During a prior item for SportingNews.com, I took a look at the six 2007 playoffs teams that might not make it back to the postseason in 2008, based on the reality that there’s a 50-percent turnover rate when it comes to qualifying for the Super Bowl tournament.
Recognizing an opportunity to milk two more columns from this particular cow, I persuaded the powers-that-be to allow me to expand the concept into a three-part series. Part 2 looks at six non-playoff teams that won’t fill the spots on the dance card to be vacated by half of the 2007 field. Part 3 will try to peg the half-dozen teams that didn’t make it in 2007, but that will do so in 2008.
Thanks to an apparently ssssssslow news Sunday, Yahoo! has picked up Part 2, and plopped it onto the front page of the site. The proof appears below.
Though we appreciate the exposure, the fine folks at Yahoo! have now guaranteed that I’ll spend the rest of the day sifting through angry e-mails from the fans of the six teams listed in the article.

C’mon, Florio.
You have several teams that are odds on favorites to win their divisions losing ans leaving those divisions to the perennial bottom feeders. The Rams/9ers and the Ratbirds/Bungles are not going to be the division winners.
The Steelers and Browns will both finish somewhere around 10-6, 9-7, but one of them will win the division. With their tough schedules, probably only one of them will make it, but one of them for sure will.

Mike, I know you’re from the P’Burgh area, so you obviously know the Steelers well. However, as a lifelong Steeler fan, I believe this could be a big year for the Black and Gold. I’m going for 11-5 and the AFC title game, at least.
The one thing that you didn’t mention in your original article is the Steelers difficult schedule. To me, that and that alone could keep the Steelers from the playoffs. Their schedule is one of the toughest I’ve seen for any team in years.

I love all the “Giants got hot at the right time” talk. They outplayed the Bucs, Cowboys, Packers, and Patriots and still some question them. The only way they do not go back to the playoffs for the 4th consecutive year is if Eli Manning misses significant time due to injury.

Not sure where the supposed over-confidence is that you’re speaking of in Kansas City. Most realistic fans know we’ll not make the playoffs until at the soonest, 2009.
Also, if you knew anything about the franchise, you’d know that Clark Hunt will not fire Carl Petersen out of loyalty to his deceased father who wished for Carl to work out his contract with the club. I think that runs two more years. Herm is in place, Carl is in place… for at LEAST that long.

Have you given any thought to the idea that the Giants have exposed the vulnerabilities of the Patriots that in the coming season, other teams will take advantage off and very possibly keep the Patriots out of the play offs?
Um yeah ok and the Giants happened to play the game of their life that night and you think the Patriots can’t or won’t adjust to that defense? They adjusted to that defense in the fourth quarter and it was the defense that let the Patriots down at the end of the game. The Patriots out of the playoffs? Who is going in their place the Jets???? That fat load of cow dung can’t keep that running tab at Dunkin Donuts open after he gets fired at the end of next season for all that guaranteed money he doled out. Man I just can’t stop laughing my a$$ off…….

i hope those are not your picks by seed. if not they sound ok except for the 49ers-i just dont see them being a threat. besides, the giants are more likely than not to make the post season. i am a packers fan and dont really like the giants but they are a consisitant playoff team and the 9ers consistantly suck.

I agree with the person above, the AFC North is a 2-team race between the Steelers and Bengals.
The Ravens dont have a QB, and the Browns were a fluke last season that only beat one team with a winning record, and that one win shouldnt even count because it was an overtime victory over Seattle in Cleveland. Seattle was 3-6 on the road (including the playoffs). Cleveland was exposed at the end of the year when Derek Anderson turned back into Derek Anderson and they were handled by the Bengals.
The Steelers are the Steelers. They should contend for the SB this year, but everyone is discounting the Bengals. They still have Carson Palmer at the helm and they have made slight improvements on D. As long as Palmer is the QB, .500 or just slightly worse than .500 is their floor. I wouldnt be surprised to see them win 10 or 11 games this year.

I have to agree with those who believe the comments about the Panthers receiving corps were a mistake. The last couple of seasons have been horrible because the Panthers haven’t had anybody to catch the ball. Carter and Colbert couldn’t catch a cold. With the addition of DJ Hackett and the return of Moose, the Panthers WR corps are 100% better.

i agree with the article. DEREK ANDERSON WILL NOT COME CLOSE TO THE NUMBERS HE PUT UP LAST SEASON. Every position the bengals needed desperate help in was addressed in the draft and the off season. All you dumb asses who will bring up the chad johnson situation are neglecting the fact that with or without chad the bengals has a top 10 offense. The defense has been upgraded tremendously. keith rivers, pat sims, antwan odom. F the browns and shitsburg and i wont get started on baltimore. the bengals will sweep the browns this year.

Good job not falling for every fool’s trendy pick, the Cleveland Brownies. For a team that choked so hard down the stretch, they sure do have a following! This year the Brownies will have to play something that resembles a real schedule, and with Derek “Fader” Andersen and Brady “Subway Sandwich Boy” Quinn as the QB options, things look bad for the Clevies. Sorry Brownie fans, but it’s not gonna happen for ya. Get ready for the Brownies to be golfing come playoff time once again.

How do ya figure that one chucklehead? Blown out knees are now a form of choaking? He’s played one big game and gets rolled up as he’s completing a 60 yard bomb….right on the money.

Does everyone realize how ignorant it is basing a teams potential winning record on strength of schedule, when the whole point of the article is that there is a 50% turnover in “play off” teams???????????
Every win is a big win in this league!
When it comes to the AFC north, I personally think Florio painted himself into a corner, in knowing Pitt went backwards, and he cant be like the “real” media and pick the trendy pick (Browns), and the other two teams are, well, just not good.
