While we’re in the process of tossing out unsubstantiated hypotheses (or, as the case may be, hypothesises), here’s one that we’ve cooked up without the benefit of a league insider whispering into our ear.
We think that it wasn’t a coincidence that the limited reinstatement of Pacman Jones was announced only a couple of hours before word broke of a new contract for receiver Terrell Owens.
Specifically, we think that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is trying to encourage Owens to take Pacman under his wing, since T.O. might be one of the few people on the planet capable of exerting a positive influence over Pacman.
Forgotten in the aftermath of the Cowboys-Titans game in 2006, during which Tennessee defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth dropped a cleat on the forehead of Dallas center Andre Gurode, is that Pacman asked T.O. for his cleats after the game ended.
And so perhaps T.O. and Pacman will ultimately form a Batman and Robin type of a bond, with Owens providing the male role model that Pacman simply hasn’t had — ever — in his life.
Then again, maybe Owens will go back to being the pre-Dallas T.O., now that he’s bagged $13 million in guaranteed money as part of the four-year, $34 million deal. One astute reader thinks that Owens’ recent criticisms of former Cowboys coach Bill Parcells is the first step in a process that will result in Owens eventually criticizing current members of the organization, including at some point his (sniff) quarterback.
As the reader explained, giving Owens financial security is the equivalent of pulling the string on a talking doll.
The reader might be right. Either way, our popcorn is ready.

You have too much free time thinking all of this stuff. Dont try to link Pacman to everything. You want to link Pacman to high gas prices?

Looks to me like you guys have some kind of obssesion with Jerry and the ‘Boys working here. You admit you just made this up out of thin air and post after post deals with Dallas, TO, Pacman, etc.
Starting to look like a celebrity stalking in the making.

Wow… that sentence made my head explode. If you really wanted a “role model” for Pacman, why of all people would you pick T.O.? I know he really hasnt been the trouble maker in Dallas that we all expected he would be, but regardless this just seems like a match made in hell. There has to be someone better on that team to “take Pacman under his wing”. The first name that comes to mind would be Zach Thomas.

well tell your “astute reader” that TO ran his mouth about Parcells last year too, before he had the financial security he has now

Yup, every thing (sniff) (because, you know, that’s not old or anything *eye roll*) Owens does now is going to be the first step for him to go back to who he was, right? Oops, Owens was 5 minutes late to practice because of traffic, he’s going to start saying Wade can’t coach and Romo can’t play! Geez, apparently this guy can’t do anything right. He criticizes McNabb, he gets criticized, he defends Romo after a tough playoff loss, sheds a few tears, and he gets criticized.

TO has proven himself over the last two years that he’s transformed from a me-first guy to a team player worried about his legacy, so we won’t hear any more major trouble from him. As far as taking Pacman under his wings, he already has Neon Deon and Michael Irving helping lead him towards the promise land, and it’s probably better (from the team’s perspective) for ex-players outside the organization leading him straight rather than having to worry about dragging a team member down with him.
So is the next link PACMAN LINK TO 17TH GAME?

The “reader” is out of his mind. TO’s Philly issue began because he had no security with the contract he was playing under. In fact, the Eagles refusal to guarantee a big roster bonus that was to come due in March of ‘06 has to be taken as a clear message that they didn’t intend to pay it. I guess we’ll do a third year of “The TO Explosion Watch” here on PFT where we’ll be treated to many many predictions, suppositions and ruminations every time TO cuts the cheese. Even if TO’s insincere when he says how great it is to be a Dallas Cowboy, he’s still got plenty of reasons to keep it under his hat. Sure, TO got a hefty $13 million bonus… but that still leaves him 21 million more reasons to put on a happy face. Is TO gonna get more money somewhere else if he blows up AGAIN?!? THINK, PEOPLE! Frankly I think some of these guys like the reader you cite must have dipped the paint chips into antifreeze before they ate them when they were kids.

Ever since T. O. signed with the Cowboys, a lot of people predicted doom & gloom, especially ESPN. But not only has T.O. proven to be a good teammate as well as a player (28 T.D.s/2 yrs.), he has emerged as a Leader on this team. When are you guys going to get off his back and admit that you don’t know everything. It’s ok to say you were mistaken.

The “astute” reader has it backwards. TO is obnoxious when he’s unhappy with his contract and/or situation. He knows that’s the only way to get out of town with the effed up contracts & CBA that the player/slaves operate under. Politely asking for a pay raise or transfer gets him or anyone else exactly nowhere. Remember when he first tried playing nice in Phili when he had a crap contract and asked for a new one? The idiot owner & front office decided that making the best player on the team happy was less important than their ego’s. Predictably that team has been circling the toilet bowl ever since. Dallas is treating him well so they, in turn, will get good behavior.
