In Pittsburgh, the late Myron Cope was universally beloved as a sports commentator. Over the past several years, Mark Madden has become Cope’s heir from a profile standpoint. The difference, however, is that to the extent Madden was going for a Cosellian love-hate shtick, more people seemed to hate Madden than love him. (If Madden’s goal was to be loved, picking a fight with a beloved local figure like Steelers receiver Hines Ward didn’t help.)
Folks in the ‘Burgh have the opportunity to neither hate nor love Madden, at least for now.
Madden has been permanently removed from his ESPN Radio show in Pittsburgh, due to inflammatory (and unfunny) remarks he made last week about Senator Ted Kennedy. Said Madden: “I’m very disappointed to hear Sen. Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts is near death because of a brain tumor. I always hoped Senator Kennedy would live long enough to be assassinated.”
“We’ve taken Mark off the air pursuant to our contractual rights,” said ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz.
Madden most likely will resurface with a lower-profile radio station in Pittsburgh that is angling for ratings points and all the good things that go along with hanging a “for sale by owner” sign on one’s soul.

Madden’s been a loser going all the way back to his days in WCW… how does a wrestling announcer get a job in sportsradio? Only in Shitsburgh.

there are much, much worse things said about our current president and others everyday on msnbc. however, i would not justify bad behavior by pointing out other bad behavior, madden should have been disciplined. i’ve enjoyed his show, but he, like many others taking over the sports talk airwaves, crosses over the line of decency too many times. i don’t think many of these guys think about the possibility of my child being in the car with me when they’re on the air. i’m sure some station looking for that “howard stern quality” will give him a job soon.

As a Bengals fan, I despise this guy. This just reinforces my belief that he’s a complete moron. He can’t stop to think that a comment like that might get him fired? Jackass

the local station management was constantly threatening to suspend him as they were charging the highest drive time ad rates in the market and running Essentially Self Promoting Network taglines indentifying themselves as “the mark madden station”…love him or hate him, they still listened…by the way, the correct joke is “i hope ted kennedy’s brain tumor doesn’t affect his driving ability”.

Yells in an slobbery emphatic staccato tone with a slight lisp and makes the most painfully obvious comments.
Pure bluster, no insight. How could anyone miss this dipstick?

Finally, the idiot has been removed. He’s an embarrassment to the city and to anyone with an IQ above 60. I’m sick of these shock-jock sports commentators who just fly off the handle without knowing the first thing about what they’re talking about.
Please, let him go to some other city to pollute their airwaves.

I’m with Klutch. I had a hard time not submitting to schadenfreude when the Kennedy news broke. I doubt the family of Mary Jo Kopechne were shedding any tears and I’m betting none of the families of dead soldiers who he helped put in their graves with his inexcusable actions shed any tears either.
That said, these shock jock sports guys need to be reigned in considerably. Just because you can say something doesn’t mean you should.

What did he say that was so wrong? I am sure Mary Jo Kopechne and her family appreciate his thought. Screw Kennedy…he should have been the Kennedy to die, not his two honorable brothers. If I were on the air, I would say that I hope he has a slow, long, painful death the piece of garbage.
Otherwise, get well soon Teddy.

i don’t hate him or love him, he’s completely irrelevant, and it’s a shame it took this long to have him removed. let’s hope he gets replaced with someone who knows something about sports. so tired of the “i’m in your face, i’m so controversial, please hate me” shtick that so many people in the media think they need to do to get attention/ratings.

This is the same idiot that for a time was part of the worst announcing team ever in pro-wrestling (mainly because he was a part of it)? Someone actually gave this idiot a job? I haven’t heard him as part of this gig but if his previous work and level of intelligence are any indication it had to be (comic book guy voice) the worst show ever.
