There aren’t many guys who started 57 of their first 59 games for a perennial playoff team available on the open market come June. Of course, Shane Olivea’s run as a starter ended when he was benched in November but, still, he put in enough quality work with the Chargers to get a six-year deal in 2006.
He was released at the end of February by San Diego and drew some looks from the Jets before they signed Damien Woody to play right tackle. Even with a history of back problems and some of the shorter arms in the NFL, it’s surprising that Olivea hasn’t found gainful employment for the 2008 season. Well, it would be if he hadn’t found employment with a mystery team.
The 49ers, looking for depth behind Jonas Jennings and Joe Staley, inquired about Olivea’s availability recently but, according to the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat, were told that he’d already agreed to terms with another team. He’s expected to sign with said team in June, presumably after they cleared some cap space. If Olivea were a wide receiver I’d put my money on the Saskatchewan Rough Riders but he isn’t, which makes things much tougher.
Who could it be? Baltimore, Carolina, Denver, Detroit and Oakland all fit the bill as teams that might welcome some veteran competition for the right tackle spot but almost everyone could use some depth.

I would definitely wager that he has been on the Raven’s radar since he was cut by San Diego this off-season. He and Cam have history together, he would be able to step in and compete for a starting spot right away, the Ravens desperately need veteran depth on the OL…this is a win/win for Olivea since he was bumped from the starting spot in San Diego.
The Ravens are probably waiting till after June 1st to finalize Jonathan Ogden’s decision and it will have an effect on the cap.
Adam Terry is much more natural at the LT spot and Olivea is a proven vet on the right side of the line.

That’s “some of the shortEST arms”. Unless there are only two arms in the NFL.

Florio always seems to overlook the Chiefs when projecting where players might go. Who will be playing right tackle for the Chiefs next year? Exactly.

Hick towns like Ottawa???? Zombie Patriot first of Regina is more of a Hick town then Ottawa since the only thing that comes through there are Cattle shows. Second if it wasn`t for former Ottawa Players like Joseph you wouldn`t have even won the Cup.

I’m not buying it. Why not sign now, instead of June? Teams can clear cap space right now if they want by designating (up to 2) players as June 1st cuts per the CBA rules. Olivea won’t affect Compensatory picks because he was released.
I’m not sure this passes the sniff test. I think it’s an agent looking to draw out some interest in his client.

The Redskins can always use some depth on O line and have the cap space to swing it.

Bob E Smash, spoken like a true easterner. Oblivious to what happens in the western part of Canada and unable to read a comment with inherent sarcasm (I’m sure it is widely known that Ottawa is not a town and the main focus of the statement was the quip regarding spelling). Either way I look forward to watching the Roughriders crush the… oh yeah… that’s right Ottawa for all its illustrious size and might cannot support a football franchise. As to Kerry Joseph I would be one of many who never liked him, was happy when he was traded and who recognized the Roughriders won the Grey Cup in spite of not because of his involvement.
As to any who might criticize the CFL from this point: Say what you will. I am a football fan and enjoy both games.

Well said, Zombie Patriot. Hey, who knows, the Riders could always use some depth on the O-line, if we have room for another import.
I’ll see you at the cattle show.

How much time does Lito Sheppard have on his contract? Perhaps the Eagles have a deal in place to trade him, but want to wait until after June 1 for cap reasons, then will use that room to sign olivea? Nah, the eagles are rarely up against the cap.
Honestly, the Ravens/Ogden suggestion by RavensFan19 makes the most sense so far. Particularly since he would already know Cam’s offense, so missing OTAs and minicamps wouldn’t be as much of a detriment.
I’d suspect the deal has to be pretty promising and based on an old relationship to be turning down discussions with other teams at this point. Veterans who don’t have jobs by June usually don’t have jobs in September either.

I would be surprised if Carolina’s in the mix; they have to pay Otah, they’ve signed a big bunch of guys along the line, and the D-line is still dubious at best, at least on paper.
Having said that, they’ll probably give him a 7-year deal for $50 million and he’ll enjoy late July in Spartanburg, SC.

shamrock - good point about the ability to designate cuts as post June 1. One possibility is that the interested team already made two post-June 1 moves this offseason. (I have no idea if any teams have already named both June transactions)
Another possibility would be with a team like Denver (which I don’t think is where Olivea signs), The Broncos are at the 80 man roster limit already. Presumably they know what they are getting out of a veteran like Olivea. By delaying the contract, Denver could spend more time evaluating the other OT’s on the team (or other bubble players) during OTA’s and minicamps before they have to cut someone.
The only thing I disagree with is your conclusion about the sniff test. I don’t see how turning down an offer by stating that you already have a deal in place for June would help to drum up interest in your client. More likely, it would result in his name being crossed off of most teams’ lists.
And given all the CFL trash talking floating around, have any of you seen a CFL game in the USA?

Hey MattR,
Don’t forget, maybe they caught a Shreveport Pirates game, or we might have some closet Baltimore CFL’ers fans here.
(although it’s more likely that Olivea did sign with the Riders)
