The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are still trying to get money from Jake Plummer.
PewterReport.com is reporting that a grievance hearing will be held this month at which it will be determined whether Plummer has to pay back up to $7 million in bonus money he received from the Denver Broncos. When the Buccaneers acquired Plummer in a trade from the Broncos in 2007, they maintain that they also acquired the right to go after that bonus money, and they haven’t given up on that right, even if they have given up on actually having Plummer play for them.
According to Pewter Report, the Buccaneers and Broncos have filed three joint grievances against Plummer in the last year.
Plummer was the Broncos’ starting quarterback until December of 2006, when he was benched for Jay Cutler. The Broncos announced early in the 2007 off-season that they had traded Plummer to the Buccaneers, and he announced his retirement shortly after that.

How would the Buc’s be entitled to $7mil that the Broncos paid someone?

Didn’t Plummer say he would retire before he was traded? If so the Buc’s knew the situation they were getting into. Regardless, Plummer should just show up and pull a T.O. and make the Buc’s happy he isn’t there.

For the same reason that the Buc’s would have been required to pay Plummer the contracturally agreed to salary if he agreed to play with the Bucs.
When he was traded, the whole contract was traded with him (all rights etc).
So when Plummer decided not to fulfill the terms of this contract, the Bucs were able to request reimbursement for the bonus (that was previously paid out, but is earned over the length of the deal)

The 7 million would probably be split between the Broncos and the Bucs. The fact that they are filing joint grievances would indicate that they already know how they would split it up. The bucs would be entitled to their share because they gave up a draft pic. 6th or 7th round I think, not a bad deal if they get a few million out of the deal. That being said Gruden would have rather had the QB given how weak they were at the position 2 years ago when the deal was done.

SWEET!!!!!! I’m SO happy that Plummer will get bit in the arse for trying to stick it to the Broncos. I hate that stupid neckbearded SOB more than life itself.
Not only did Jerk Dumber retire just so the Broncos would get a lower conditional draft pick as compensation, he knew he couldn’t even beat out Jeff Garcia for the job.
Hopefully his losing ways will continue with his handball career. Either way, here’s to ya’ Jake. May you end up broke and homeless for the rest of your days….. he’s already got the homeless guy look going anyways. Might as well make it official.
JerkBeard Hater OUT!

The Bucs are probably looking at it from this perspective…
The player they traded for was signed for a contract length spannign a number of years. The contract length was largely due to bonus money that was paid to him at that time, and breaching that contract means that he could lose that money, which made the contracted player a safe guy to trade for.
That resulted in the Bucs trading away more to get him than they would have if he had only a few months left on his contract.
He defaulted on the new contract that he had sign, which the Bucs owned. Since they have the rights to his contract (the contract that he was paid 7 million dollars up-front to sign) I think they have a legit claim to go after the bonus money that was paid to him since he breached the contract.

Yeah, I don’t get this mess either. I can see the Broncos having a legit case, but not the Bucs.
If the Bucs prevail on this, it will be interesting to see if this is another loop hole that gets disected during collective bargaining

I don’t care who has a legit legal excuse for anything. Plummer made millions and he sucked. All this defending players who are making big bucks for any and everything makes me cringe. I’m tired of players griping about shiat when they haven’t produced in years. I am not rooting for ANY biatching by ANY player when their salaries are absurd. And don’t say, “OK, he was good for one season, blah, blah, blah.” Earn your money on the field you A**holes.

It doesn’t make any sense what so ever… but some arbitrator said Ricky Williams owed the Dolphins money, even though his “signing bonus” came from the Saints.
