Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt declared on Monday that Matt Leinart is still the team’s starting quarterback.
“Matt’s our starter,” Whisenhunt said. “Kurt’s going to be there pushing him.”
Fine. But why then are Leinart and Warner sharing reps with the first team during offseason workouts?
It could be that Whisenhunt still plans to use his starter-reliever routine, which was generally working last season until Leinart’s collarbone went kaflooey. Then again, Leinart wasn’t too thrilled with getting yanked in favor of the grizzled veteran, who energized the offense nearly every time he came off the bench.
Warner isn’t content being the bullpen option; he still has designs on winning the starting job. “That’s basically what has been shared with me, that the best player’s going to play, and that’s how I look at it, and I believe everybody else is looking at it the same way,” Warner said. “I can only go on what I know and what I’ve been told. And with that, I’m going on the fact that I’m competing and I’m going to make every rep count and try to prove to these guys that I’m the best guy for the job.”
And even though Leinart is the starter, Whisenhunt recognizes that the two-time NFL MVP could indeed topple the 2004 Heisman winner. “It’s going to be a tough job for Matt to keep because Kurt played at a high level for us last year, and he’s been doing a lot of work in the offseason and he’s looked sharp in these drills,” Whisenhunt said.

Leinart had better win the QB comptetition outright, or he’ll justify his fall in the draft a couple of years ago.
Not that he probably cares but he’s becoming the poster boy for spoiled USC athletes (Reggie Bush is catching up to him, though).
Matt has to deal with Kurt Warner — a crafty, hard-working, and talented quarterback. If the Cards’ other starter were Kelly Holcomb, Gus Frerotte, or Joey Harrington, Leinart would be the undisputed #1.
Don’t underestimate Warner, he could win this thing.
And throw the Cardinals offense into mayhem for yet another year.

Heres the thing your team had drafted this guy with the 10th overall selection of 2006. Denny green plays him against the bears and the kid does absolutely great even leads them down the field in the 2 min drill for the victory which ultimately goes to pot because the kicker could not seal the deal. The next year ken whisenhunt comes in and changes the offense and now the cards are going to roll with a starter relief type of deal.
Everyone knew what type of qb matt leinart was going to be comming out of school and that was highly accurate, intelligent, with a not the strongest arm in the world. Basically meaning he would be a WEST COAST OFFENSE QB. Ken whisenhunt likes to go deep and thats something leinart can’t do like roethisberger. Denny set the cards up to run a good west coast offense too bad they fired him before we could see what they could really do. Maybe the cards should have fired the defensive coodinator and the Offensive line coach instead of firing the guy who drafted probably the best receiver tandem in the league. Or Better yet that moron they call a GM. If the cards want to make the playoffs sometime in the next five years they better make the offense work to matt leinarts capabilities since you have alot invested in him. If not trade him to a team that will use him correctly such as philly, or tampa bay

If I were a coach, I’d want the best player at a position to start, not the second best player.

If I were Matt Leinart, I’d lose the competition because Warner can’t play three games without exploding, and then the controversy would be over. If he only comes in as the “reliever” the season could be a long one.

the only thing left to motivate leinart is for whisenhunt
to build a bonfire under leinart’s ass.
god almighty, can anyone from usc play football?
it’s amazing that so few usc players acheive success
in the nfl.
maybe it’s pete carroll’s approach to coaching.when he
was coach of the jets in ny,the guy was a big rah rah
type of guy…geez if you were diabetic, his news

Exaggerate much? Off the top of my head: Palmer, Tatupu, Patterson, Polamalu are all excellent NFL players. Not to mention the 10 new draftees out of SC this year, 3 in the first and 3 in the second round.

usc players are soooo used to winning that the nfl can be a shock. cause ya dont win every week, or every week but one (unless yer the pats). for all warner’s issues (wife, small hands, injury prone), leinart could learn a helluva lot from him. but since warner wasnt damn near undefeated in college, i bet leinart wouldnt listen to a word he says.
and the “controversy” would re-erupt the second warner got healthier or leinart went down, jay.
green deserved to be fired. and didnt deserve to be hired in the first place. the only place that would hire him after that idiotic book was the cards. and then they wised up. he drafts his inmates and lets them run the asylum.

Either way you look at it - it’s a good problem to have
Competition at one position brings out the best as a player. Leinart knows that he has to step up or Warner will take over.
The Cards want Leinart to be the face and future of the franchise, but they won’t hand him the keys until he’s proven he can drive it and drive it well. This isn’t the old Cardinals - the owner (Mike Bidwill) and GM (Rod Graves) have done a great job drafting and bringing in FA’s to fill in a quality roster from top to bottom.

@Darth Ringo - If I was a Cards fan, I’d sure as hell not want Warner to start. Nothing against Warner, but not to overstate the obvious, he has two strikes against him:
1. He’s Old.
2. I doubt there’s anyone who thinks he can take them to the promised land
Starting Kurt Warner is like saying, “well… this year is a bust.” If I were a Cards fan, I’d hope to hell Lienhart shapes up.

I personally believe that Whisenhunt has goofed on his position. He is waffling about Leinart, which suggests a lack of confidence in him as the starting quarterback. If that is the case, then the right answer is to make the competition open in training camp, and may the best man win.
As for throwing the ball deep - Kurt Warner never had the strongest arm in the NFL, and on one occasion when he tried a Hail Mary last season the ball did not go that far, so the idea that Warner is going to run a deep-throwing vertical offense looks fanciful to me. Kurt’s strength has always been his accuracy, not his deep throwing ability. As for Leinart, I don’t really know how good he is because last season he was inconsistent and got himself injured. He needs to be able to play consistently and stay in games to make the starting position secure. Otherwise it will be the Kurt Warner No-Huddle Relief Show again.

Apparently, Ken Whisenhunt hasn’t learned a darn thing from his days in Pittsburgh. Didn’t they also platoon with Kordell and Maddox? How’d THAT work out for him?

Agree with arzcardinal, every team needs two good QBs these days. Whis is just playing the competition card, which I believe is good coaching. And, to be clear, Warner got 1st team reps on ONLY 1 day out of the first 5 days. I believe Leinart will have a good season, but Warner will probably see some playing time. Truth is, no QB has had a chance to be successful behind that terrible Cards O-line. I think this is the year they turn the corner and make the playoffs. moonbeam, you are an idiot. Palmer, Polamalu, Tatupu, Udeze, Steve Smith NYG, 7 picks in the first 2 rounds this year, even the much-maligned Reggie Bush has +2,300 yards and 14 TDs in two seasons. No one is taking Warner seriously as more than a spot back-up, as JayPhilly is exactly right, the old guy can’t last more than 3 games as a starter anyway. but, what a good character and experience guy to have as a back-up. Cards to the playoffs this season!

Leinart is not an NFL-caliber quarterback. That’s why he shouldn’t be named the Cardinal starting QB. In fact, he’s looking like the latest in a line of Cardinal 1st round QB draft busts dating back to Steve Pisarkiewicz and Kelly Stouffer.
His throwing arm lacks the strength and accuracy that is needed to thread the needle into tight NFL coverages. The overwhelming supporting talent at USC masked a lot of his flaws. His advertised “strength” was that he was the “most NFL-ready” QB in the 2006 draft. And yet after 2 seasons, we’ve found that he also lacks NFL-ready skills and maturity.
Leinart was given ample opportunity again in 2007…. And in the 1st 1/3 of the season, he posted a 60.9 passer rating (worst in the NFL), and averaged only 129 passing yards per game (also worst in the NFL). He averaged only 0.4 touchdowns per game, and threw 2 interceptions for every td. It was also noteworthy that Leinart didn’t complete a single touchdown pass in 2007 to Larry Fitzgerald and only 1 to Anquan Boldin.
And to complete the Ryan Leaf similarity, Leinart has suffered 2 season-ending injuries in his last 5 sacks! That’s pretty soft.
With the same surrounding cast last season, Kurt Warner managed to look every bit the 2-time NFL MVP that he is. He finished in the top-10 in most QB categories, including passer rating (89.8), yards per game, and touchdowns per game. In 2/3 of a season, he threw 27 touchdowns — and finished very strong with 21 TD’s in his final 8 games. The wide receivers also benefited — Boldin finished with 9 touchdowns and Fitzgerald finished with 10 (and was named to the 2008 Pro Bowl).
The Cardinals are a team that will likely disband after the 2008 season. Anquan Boldin, Darnell Dockett, Adrian Wilson, and Karlos Dansby are all grumbling, and they’re also some of the best players on the Cardinals’ roster.
If the Cardinals are smart (and they’re usually not — they’re led by the Bidwills, the most inept and cheapest owners in pro sports history), they’d realize that this could be their last year to contend before yet another rebuilding process. And Warner gives them their best shot at contending today.
Leinart? He certainly hasn’t shown any signs of being ready for 2008. At best, he’s a multi-year development project, but more likely he’s simply a bust.
Side Note: Did a commenter above really credit Leinart with a great game versus Chicago in 2006???? Revisionist history… and too funny!!!…. In that game, Leinart was handed 6 takeaways by a great Cardinal defensive effort, which led to a 20-0 lead at halftime (Rex Grossman finished with a 10 passer rating). In the 2nd half, Lovie Smith adjusted by taking away the short pass and forcing Leinart to throw 15 and 20 yards. The result? A 2nd half that featured 11 for 24 completions, a 50-something passer rating for Leinart, 1 Cardinal field goal, and a choked-away lead. In that 2nd half, Lovie Smith published the simple formula for stopping Leinart that the rest of the league has been using since.

Did DWF Trojan really describe Warner as an old guy who can’t last more than 3 games??? Hilarious!
Warner hasn’t missed a start due to injury in his last 2 seasons.
Leinart, on the other hand, has suffered 2 season-ending injuries in his last 5 sacks! Every 2.5 sacks, another Leinart season is ended!!! Fortunately for the Cardinals, they had a better QB ready to take over.
