Receiver Peter Warrick’s tenure in the CFL was short-lived.
Warrick, who signed with the Montreal Alouettes last week, got his walking papers on Tuesday.
The move puts an exclamation point on the pro career of a guy who was believed to be a can’t-miss prospect in the 2000 draft. Warrick was the fourth overall pick of the Bengals, underachieved in Cincinnati for five years, and joined the Seahawks in 2005.
He signed with the Las Vegas Gladiators of the Arena League in 2007, but never played for the team.

To be fair to Warrick, the one season he was healthy and had good QB play to help him out (2003) he was actually good. Not, all-pro, off-the-charts good, certainly, but solid NFL starting WR good.

I never thought of him as a “can’t miss” prospect. I still regretted the day the Bengals drafted him - one in a long line of misses by the Bengals in those days. He was plenty fast enough to run circles around ACC defenders, but a lot of times those college guys who get by on pure speed can’t rely solely on it at the NFL level - just ask Reggie Bush.

Peter Warrik, one of my favorite players ever. Does anybody ever remember the game between the Bengals and Chiefs in the early 200’s?
Chiefs were on the way to an undefeated season, and Dante Hall
was the X factor. Peter tore that game up with a long tD grab, and a
game winning kick return for a TD. After the game in the locker room
he said “everybody talking about dante hall, but today it was PDUB”
We’ll miss ya peter

Son of Submariner: The problem with Warrick was LACK of speed. He had great moves in college, not speed.
You can get by on reversing field and juking every other play against NC State and Clemson…you can’t do it in the NFL. I pretty much knew Warrick would be a bust when:
1. He from from the can’t-miss #1 pick in the draft due to his being clocked at 4.6 in the 40, and
2. Cincinnati drafted him anyway.
His game at FSU was all flash, but the things that mattered–his speed and his hands–were mediocre at best.

If you read the article, it says he “helped” Seattle reach the Super Bowl in 2005. He “helped” Seattle about as much as I did.

I dont understand why people seem to think Warrick was a troubled player off the field. He had the one incident in college which really wasnt a big deal. Basically, an employee at a department store that he was friends with helped him and L. Coles shoplift some clothes. A dumb mistake made by a 20 year old kid. He was always a class act as a pro, and you have to respect the fact that he loves football enough that he is still chasing it today.
He did have a very good season in 2003 with the Bengals, and it looked like he was finally going to live up to his draft position, but he suffered a knee injury that he would never fully recover from.

Complete bust! If you can’t make it in the AFL or the CFL after bing the 4th overall pick then you suck! However, Number 16 in San Diego will always be the top bust of all time. It would take someone extraordinary to top him.

Somewhere Laverneus Coles is laughing at this story. Remember he was the one thrown out of school, for that shoplifting incident. Even though Warrick had just as much culpability, if not more in what took place. But it was Coles who was left out in the dark and forced to leave school, clearly due to the fact that Warrick was the more valuable player to Florida State. Not that Coles is a Hall of Fame reciever, but he has certainly carved a respectable career for himself in the NFL.
