A league source tells PFT that free agent running back Michael Pittman will sign a one-year contract with the Denver Broncos.
Pittman, who has 10 years of NFL experience, will join a crowded backfield in Denver that includes veteran Travis Henry and youngsters Selvin Young and Andre Hall. Rookie fifth-round pick Ryan Torain is also in the mix.
Pittman spent the first four years of his career with the Cardinals and the last six with the Buccaneers. He’ll turn 33 in August, but he’s still productive in limited action, having averaged better than four yards a carry each of the last five seasons.
When he signed with Tampa Bay in 2002, Bucs coach Jon Gruden thought Pittman was the perfect fit as a combined run-catch threat in Gruden’s offense. But since the Bucs selected Cadillac Williams in the first round of the 2005 draft, Pittman has mostly served as a role player rather than an every-down back, which is what he’ll continue to be in Denver.

Since Selvin Young is going to rush for 2000 yards, why sign Pittman?

I don’t know if this means T. Henry will be cut or not, but just in case he can’t go or gets injured (again) this will ensure veteran presence/experience in the backfield.

Between Travis Henry making babies and Michael Pittman running them over with his SUV, the folks in Denver should have plenty to look forward to this year. Running back chaos, indeed.

no jokes about him driving his car into his wife and child’s car? nothing on his 48in biceps?
i liked him in tampa. he had no problem doing whatever was asked. I personally loved seeing Gruden send him in to crack the d-lineman on passing plays and then slide out for a screen.

Let’s just make sure Denver doesn’t cheat on the salary cap with deferred payments to sign him…
No one should ever forget that the Broncos are the team that was caught not once but twice cheating on the salary cap and then hit with the biggest fine in NFL history - nearly $2 million dollars.
Can NFL fans ever forgive them for damaging the integrity of the game?
The football world shouldn’t accept anything less than Pat Bowlen being suspended from football for a full season - if not a lifetime ban.

What a joke.. Trying to compare the Broncos salary cap with the Cheatriots. Classic Pats fan still trying to justify their cheating ways.
I’d rather my team be hit with the biggest fine in NFL History rather than being forever associated with cheating.
Keep using the Broncos salary cap as your scapegoat. You’re still the biggest cheaters out there.

BroncoLen - I said nothing about the Patriots. How dare you try to compare the Broncos getting caught twice for the same thing and being fined nearly three times as much as the Patriots
You seem a little sensitive about it even though there’s no denying the fact that significant amounts of salary were deferred. $29 million in deferred payments to quarterback John Elway and running back Terrell Davis isn’t chump change. I guess they weren’t really big parts of the Denver Super Bowls though, were they?
I know Al Davis, who had said that Broncos owner Pat Bowlen should be suspended for salary cap violations probably felt vindicated by the fines and lost draft picks though. I’m sure you remember that Davis contended that the Broncos’ circumvention of the salary cap helped them win the Super Bowl in the 1997 and ‘98 seasons.

If Travis Henry gets cut, how’s he going support all his baby mommas? Lord knows he’s got a lot of them. Man, if only I had known, I would have bought latex low and sold high.

Ha!
The only thing I’m sensitive about is you mentioning the Patriots in the same breath as the Broncos.
First off, Elway deferred his salary because Pat Bowlen gave him a stake in ownership. There’s no way Elway would’ve hit the free agency market, he was and always will be a Bronco (which is something Al Davis was envious of). Secondly, Terrell Davis was a sixth round pick who flourished in the Broncos system. He restructured his contract and payed back the organization who gave him a shot when no one else would. These are agreements between MEN, not a lame effort to cheat the fans of quality football… You’re arguing apples vs. oranges… In this case yours are sour apples. Get over it CHEATERS. YOU CHEATED

My goodness BroncoLen, you’re really worked up about this… it’s just a sport after all. In the interest of good PFT fan relations I’m willing to go along with your “interpretation” for now.
So let me see if I understand you… this is really all about jealousy… and while sure, the Broncos might have technically “cheated” on the salary cap by deferring part of Elway’s salary as a percentage of ownership when he retired, the Salary Cap’s really more of a guideline than a important rule.
I guess the Broncos probably thought they found a loophole and didn’t realize they were breaking a rule at all - they just interpreted it differently… even though the rule seemed pretty clear to most coaches - including Al Davis.
That WAS kindof interesting wouldn’t you say? One owner calling for the suspension of another owner. I’m trying to recall now which owner has called for Bob Kraft’s suspension. I’m sure you can tell me.
Maybe “everyone was doing it” when it came to cheating on the Salary Cap just as we know from Jimmy Johnson and Matt Walsh that other teams were taping from the sidelines. But actually I’m having a tough time recalling other teams that were caught for that sort of cheating.
But one thing is for sure, cheating on the Salary cap isn’t really cheating - and a $2 million fine and the loss of two draft picks is really just a slap on the wrist because it’s clearly not a serious infraction of the rules.

Garret says: Jeez, does everything have to turn into a Pats vs The World? Get a freakin’ life!
I agree Garrett. No one mentions a word about the Patriots and BroncoLen has to bring them up to defend the Broncos cheating on the salary cap. Maybe he thinks the Patriots loss of one draft pick and a $750,000 makes the Broncos $2 million and two lost draft picks look like less of a penalty in comparison?
