Does everyone realize how ignorant it is basing a teams potential winning record on strength of schedule, when the whole point of the article is that there is a 50% turnover in "play off" teams???????????
Every win is a big win in this league!
When it comes to the AFC north, I personally think Florio painted himself into a corner, in knowing Pitt went backwards, and he cant be like the "real" media and pick the trendy pick (Browns), and the other two teams are, well, just not good.

frankburns big ben sucks d%ck than a 20 year experienced prostitute. the only thing big ben has going for him he's a great competitor so you have no room to claim carson palmer as a choker. i dont see the seahawks nor the panthers getting in.

How do ya figure that one chucklehead? Blown out knees are now a form of choaking? He's played one big game and gets rolled up as he's completing a 60 yard bomb....right on the money.

Sheeeeezz....what planet you from...oh, lemme guess. Planet Mars right outside the Steel City.

Don’t touch the Pattie Panzies fans , don’t touch the homewrecker Beeel Beeeelichick, Captain Hoodie from the Death Star! lololol These Pattie fanatics are way too predictable. Most of them bandwagoners I might add.

Does anybody understand what NR4 is saying? Something about Pats fans not liking Hoodsie cups while watching Star Wars?

P.S. Bungal fans are even crazier than Brownie boys if they think their team's going anywhere with Carson "Little Game Star, Big Game Choker" Palmer at the helm.

Good job not falling for every fool's trendy pick, the Cleveland Brownies. For a team that choked so hard down the stretch, they sure do have a following! This year the Brownies will have to play something that resembles a real schedule, and with Derek "Fader" Andersen and Brady "Subway Sandwich Boy" Quinn as the QB options, things look bad for the Clevies. Sorry Brownie fans, but it's not gonna happen for ya. Get ready for the Brownies to be golfing come playoff time once again.

i agree with the article. DEREK ANDERSON WILL NOT COME CLOSE TO THE NUMBERS HE PUT UP LAST SEASON. Every position the bengals needed desperate help in was addressed in the draft and the off season. All you dumb asses who will bring up the chad johnson situation are neglecting the fact that with or without chad the bengals has a top 10 offense. The defense has been upgraded tremendously. keith rivers, pat sims, antwan odom. F the browns and shitsburg and i wont get started on baltimore. the bengals will sweep the browns this year.

I have to agree with those who believe the comments about the Panthers receiving corps were a mistake. The last couple of seasons have been horrible because the Panthers haven't had anybody to catch the ball. Carter and Colbert couldn't catch a cold. With the addition of DJ Hackett and the return of Moose, the Panthers WR corps are 100% better.

I agree with the person above, the AFC North is a 2-team race between the Steelers and Bengals.

The Ravens dont have a QB, and the Browns were a fluke last season that only beat one team with a winning record, and that one win shouldnt even count because it was an overtime victory over Seattle in Cleveland. Seattle was 3-6 on the road (including the playoffs). Cleveland was exposed at the end of the year when Derek Anderson turned back into Derek Anderson and they were handled by the Bengals.

The Steelers are the Steelers. They should contend for the SB this year, but everyone is discounting the Bengals. They still have Carson Palmer at the helm and they have made slight improvements on D. As long as Palmer is the QB, .500 or just slightly worse than .500 is their floor. I wouldnt be surprised to see them win 10 or 11 games this year.

i hope those are not your picks by seed. if not they sound ok except for the 49ers-i just dont see them being a threat. besides, the giants are more likely than not to make the post season. i am a packers fan and dont really like the giants but they are a consisitant playoff team and the 9ers consistantly suck.

sgoodwins says:
June 1st, 2008 at 5:49 pm
Have you given any thought to the idea that the Giants have exposed the vulnerabilities of the Patriots that in the coming season, other teams will take advantage off and very possibly keep the Patriots out of the play offs?

Um yeah ok and the Giants happened to play the game of their life that night and you think the Patriots can't or won't adjust to that defense? They adjusted to that defense in the fourth quarter and it was the defense that let the Patriots down at the end of the game. The Patriots out of the playoffs? Who is going in their place the Jets???? That fat load of cow dung can't keep that running tab at Dunkin Donuts open after he gets fired at the end of next season for all that guaranteed money he doled out. Man I just can't stop laughing my a$$ off.......

Not sure where the supposed over-confidence is that you're speaking of in Kansas City. Most realistic fans know we'll not make the playoffs until at the soonest, 2009.

Also, if you knew anything about the franchise, you'd know that Clark Hunt will not fire Carl Petersen out of loyalty to his deceased father who wished for Carl to work out his contract with the club. I think that runs two more years. Herm is in place, Carl is in place... for at LEAST that long.

I love all the "Giants got hot at the right time" talk. They outplayed the Bucs, Cowboys, Packers, and Patriots and still some question them. The only way they do not go back to the playoffs for the 4th consecutive year is if Eli Manning misses significant time due to injury.

Mike, I know you're from the P'Burgh area, so you obviously know the Steelers well. However, as a lifelong Steeler fan, I believe this could be a big year for the Black and Gold. I'm going for 11-5 and the AFC title game, at least.

The one thing that you didn't mention in your original article is the Steelers difficult schedule. To me, that and that alone could keep the Steelers from the playoffs. Their schedule is one of the toughest I've seen for any team in years.

C'mon, Florio.

You have several teams that are odds on favorites to win their divisions losing ans leaving those divisions to the perennial bottom feeders. The Rams/9ers and the Ratbirds/Bungles are not going to be the division winners.

The Steelers and Browns will both finish somewhere around 10-6, 9-7, but one of them will win the division. With their tough schedules, probably only one of them will make it, but one of them for sure will.

What the #*@$ are you talking about with this "hubris" coming from Kansas City? Who? What? Where? They waved the white flag and traded one of their best players for draft picks, and you're saying their too confident? Who on the Chiefs is pulling a Jon Kitna and talking 10 wins?

Make some sense.

How can a team that gave Damien Woody $25 million and allows its other players to blackmail the front office into trading them or giving them a huge payday be accused of being reckless and desparate?

Oh wait - I think I just answered my own question. Of course Jets fans probably think this is part of the master plan of their MangIdiot - er I mean, Mangenius.

I agree with pac-eddy7, the Panthers won't make the playoffs, but it has nothing to do with the offense. The D-line that has fallen apart has not been put back together again. No depth at any of the positions, and not very good starters. Teams will run all over them, and have no problem sitting back waiting on open receivers. And I will pay $8 per beer to sit there and watch them from my seats tht went up 4.5% again this year.

Have you given any thought to the idea that the Giants have exposed the vulnerabilities of the Patriots that in the coming season, other teams will take advantage off and very possibly keep the Patriots out of the play offs?

I'm not going to mention the Giants because that's just too easy. They're going to win more regular season games in 2008 than they did in 2007, period. The reasons are endless.

The real glaring mistake on Florio's list is the Panthers. "But Carolina GM Marty Hurney still hasn’t done anything to establish a receiving threat across from Steve Smith" What??? Have you been in a coma Florio? Did you miss the signings of Muhsin Muhammad and D.J. Hackett? If Dwayne Jarrett can pull his head out of his butt they should have a very deep receiving corps. I'm not saying these guys are the best in the league, but compared to what they've had this is a HUGE improvement. I still don't think they make the playoffs, but it won't be due to their passing game.

Thank you Florio for helping spread the misconception that the NY Giants were just hot at the right time. The longer it takes for people to recognize that the talent on the team the longer they can fly below the radar. And the Giants always work better when no one believes they can win.

If the NFL has showed anything, it's that fans shouldn't realistically be surprised by any team either making or not making the playoffs. Some would be a little less anticipated than others, but overall, did anyone outside NY pick the Giants in ANY of their three playoff games after TB? No.

Hell, I barely read anyone who thought they would even go to the playoffs after the Vikings kicked their ass, and not too many more who thought they would get in at the beginning of the season.

Anything can happen. And on a slow news day, anything can happen, even Florio getting the jump on the only NFL-related column written by anyone in June and early July (no disrespect, Mike, you said it yourself, you're just milking the cow before everyone else gets a crack at it).

Dammit, Florio, you did it again. Kitna did NOT predict 10 wins. He did not say "we WILL win 10 games". He said he EXPECTED to be DISAPPOINTED if they don't win 10 games. He didn't make a bold (and stupid) prediction; he made a limp-wristed statement. He should have at least said he WILL be disappointed if they don't win 10. While that is still short of being a prediction, he left open the possibility that they might not even disappointed if they notch more than 6 losses. That's pretty weak.

You are usually good on calling other writers out on that kind of misrepresentation, so stop doing it yourself.

I can't believe you left out my Bears.

Would basically substitute the Bears for... oh... the Panthers.

Im going to have to agree with Matt2517. Ciny and Baltimore have no chance of winning the AFC North. The Steelers are always competitors for the division title and the Browns only got better from last year. I will be very surprised if Cincy and Baltimore improve their losing records from last year.

I don't know. Someone out of the AFC North has to win that puppy. I do not see it being the Bungles. I don't think it will be the Ratbirds either. I would think it would have to be either the Browns or my Steelers. I think my Giants would be able to just make the playoffs knowing them, but of course, they are sort of like the cardiact kids and they were like that last year, and they got hot at the right time so I could see a scenario where they would miss the playoffs (Super Bowl Hangover) like the 2006 Steelers did.

Cardinals. Lions, Chiefs and Jets don't make the playoffs next year? How can you be so bold? What's next? The sun will rise in the East in the morning?

I disagree with your comment that the Panthers didn't add any receiving help. Not that Muhsin Muhammad is a star, but if he's going to be modestly productive anywhere, it's in Carolina. They also added DJ Hackett, who I think can provide some explosion. Again, he's not a star or a big name, but the Panthers know they're a running team and making a large investment into another receiver just doesn't fit what John Fox wants to do.
I do agree that they won't make the playoffs... I just wanted to point out the inaccurate comment.

Florio loves playing the desperation card with the Jets. They may in face be desperate....but guess what? When they weren't desperate, they had below average talent. Now? They have better players.

Maybe the Lions, Texans, and Dolphins should show such desperation...

I read it before you posted it here actually. Yahoo! has the link to it. I have to say its pretty cool reading this site's filth through Yahoo! courtesy of the Sporting News.

Don't go getting too legit on us Florio. You made some really vanilla picks in that article. Detroit, Kansas City, New York Jets, the Arizona Cardinals?

Cue the Debber downer music, Florio just ruined everyone's dark horse pools.

So you have Pittsburgh out, Cleveland out, who the heck do you have winning the north? Baltimore has too many questions at qb, not to mention the fact that the D is old. Cinci? Right.......Sorry Cleveland or Pittsburgh will be in the playoffs, it may only be one of them, but they are the only 2 teams with a chance to win the division
