Packers defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila had arthroscopic knee surgery Thursday and is out until training camp.

The team says the surgery, which Packers team doctor Patrick McKenzie conducted in Green Bay, was more a precaution than a cause for alarm.

“It’s something that, he’s not a young puppy anymore, and it is something that’s kind of been bothering him of late, so Pat McKenzie thought it was best to do something now,” Packers coach Mike McCarthy said.

Gbaja-Biamia, who will turn 31 in September, has stayed relatively healthy throughout his NFL career. The Packers’ Week 13 loss to the Cowboys last season is the only game he’s missed in the last five years. But he reported pain, discomfort and swelling during organized team activities.

The Packers have several injured players on their defensive line: tackle Justin Harrell had back surgery in April, Daniel Muir has missed some practice with a pectoral injury, Johnny Jolly has an injured shoulder and tackle Colin Cole has an injured forearm. McCarthy says he expects them all to be healthy for training camp.
