MDS noted in a Wednesday Morning One-Liner that a Tampa radio host is bashing the Buccaneers for re-signing tight end Jerramy Stevens.  (From the “Cool as the Other Side of the Pillow” file, we’re compelled to insert at this time our periodic observation that Stevens’ first name has two “R”s because he might drop one of them.)

When I saw the entry, I immediately knew that the radio host was my old (in Internet terms) pal Steve “The Big Dog” Duemig of WDAE in Tampa.

I’ve said I will not let this die,” Duemig said Tuesday.  “I think it’s disgusting that he’s a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  We talked about Stevens for four hours Monday, and there wasn’t one dissenting opinion.”

The move required the Big Dog to display some big, um, nerve in making his feelings known, since WDAE does big business with the Buccaneers.

“Our phones haven’t stopped ringing since the Bucs announced Stevens is back,” WDAE program direct Mike Killabrew told the Tampa Tribune.  “I know we are the flagship station for the Bucs, but this community is in an uproar.”

Look for Duemig to continue his crusade.

“I’m protesting this move, and I’d like to see Jerramy Stevens dismissed from this football team,” he said.  “This might be the most passionate issue I’ve ever attacked in 17 years on the radio in this town.  This even overtakes former Bucs quarterback Trent Dilfer.”

The only positive aspect of the situation (if there is one) is that the Bucs didn’t apply the same double standard that teams like, for example, the Steelers have used.  In Pittsburgh, when a scrub does the same thing off the field as a star, the star keeps his job and the scrub gets fired.

In Tampa, they’re willing to look the other way for all of the players — even those who aren’t very good, like Stevens.
