When the Eagles used their first pick in the 2007 draft on Kevin Kolb, they envisioned him as their starter of the future. Kolb isn’t starting yet, but he is moving up the depth chart.

Eagles coach Andy Reid confirmed that Kolb has moved ahead of last year’s No. 2, A.J. Feeley, and is now the top backup behind starter Donovan McNabb.

“I’ve seen improvement [in Kolb] and right now he has a seasoned veteran ahead of him and behind him,” Reid said. “He has a lot of knowledge there to draw from and learn from. He’s competing right now. That number two spot allows him to get a few more reps than what A.J. might get in the third spot.”

For Feeley’s part, he says he’s not disappointed.

“Even if I was the No. 3, look at how many threes came in this season,” Feeley said. “The Vikings used their No. 3, three different times. So you have to be ready for that and prepare as if you’re going to be playing.”

Realistically, this only matters if McNabb gets hurt. But since McNabb has missed 15 games in the last three years, Reid needs to know who his second-best quarterback is, and moving Kolb to No. 2 on the depth chart gives Reid a better opportunity to make that determination.
