The Washington Redskins announced today that they have signed free agent safety Stuart Schweigert, a four-year veteran who had spent his entire career with the Raiders.
Schweigert, who was at the Redskins’ organized team activity today, said of finding work, “I feel like a 1,000-pound bear has been lifted off my chest.”
In what may or may not be related news, two veteran defensive backs, Shawn Springs and LaRon Landry, have been absent from OTAs, which are voluntary. Coach Jim Zorn says the absences are unexcused and that he hasn’t heard from either Springs or Landry.
To make room for Schweigert, the Redskins released linebacker Rian Wallace.
UPDATE: The Washington Times reports that Springs and Landry told teammates they missed OTAs because they missed their flights.

Springs is the antithesis of a leader. This is a great example. After boycotting OTAs every year he finally is going to attend; but pulls a move straight out of Fred Davis’ playbook. Redskins do need him for those 6 weeks he can stay healthy though.

“Coach Jim Zorn says the absences are unexcused…”
And we thought OTA’s were voluntary… Silly us.

good riddance to Schweigert. Now Skins fans can watch him leap in vain at other teams running backs and receivers as they spring by…

Schweigert will be fine. he won’t have to play the Raiders archaic cover 0 defense anymore. he’ll be a solid player, maybe even Pro Bowler.

As a safety, you need to ability to either tackle well, or pass defend well (or if you are John Lynch, live off a reputation built last millenium in Tampa). Schweigert does neither. He makes Deion Sanders look like Dick Butkus. I’ve never seen a safety take his position name to heart: he stayed “safe” on every play. Nobody could dive at an opposing RB’s ankles like Schweigert — and miss.
Redskin Fan will no doubt believe the Heavens have again opened and delivered unto them an athletic savior. But much like a scene at an all-you-can-eat buffet after Lenny P. has had his way with it, Snyder has another misfire and has the fans believing otherwise.

Hmmm…
I wonder why no smart alecky comments about Schweigert?
This site makes a living at taking cheap shots at players, and yet with such an easy target like Schweigert all lined up for the kill, the site pulls its finger off the trigger.
Interesting, considering how badly Schweigert has been throughout his career…
I wonder what the real criteria is that can get a player bashed or congratulated on this site.
