If there’s a reason other than a contract dispute for Jason Peters’s absence from Bills voluntary workouts, it’s being kept very well hidden by all parties.

Buffalo’s starting left tackle remained MIA as the team wrapped up their second week of OTAs today and remained incommunicado about the reason for his absence. The Bills aren’t talking either, even though Peters is the only player to miss every workout. While he had surgery for a sports hernia, he should be sufficiently recovered to be cleared physically which leaves his contract as the only reason why he wouldn’t be participating.

Peters is set to make $3.25 million this season, the third year of a deal signed before the 2006 season. Usually such a short time before angling for a new deal would be a bad sign but there are extenuating circumstances which help Peters’s case. The Bills moved him from right to left tackle, he thrived after the switch and he’s paid much less than two of his linemates. Michael Roos just got $7 million per from the Titans to play left tackle, it seems eminently reasonable for Peters to get the same.
