With his eyes fixed squarely on his overall marketability as a movie star, Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor has asked to be traded . . . without asking to be traded.
He claims that he never has asked for a trade, but that he’d accept a trade if the team thought that a trade was in its interests.
“I told the Dolphins from Day 1 that if it was best for the organization I would be open to a trade,” Taylor said during a Sunday press conference.
But Taylor’s agent reportedly told the Dolphins from Day 1 that Taylor has no desire to be part of a rebuilding effort with a rag-tag team that won only one of 16 games in 2007.
“I want to win in ‘08,” Taylor said. “That’s what I want to do.”
And since it’s unlikely that the Fins will win in ‘08, then Taylor is essentially saying that he wants to be traded. However, if he’s not traded, Taylor says he’ll play for the Dolphins.
“I’m playing ball in ‘08. If [a trade] doesn’t work out then I’m a Miami Dolphin. . . . I love this place.”
Taylor also tried to put a pretty face on the abrupt and blunt comments from coach Tony Sparano last month. Sparano said that Taylor won’t be present for offseason workouts or for training camp, and that Sparano would say nothing further about Taylor.
“Tony and I have spoken about that, and I think what he was trying to accomplish is a little different than what came out,” Taylor said. “What Tony and I talk about will stay behind closed doors.”
Taylor won’t be attending this weekend’s minicamp, due to his brother’s graduation and a “legal matter” to which he needs to attend. It’s unknown whether Taylor has been excused from the mandatory three-day session, which opens on June 6.
Also, Taylor acknowledged that he was snubbed by Fins V.P. of football operations Bill Parcells during an offseason visit to the team facility. Parcells reportedly ignored Taylor while Parcells was reviewing film. Taylor reportedly was pissed at the dissing. The report conveniently surfaced after the Fins failed to trade Taylor prior to or during the 2008 draft.
“I’m not going to get into the incident,” Taylor said. “Did it happen? Yeah, but I’m not going to get into it.”

I’m getting fed up of this- isn’t there anything better to write about? This story makes both the organisation and Taylor look bad. Play or retire- I don’t care anymore. Why Taylor thinks he’s going to break the trend of NFL players failing to make it in film is beyond me. He needs to get into camp, have a better year than 2007 and try to improve his qualifications for the HOF. Failing that, he can retire, do 2-3 poor quality films then spend the rest of his life trying to justify why he threw away his HOF chance. Either way, let’s move on.

Oooohhhhh! Now I get it. So, if the Dolphins TRADE him this year, he’ll play for another team. But if they don’t…he’ll play for the Fins. Thanks for clearing that up JT. I can’t wait for his new superhero movie “Captain Obvious” to hit theaters in the summer of ‘09.

That’s not even close to what he said.

What was the reason for the press conference? Nothing new to announce. Nothing to really even confirm or deny. What a waste of time.

Keeerist! He’ll be traded when some team offers up enough. With luck, that will be sooner than later. More likely it will be sometime before the regular season FA trade deadline when a contender either realizes they need the guy’s services to have a shot or when their star DE/LB goes down. In the meantime it’s all yakkity yak blah blah.

The new Dolphins regime should trade or release JT. Why? This guy has given everything to this organization. We all recognize how hard it is for a guy his age to produce the way he is but he is still playing like an elite player. This guy is producin now because A. He has amazing tools and more importantly B. He works his body to be in its best physical shape and never gives up. He is the ultimate toughman. Does anyone here think they could ever achieve what JT has? This guy deserves the chance to win and not be the only person on his defense besides a criminal(Will Allen) that can make a play. Other defenders will only make plays because he can’t be everywhere at once when hes being double or triple teamed. So get off his back and let this guy campaign to go to a good team. Hopefully, a team will dangle a good enough package and get JT to a place where he can be viewed as a HOF candidate. Right now with all the losing there is no way hes going to the HOF. And tell me what good does it do for the Fins to hold onto JT? They’re going to lose a lot of ball games this year with him and its the same without him. Maybe they win one game because he makes some freakish play but other than that without other playmakers on the team they will lose. One man can only do so much.
What do you say Florio? These guys are people even though we think of them differently because of the money they make but they want their sacrifices to matter. They kill their bodies for entertainment and deserve the chance to reach the pinnacle of their sport, in this case the Super Bowl. I am sure we all felt good when Rob Blake won a Stanley Cup with the Avs a few years ago after close to 20 years in the NHL. Doesn’t JT deserve a ring?

Like the Tuna says either he plays for the Dolphins or he retires. His trade value just went down another notch. With the “I only want to play one more year!” Thanks for making it more difficult to trade you Twinkle toes!! See you in camp…

again I don’t understand all the fuss over him missing voluntary camps. this is the off season and even though you are expected to attend what excatly is he missing? the man is an all pro with nothing left to prove and wants to go out a winner. but mr.my way or the highway has decided to make an example out of him instead of proving what personal genius he is supposed to be in taking a 3rd round pick and selecting someone younger who will be around alot long than taylor. maybe if jason had decided to be crackhead, instead of planning for his life after football everything would be ok with the tuna. what a jerk and even though he still is a great player he is 34 and you will not get a #1 for him so make the deal or cut him loose.

He really and truly has an exaggerated sense of his own importance. Yeah, he’s created some buzz in the press and football circles with all this Dancing with the Stars crap and yes, he is (was?) a Pro Bowl caliber player, but do u REALLY need to host a press conference to address the situation?? If your name is Tom Brady or Peyton Manning, then the answer is probably “yes”. Other than that, its simply not necessary. Unless, of course, you have an unquenchable thirst for self-promotion and attention.
