The Cincinnati Bengals announced today that they have terminated the contract of wide receiver Doug Gabriel.

A five-year veteran who signed with the Bengals on April 8, Gabriel will now become an unrestricted free agent.

Gabriel didn’t play at all in the 2007 regular season after the Raiders released him in training camp. He played his first three seasons in Oakland, then was traded to New England before the 2006 season. When the Patriots waived him he re-joined the Raiders for the end of 2006. For his career, Gabriel has 101 catches for 1,550 yards and eight touchdowns.

Considering how badly the Bengals need warm bodies at wide receiver after Chris Henry was released and with Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh sitting out the off-season, Gabriel was, presumably, not particularly impressive during the Bengals’ voluntary practices.

The Bengals also announced that they have signed cornerback Jerrid Gaines, an undrafted free agent from Miami of Ohio. Gaines was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Browns shortly after the draft, but Cleveland released him on May 4.
