The trade was made possible because of the holiday weekend. With no waiver wire on Friday because of the Memorial Day holiday, the Vikings couldn't process James' release until 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

Over the weekend several teams inquired with James' agents about putting in a waiver claim on the injured defensive end.

The Redskins were forced to act because off-season waiver claims are processed in reverse order of a team's record from the previous season, meaning 20 teams had priority over the Redskins. By making the conditional trade, the Redskins controlled James' rights.

THINK ABOUT IT.....NOT THAT HARD TO FIQURE OUT.

This is actually a somewhat rational move from the Redskins for once -- in the past they would have traded a first day pick and signed James to a massive contract with terrible cap implications. Rich McKay and the Redskins, two peas in a pod when it comes to giving out wild contracts to marginal players.

I liked what I saw out of Erasmus when he did play, but it seemed his injuries were always worse than initially reported or he just doesn't recover the way a pro football player is expected to (I don't know if it's lack of effort or his body just doesn't respond).

Given he was initially released a few days into OTAs I suspect he wasn't moving around the way he was expected at this point in his latest rehab. I think it was already questionable if he'd be ready for the start of the season, so if he's behind in his rehab now and has a history of not recovering in a timely manner, I don't expect to see much from him this year no matter who's paying his contract.

It's a win/win for the Redskins...if he doesn't make the team, no loss. Doesn't matter if he faield the physical (which the Vikings intially declared)in May, it matters in July and forward. Hail!

nybeez80 and gibsonplyer,

How about learning a little something about waiver wire rules before you open your trap? (Stick to TMZ or Inside Edition posting please.) Seems to me that the move of a 7th round CONDITIONAL pick (look that one up to) for 1st round potential is solid. Ignorant/uneducated people giving opinions. That seems about right. (Bet you both voted for Bush.)

Not a bad move for a seventh rounder, if he makes the roster, he will contribute more than a seventh rounder. Still waiting for Danny Boys big splash this offseason.

He would have had to clear waivers, which is why the Skins grabbed him. The 7th rounder is contingent on him making the roster. If the Skins cut him this summer they owe the Vikings nothing.

Not to be a Redskins apologist or anything.

Since he has less than 4 years of experience, did he have to clear waivers? I'm thinking so, since he was waived (and not released) last friday. Maybe another team higher in the pecking order would have claimed him, thus forcing the Redskins into surrendering some compensation for him.

Not to attack the Skins or anything but why? While I don't really know anything about the player if he was about to get cut why give them anything even if it was just a conditional 7th? Let the Vikes cut him and have his old coach give him a call and he'll likely come running.

wow I didn't know you could rescind a release after it was announced... Oh well a 7th rounder is better then nothing.

It already starts with the redskins giving up their draft next year :)

So the Skins gave up a draft pick for a player they could have just signed on the open market. That seems about right. Florio how about criticizing your team for a change?
