Inside the NFL, the long-running pro football highlights show that was dumped by HBO after three decades earlier this year, has landed with one of HBO’s oldest pay-channel competitors, Showtime.
The show will be produced by CBS Sports and NFL Films, and it will air on Wednesday nights during football season.
“This is the granddaddy of all highlight shows,” said Steve Sabol, President of NFL Films. “The combination of our film and game sound with the analysis in the studio gives Inside the NFL a perfect balance of action and insight. That’s why it’s been so popular for so long.”
It’s unknown whether any, some, or all of the on-air talent that was associated with the show at HBO will make the jump to Showtime. Bob Costas, one of the hosts of the program, still has a contract with HBO, which might prevent him from moonlighting with such a direct competitor.
We’d been told in the wake of the show’s demise that HBO had been paying NFL Films $8 million per year for access to the company’s game highlights.
UPDATE: A media source suggests that the new version of the show will be staffed primarily with current CBS talent, with Jim Nantz playing the role of Bob Costas, Dan Marino playing the role of, um, Dan Marino, Boomer Esiason or Phil Simms filling the role of Cris Collinsworth, and Charley Casserly serving in the Peter King role.

This combined with Weeds Dexter and The Tudors makes Showtime the new “Must Have” Pay Channel.

I hope we they go back to the INFL. I don’t want to watch crap about Cowher’s daughters and how Jake Plummer can’t stop crying over GI Pat. It is inside the NFL, so make the show about the NFL.

I never understood NFL Films playing hardball on this issue. If Showtime or some other channel didn’t pick the show up how would it have replaced the lost $8 Million a year in revenue ???
Wouldn’t getting, say $6 or $7 MIL a year from HBO for their highlights be better than zero ??? And who’s to say Showtime is even paying that much ??? Seems to me that Showtime would have been dealing from a position of strength when it came to negotiations with NFL Flims, what with HBO having already dropped out after 30 years. Sometimes the grass ISN’T always greener NFL Films.
As for HBO - now they’ll lose tens of thousands of subscribers and their arch rival will gain subscribers because of this. Seems to be an unsound financial move on their part as well. One would have to believe this could have been worked out with HBO - especially after 30 years, loyalty should have counted for something.

Never seen it. Evidently it’s a big deal!
Whatever all else, I agree about Bob Costas - he’s a baseball guy thru & thru, why do they keep putting him on football shows? He makes “Football Night in America” feel like a book club meeting.

Nice. Glad to see Costas and Collinsworthless out. Would be GREAT to have Boomer in, the guy is good. Not so thrilled with Marino. But hey, anything is an improvement on the hack jobs of Costas, collinsworth, and King. Maybe now we can hear about some football, and less about the egos of the individual sportscasters. ESPN is worthless for genuine and good coverage, as was HBO. MAybe Showtime can bring some credibility back to NFL sports reporting.

With only Entourage back on HBO, I’m switching to Showtime. Weeds is totally awesome, heard great things about Dexter and Californication and now Inside the NFL. I either drop HBO or threaten Comcast to go to Satellite and get Showtime for free! Sounds like a win - win to me!

Good luck with that. After waiting an hour and a half on the phone to talk to some idiot in India who never heard of the NFL, you’ll be singing a different tune.
Is Harry Kalas still going to be the voice over on NFL Films?

I always thought that INFL jumped the shark when the y got rid of Nick and Len. Collingsworth went from being the worst of the four announcers to being the best. Half the show turned into human interest stories and comedian commentary, which ate into actually talking about the games.
Maybe Showtime can bring it back to what it originally was?

@meefer, it’d be too expensive for them to pick up the show.
@corydangerous, yes - no reason for NFL Films to change anything. They’re simply providing the highlights for the show.

Harry Kalas is still going strong, but his eyesight is slipping. Makes for interesting Phillies radio: “That ball is well hit…deep to center…it’s … caught by the second baseman!”. He should be able to do voiceovers for many years to come, though, so don’t worry.
