Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner has been declared the backup in Arizona, but he’s hoping to negotiate a contract extension worthy of a guy who at least has a chance of being a starter.
“I want to be in a situation where I’m comfortable. I kind of want to know my future,” Warner said. “A lot of it will be dictated by what kind of plans they have for me here. I think the contract is going to allow me to see what they’re thinking for me moving forward.”
Cardinals General Manager Rod Graves said he hopes to have an extension done by the start of training camp.
Warner is entering the final year of his deal, and ordinarily, backups don’t have much leverage in contract negotiations. But when the backup is coming off a season in which he out-played the starter, that changes things.
If the Cardinals give Warner a new deal with a hefty salary, that won’t only be a sign that they have confidence in Warner. It will also be a sign that they lack confidence in Matt Leinart.

Kurt, stay in Arizona. Leinhart will flame out by week 5. He is a bust. I don’t see any natural instincts in Leinhart.

It’ll be nice to see Kurt Warner play into his 60’s with a 5-year extension.
Kidding aside, it’s going to be tough for Arizona to not retain him given the recent lack of talent at QB around the league. Granted he’s not what he once was, he’s still got the mechanics of a very solid player. If they can’t keep him, I’d have to imagine that he’ll find suitors elsewhere.

What would a contract extension look like that would make Leinart worried?

This is a guy who was bagging groceries before emerging as a league MVP and now he says, “I kind of want to know my future.” It’s funny how his perspective changed once he moved out of the $25K a year salary range. Count your blessings Kurt. You are set for life and still in a position to be the starting QB. Leinart hasn’t proven a thing yet.

This story headline is wrong…
The Cardinals WANT to give Warner an extension. The club has been leading this contract extension, not the other way around (as this story suggests). The Cards are trying to get a deal in place that pays him in accordance if he’s the #1 or #2 guy. Either way he’ll be paid well.
Coach Whis has stated that Leinart is the #1 now, but the best guy will be the starter. Leinart has a chain that is short, if he succeeds they’ll leave him in, if he struggles and makes dumb decisions he’ll be pulled. Look for more of the 2 qb system that worked well for the team last year.
Go Cardinals!!!

Kotite,
Thats kinda the point about Warner, he didn’t have it easy and he knows more about real-life than guys like Leinart and other “bonus-babies”. He knows that it can all disappear quick, so yeah he wants to not only know his professional future (where he will be playing), but he wants to keep that money coming in.
