot would be this big of a low-life! I got caught with drugs! Oh No! Now I’m going to work for the DEA to save my own ass. Pacman and Chris Henry are much better people than this idiot. Snitching is the lowest of the low. Goodell suspend this snitch indefinitely! Oh ya, he’s white! No Suspension!

yea, you’re right Mike. The arrest should have been made public right away. Though that probably would not have helped much in the busting of the dealer, ya think?

The only thing worse than a cheat is someone who tells on his friends or accomplices . He committed the act but passed the buck . I guess it should not suprise anyone .

Hey Pats fans …
I’m just curious, many of you get on your moral high-horse when it came to the topic of “informing” last fall … how do you feel today now that one of your players was flipped by the DEA?
Justified as usual, I’m sure …

Don’t miss the boat Florio!!!! Your next headline needs to be… Spygate III, filthy CHEATER Belichick’s CHEATING drives players to drugs!!!! This is far worse than videotaping signals, although I don’t think it quite measures up practicing IR players (but then again, nothing’s worse than THAT!!!!). Seriously, it’s been a good 6 days since you’ve typed the words Spygate… even Peter King got the words “Spygate” into his Monday column for no real reason at all. You’re slippin’……

I have some questions about the arrest and decision to flip.
-Why did going 11 over the speed limit lead to a search? (Also, talk about a speed trap.)
-Why did Kaczur flip when he was threatened with a misdeamor? How did the case go from the NY State Police to the DEA? Why did the DEA pick up a case to bust a dealer for 300 pills? Did Kaczur misrepresent his purchases in order to entice the DEA to pick up the case?

Another black eye for the evil empire… or just a slow news day… Can’t decide. Oh wait, I can. This guy didn’t get busted for steroids, he got busted for pain killers. I’d like to see any of you goons play 16 games a season without pain killers. This isn’t a morality issue, i’m actually suprised this doesn’t happen more often.

Funny how the same people who defended Mangini for snitching on Belichick are now trashing Kazcur. I guess if you snitch on your former mentor, it is ok.
What Kazcur did was wrong and if proven true should be punished by the league appropriately. I ain’t going to defend him.

You don’t buy hundreds of pills every week for personal use, especially if these pills, in fact, were oxycontin. Ten will get you twenty that some of these pills went to other people, possibly to some of his teammates. I really hope this one proceeds to trial and it looks as though it will given Ekasala’s refusal to cooperate.
