Last week we noted that wide receiver Roy Williams was one of five Lions who didn’t show up to voluntary organized team activities.
Williams’ absence was widely interpreted as the latest sign that he and the team’s top brass are not seeing eye to eye, but Williams said today that that’s not the case.
“I’m going to make a lot of money this year,” Williams. “You all can look it up. They owe me $5.8 million this year. So why would I be mad? I’m not mad. I’m not missing OTAs because I’m mad at the Detroit Lions. I’m missing because my flights got canceled. . . . I tried to get here two days in a row, and I just wasn’t coming for one day. I called the coaches. They knew where I was at. So it wasn’t a big deal.”
When it was pointed out to Williams that he could have caught a flight that would have gotten him to Monday’s OTAs, he said, “That was my fault. I booked it wrong. I booked it on the second instead of the first.”
OTAs are voluntary, which means Williams isn’t obligated to justify missing them. But it’s a little hard to believe that his contract status had nothing at all to do with his absences. Williams might not be mad, but it’s been well documented that he’s not crazy about the situation in Detroit, where he’s unlikely to get the long-term contract extension he wants. A happy player might have worked a little harder at finding an available flight.

Actually, the June 1st flight was booked to Philadelphia International airport. Guess everyone was in error there.

man. get off the players backs. jesus. it’s VOLUNTARY. Derrick Burgess has NEVER attended OTA or voluntary mini-camps in oakland. it doesn’t matter. guys like roy williams have proved themselves enough not to show up. This isn’t news. and you guys are too critical of players personal lives.

Where is he flying from, the 1940’s? I’d love a show of hands from PFT Planet on who has ever missed a flight, but has been able to book another one that lands a few hours later. I know I have.

Son of a Submariner is right. Heck one time I showed up at the airport on the wrong day, a day early, and was still able to fly out. Hard to believe he tried for two days and couldn’t get a flight!!
Still it doesn’t matter, it is voluntary and him being there isn’t that big of a deal.

Jesus, Florio! Why is every thing so cloak and dagger? This is a non-issue. He just said it was his fault. What is missing a couple days of an OTA, only to show up any way, going to prove? How does that say, “I WANT A LONG TERM CONTRACT NOW!” or “PAY ME MORE MONEY!”
This guy has been nothing but a consumate professional. He is the anti-thesis of the typical, prima-donna NFL Wide Reciever. Lets give the guy the benefit of the doubt. He may have a desire to leave Detroit, but I don’t think that is going to get in the way of a productive season, since he is in a contract year. Detroit just may very well give him his big contract.

I don’t understand why he would WANT an extention. Get the hell out of Detriot while you have a chance. Have a big year and you are next years top WR FA. Moss and T.O. money are in your future.

@ Son of a Submariner
I guess you could also argue that a man with Williams’ fame and money could just buy a plane too or maybe afford a helicopter ride, boat and/or a bus ticket.
What does it matter anyway? Team FO’s play b.s. games with players, and players just return the favor when they need to leverage back. Thats the field they’ve been dealt to play on by management, so to expect them to jump through all your hoops on every command is a little bit unreasonable when you won’t properly take care of your best players on principle alone, ie: without them having to ask (beg) for it. Roy Williams would be welcomed on any team in the league. Class guy, all business. Including this statement.
What part of “voluntary” do people not understand? You guys are such corporate ball washers, i swear. Turn in your man cards.

Considering that Williams doesnt tip for service…his excuse is probably legit.
I mean the $49 southwest fun fares might only fly out once a day!

I don’t see the point of ridiculing him over this. He admitted that he made a mistake at one point(something you don’t often see players do, especially receivers) and said he told his coaches about it. That’s a hell of a lot better than most’ll do, and besides, like someone stated previously, he’s proven himself, if he doesn’t want to show up for OTA’s, he doesn’t have to. I agree with most things PFT says, but I don’t like how they are portraying him here.

@slizz
As a former server in the Cincy area, I can tell you that most of the NFL players don’t tip. Its really not a surprise as it is more of a cultural thing then an NFL thing. And you can read between the lines on that one.

What don’t they tip for? Soy-Mocha-Latte-No foam? I don’t tip for that either. Servers, I tip 20%. They should tip 40%.
