The Cincinnati Bengals announced today that they have terminated the contract of wide receiver Doug Gabriel.
A five-year veteran who signed with the Bengals on April 8, Gabriel will now become an unrestricted free agent.
Gabriel didn’t play at all in the 2007 regular season after the Raiders released him in training camp. He played his first three seasons in Oakland, then was traded to New England before the 2006 season. When the Patriots waived him he re-joined the Raiders for the end of 2006. For his career, Gabriel has 101 catches for 1,550 yards and eight touchdowns.
Considering how badly the Bengals need warm bodies at wide receiver after Chris Henry was released and with Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh sitting out the off-season, Gabriel was, presumably, not particularly impressive during the Bengals’ voluntary practices.
The Bengals also announced that they have signed cornerback Jerrid Gaines, an undrafted free agent from Miami of Ohio. Gaines was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Browns shortly after the draft, but Cleveland released him on May 4.

Just 3 days ago Chick Ludwig spoke in glowing terms about Gabriel in the Sporting News Team Report. It appears that Chick was watching someone else . . . “Keep an eye on WR Doug Gabriel. He has looked impressive in the offseason workout program. He’s showing good speed, running crisp routes and making tough catches in traffic over the middle and on comeback routes near the sidelines. With Pro Bowlers Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh working out on their own and away from the team, Gabriel has developed good chemistry with QB Carson Palmer.”

Doug Gabriel was thought to have had a lot of potential, but he never amounted to much on game days. Apparently he doesn’t even practice all that well now.

That’s hysterical… “not particularly impressive” That’s like saying Britney Spears is “not remarkably classy” or that Charlie Weis is “not exquisitely svelte.”

Oh goodie! Another loser for Mike Brown II, oops I mean Bill Parcells, to sign with the Fins. They just lost Tab Perry so maybe this is the worst available guy they can sign up now. With mediocre QBs, you’ve got to have decent receivers. At least the Bungles have Carson Palmer and TJH and the Whiner (who will show up).

TJ has never attended OTA’s. He has a really awesome work-out regiment in California. The current and rookie WR squad looks great incredibly atheletic and intelligent. Infact looking through all NFL teams the Bengals have more WR’s than anybody at last count 12 thats plenty of warm bodies.

Yeah Snake, the Skins, no doubt. They’re desperate for WRs. They didn’t just draft two and a pass catching TE.

Wingnut….
From what I was reading he was doing really well in ota’s. Palmer and him had apparantly developed a good chemistry. I guess he was a victim of numbers. You cannot always take talent over experience, and I hope that they are considering that. But the guy hasn’t played in the league in two years so that must hold some water. Good luck to Doug anyhow.
