Media reports from England (where, to Channing Crowder’s ongoing amazement, English is the primary language) indicate that Browns owner Randy Lerner will be having a greater emphasis on the soccer team he owns.
And this presumably means that Lerner will be less involved with his American football team.
Per the Guardian, Lerner will establish a “permanent residence” in Midlands and become the chief executive officer of the team.
The fans of the Aston Villa team have been encouraged by Lerner’s ownership of the team, which began in August 2006. Whether the fans of the Browns are encouraged by Lerner’s reduced involvement in the team they follow remains to be seen.

This will be great for the Browns, I don’t know about how Aston Villa fans will see it…
I know villa now has the money to buy some groceries, they are looking at Danish defender Michael Lumb, they already have Laursen on their roster a member of the team of the year… lets hope they’ll sell him to LFC…
Browns, Bills and Texans will show their true colors in ‘08….

This explains the hiring of Keenan as Browns club president. After Collins left, Lerner told the media that he would personally oversee many of the president’s duties until another one was hired. Apparantly, he’s tired of doing that after two and a half years and wants to tinker with his other sports team for a while. I’m just pleased to see he was smart enough to hire somebody to take over the work he was doing.

It’ll be Gareth Barry going to LFC this summer, the only question is if Crouch/Carson/Riise goes the other way or whether it’ll be a straight cash deal. You just know Tottenham/Everton/Blackburn/Citeh will be stronger next term and AVFC will need to strengthen to maintain and continue to challenge.

We have Savage. We don’t need Lerner, we just need his wallet.
Besides with the exception of the ill fated coup a few years ago both Lerners, father and son, have been hands off owners who have been great for the Browns.

2/4 responses show in-depth knowledge of Soccer deals….. I’m impressed.
Could you imagine owning multiple sports teams to the extent that you could just put one on auto-pilot while you tinker with a new one? Enjoy that ride Lerner!

Haha, so many childish responses. Let people talk ’soccer’ if they like.
Villa have definately made progress with Lerner at the helm. It’s interesting to note that there was no opposition to his takeover (a-la the Glaziers at Manchester United) mainly because Villa had declined somewhat over the last 10 years.
Anyway, I think he certainly gets a great deal of reward from Villa as a club. The fans love him, and don’t just see him as a blank cheque (like the guy above) which is all too common with NFL fans.
Finally, I don’t know what will happen with Barry. He seems inclined towards the Scousers though, which is a shame. If Lerner truely wants to cement his status with the club, he could do no better than convincing their best player to stay.
Back to the NFL…

and i’d like to say i’m impressed that several PFT readers have enough brain capacity to enjoy more than one sport, without having to knock those that they don’t enjoy.
sorry american football fans, just because you don’t like something doesn’t mean it sucks.

While I’m no fan of soccer, it’s pretty amusing to see you keyboard jockeys crack on any sport or physical activity.

I guess the majority on here have the ability to comprehend ‘forin sports’ too. Kudos. On many other sites, you find a massive amount of ignorance regarding (what I call) football.
Incidentally, I’m not particularly edgy because of the two broken ribs and torn achilles that I suffered at ’soccer’ two weeks ago. Nor the fact that I managed to play on for a good 10mins with the former, only to actually have to go to hospital for the latter.
Damn, those girls play some hardball.

A minor point, Florio, but it’s the Midlands, not just Midlands. It’s kinda like me saying that Jim Irsay’s decided to spend more time in Mid-West.
As to Villa, they have one of the two best coaches in the league (assuming Chelsea don’t appoint Hiddink, and it doesn’t look like they will). If I were Gareth Barry, I would think long and hard about whether to jump ship to Liverpool, because with Lerner’s money behind them and O’Neill at the tiller I see it as distinctly possible that Villa could finish in front of the Scousers next year. Liverpool are a serious injury to Gerrard away from being in big, big trouble, with Everton potentially leap-frogging them as well.
And no, I’m not a Villa fan.
