Last week, we wrote that someone needs to nail down the question of whether former Pats video employee Matt Walsh taped the defensive coaching signals of the St. Louis Rams during the 2001 regular-season game played between the two teams.
If Walsh did, then there would be a real possibility that the tape was used in an effort to crack the Rams’ code for the teams’ Super Bowl XXXVI rematch.
Buried in a Q&A session between Walsh and the New York Times is the apparent answer to the question. Asked what his duties were during that regular-season game, Walsh said: “Filmed, to the best of my recollection. I can’t specifically say I remember the details of what I filmed.”
So the answer to the key question is “maybe”.
We’re concerned, frankly, by the equivocal nature of Walsh’s response. Faced with an opportunity to remove a fairly large cloud of concern from the Pats’ unexpected achievements in 2001, Walsh pulled out the “I don’t remember” card, even though his memory on other topics is as clear and thorough as Rain Man’s knowledge of the phone book from A through half of G.
How could Walsh not remember whether the team’s then-fledging taping experiment would return the ultimate payoff by giving the Pats video evidence of the Rams’ defensive coaching signals as the two teams prepared to meet in the Super Bowl?
Surely, Walsh didn’t tape the Rams’ defensive coaching signals during that regular season game. Otherwise, he would have said that he did. His failure to say that he didn’t in unmistakable terms is, in our view, disgraceful.
Our guess is that Walsh knew that he’d be running afoul of the terms of his indemnity agreement with the NFL if he said he taped the 2001 regular-season game with the Rams, and so he opted to allow the doubt to continue to hover on this specific question. And Greg Bishop of the New York Times, whose puff pieces on folks like Walsh lawyer Michael Levy, former Patriots quarterback Drew Bledsoe, and former NFL exec Charley Casserly possibly were rewarded with scoops such as the submission of tapes from Matt Walsh to the NFL, an off-the-record statement from a former Pats player (Bledsoe?) regarding the cheating scandal, an unnamed quotes from a longtime NFL exec with knowledge of competition committee meetings (Casserly?) regarding the supposed focus of cheating complaints on the Pats, failed in his duty to play both sides of the story evenly by not pressing Walsh as to the ludicrous nature of his supposed failure of recollection.
So even though Walsh stopped short of claiming that the Pats engaged in more widespread cheating than previously reported, we believe that part of his plan was to cause as much trouble for the team as he possibly could, while at the same time protecting himself against any claim that he was intentionally lying.

“Walsh Didn’t Tape Rams”… what kind of a headline is that? Is tomorrow’s going to be “Walsh Didn’t Tape Bengals” and so on until we get through the entire league? It reminds me of the Monty Python sketch about TV for parrots where there is a news broadcast that reports on a crash on the highway where the reporter leads with the phrase “No parrots were involved in an accident on the M!…”. Non-action is not news.

“To these holier than though “Pats are cheaters” folks, please for once explain the following: Favre cheated (when he took a dive for Strahan) but nobody cared. Jimmy Johnson taped signals but nobody cared. Other than the three rings and the arrogance, what’s the difference? It’s not “Pats fans” attacking Walsh; it’s anyone not blindly loyal to the other teams. If stealing signals was illegal, I might feel differently, but crucifying Belichick for 8 months now for using a camera, when his “advantange” could be negated with wristbands and paper is insipid.
Belichick’s only guilty of caring more than the other guy about winning. Last I checked, that’s his job, he gets paid millions to do exactly that. And in a world where coaches like Herm are allowed to switch teams, Kraft has a coach obsessed with winning. I applaud Belichick.
I’m a lifelong Falcons fan, and I’d kill for Jim Mora Jr. or Bobby Petrino to have been more like Bill Belichick. As for Mike Smith, he’s got Dmitroff to steer him in the right direction, there’s hope at last!”
At least one non-Pats fan gets it!

Disgraceful is the correct word all around. Matt Walsh is disgraceful for not being honest over, over, over, over, and over again and trying to put the New England Patriots in the worst possible light out of bitterness. What a lying weasel.
Bill Belichick’s lies regarding taping and not knowing he was breaking rules are disgraceful as well.
The NFL’s handling of spygate initially was disgraceful, as we will never know what was in those original tapes; and the reason said for the destruction of the tapes was purely a lie.
Spygate in general, for all parties involved, including the media (John Tomase, and all other media that went along without verification of fact) …
Disgraceful.

Florio, I don’t get this article.
One, you say “WALSH DIDN’T FILM RAMS DURING 2001 REGULAR SEASON” but that is exactly what he said he did — filmed the Rams.
Two, you make a big deal out of him saying he can’t remember the specifics, when all he said was he did not recall the specifics of what he filmed. It’s an unreasonable interpretation of that sentence to conclude that Walsh didn’t film the defensive signals — that’s what he was consistently filming. He was saying it was his practice to film the defensive signals and so that’s what he believes he was doing, but he doesn’t remember this game specifically. It’s hardly surprising that he doesn’t remember this particular not-terribly-noteworthy game. I’m sure you remember some random stuff vividly and other stuff not so much. If Walsh was out to screw the Pats, he would have said yeah I specifically remember taping this game and no one would have been able to prove that he was wrong, so no risk of losing the protection of the indemnity agreement (as if the Pats were going to sue anyway - they just want this to all go away).
So your hostility towards Walsh doesn’t make much sense, but does jibe with the Pats’ effort to smear Walsh.

So far, Matt Walsh has not overexposed his 15 minutes of fame. He told the media what he knew, and now has faded back into obscurity. WHile I still suspect that he made a ‘deal’ with the NFL to stay quiet on the walkthru tape, he said enough to cause the NFL to do a further investigation of the other ‘50′ people that the NFL supposedly interviewed on Spygate. What did Ernie Adams have to say? What did #1 and #2 video assistants have to say? What did Scott Pioli know? This Spygate is far from over until the coverup is completely revealed.

Wow, FreeAgent IS full of crap! His main point is “there’s NO proff that Walsh DIDN’T tape the Rams walkthru so therefore if there’s no proof Florio’s spreading rumors”. What a complete PUTZ!! There also isn’t proof that Walsh DID tape the walkthru, so if there’s NO PROOF Freeagentidiot wants everyone to believe the Patriots DID tape the walk thru. So, NO PROOF means the Pats did it? Come on September!
What will end this entire mess? The Patriots winning the SuperBowl this year! That’s BB’s goal! When he wins a couple more with Tom and Randy and the rest of the boys! Maybe, just maybe some of the vitriol and hate will subside?
If I asked the question what was BB fined for? Half the posters here wouldn’t know! That’s been the issue with this story, supposition and incorrect information from reporters on TV and the print media! BB was fined for using a video camera to record signals(off. and def.)500K and a 1st round selection. The Patriots were fined 250K.
The “walkthrough Tape,” was an unsubstaciated rumor, written and reported by John Tomase of the Boston Herald. Result, a full page ad apology to the Patriots! The worse thing about it was when it was done! The day before the SuperBowl! Unforgivable!!! Tomase is “Deadman Walking,” around Foxboro. I can’t see him resuming his duties covering the Patriots! Who would trust him?
Matt Walsh, isn’t a hero in all of this. He has forever damaged his reputation over a get even mentality. What was he hoping to gain? Is there a book in his future? We don’t know, only Matt can answer that question. Would a hero of yours booby trap his bed, to keep his room mate from soiling his sheets? Well, Walsh did that and more! He stole several items from his employer and was fired for taping phone converstions of his employers. In his wedding photo’s and made up resume, there’s memorabilia laying everywhere!
Specter has behaived as a bully in the school yard! Abusing his authority on the over-sight committee. He has done everything within his power to userp Goodell’s authority as Commissioner!
Comcast and the NFL are in court as we speak, the NFL wants you to have the Network for free and Comcast doesn’t! We’re talking huge money here! Comcast is one of Specter’s largest campaign contributors and he has interest in holding this situation over Goodell’s head! Do you really think this is about the Eagles or Steeler’s? How about the millions of dollars Comcast would lose if, the NFLN was part ot the basic tier of cable companies?
ESPN has completely jumped the shark! First, Easterbrook! His rambling on articles that talk about space flight and other non-sense football fans don’t care about! Schlereth, Carter and Trey Wingo! Trying to convince anyone who would listen that the Pats broke down the tape at halftime. They went on and on, until Goodell stated that Walsh said “he had the tape in his possesion until after the game!” A fact they ignored and said that they didn’t buy Walsh’s explanation. I guess they liked thier version of the facts! If Tony Dungy told them we didn’t use the tape during the game, it would have been excepted as gospel!
Belichick misinterpretation is laughable to a degree! However, I think he was aware they were taping the coaches! The Commissioner went on the record stating that stealing signals is part of the game. Not an illegal act by itself! It was the use of the video camera. Why the excuses by Walsh? He knew he shouldn’t be taping the coaches, hence the excuses of, “I need this shot of the Kicker!” Walsh was in plain sight a fact that was demonstrated on one of the tapes!
Goodell destroying the evidence because the season will still going on and he didn’t want the tape to “get out.” I can’t explain why he felt that was the way to go. Remember he was being critized for the tape being leaked to Fox! Fox employs his wife Jane Skinner, maybe he just wanted the tapes gone! The security of the League’s Front Office is questionable to say the least?
Kraft is a great owner and is smart enough to leave the football decisions to the staff! He put his full trust in BB! Belichick has delivared with the best record in the NFL since taking over as Head Coach! 3 SB’s and the best play-off record in years! Now, everone wants Kraft to walk away from BB and he’s not that type of person! He’s loyal to his people and the type of owner that every one would like for thier team.
Finally, the Patriots! What this team has accomplished in a short period of time is really incredible! The Players on the field won those games! Yes, maybe they got a signal here and there. That doesn’t explain this teams sucess! Taping wristband footage is a waste of tape… Cheerleader’s? How did that tape help? Doesn’t evryone see when a D coach holds up 2 fingers? The point is that, had the teams used wristbands or just changed thier signals, this entire story would be moot! I hope you took notes, there will be a quiz later!

Selective reading? I said BB’s explanation was non-sense! He knew the “video taping was against the rules,” which is why Walsh said he knew it was wrong! Hence the canned excuses!
What you’re not getting here is that’s why the huge fine! BB tried to push the envelope! He got caught! Told the Commissioner he’d been taping since taking over in 2000. Why the Commissioner wasn’t upfront with that information is beyond me? It does explain the Mega-fine.
You saw yourself what was on the tapes, or else you probably wouldn’t comment on a story your not familiar with? Cheerleaders and wristbands! Personel groupings, 2 fingers, 4 fingers cover2, I know what going on just from watching the game! Are you telling me that they gleaned info. from those tapes that would have made a game changing difference? Not from what I saw! Although I did enjoy watching the Cheerleaders!
You don’t know how BB thinks, knowledge is power! Why not look at the tape and see if any trends in thier signals? Stealing signals is Legal! I’ll say it again, stealing signals is legal! Video taping isn’t! You can steal signals all day long! Does it help? It can’t hurt! It is a time consuming effort! The tape has to be edited. Synced with the game. The tape would be the same length as the game! The full tape would take 3,4 hours to break down! Additional time to figure out which coach was the decoy and which coach was live! The information could be used in the NEXT meeting with that opponent!
Your team does the same thing, differintly. The steal signals, they just didn’t tape them!(as far as we know)The Jet’s weren’t investigated even though Walsh said they were taping too! Most teams advance scout, they’ll go watch the previous opponent and see what they can pick up! Everybody steals signals. It’s completely legal and it would be incompetence not to scout!
I will not defend the video taping, it’s clear it was illegal! What I will defend is my position that this doesn’t rise to the level of cheating. I view it as advanced scouting, with a twist! I just don’t think it’s as big of an advantage that some make it out to be! Did it help? Probably picked up a signal here and there, but to say that’s why they won so many games is non-sense!
I guess asking for a little common sense is asking to much? Haphazardly? Is that a word? Anyway, BB did break the rules and did use a video camera to tape signals. He was fined “Bigtime,” and his reputation is damaged as the premier head coach in the NFL!
All this other stuff, IR players practicing, Scalping SB tickets! Is an attempt to keep the feeding frenzy going! I have never seen a story so hyped and targeted as this one!(maybe the Duke Lacroos team) I mean I can’t believe the hate! Some of you won’t be happy until BB is executed! You want this story to completely ruin the Patriots and BB, some have even called for the Franchise to be dis-banded! In the previous years prior to 2006, alot of teams were at it! When the clarification memo was released in 2006. It was pretty clear that video taping of the Coaches was against the rules! Most teams stopped thier “video taping,” but, BB pushed the envelope! So weather you steal the signals with spyglasses from the booth, have the back up QB chart the calls! It’s the same thing! Except with the tape, you can’t use the information right away! You have to wait until it’s edited and organized.
Perspective…All teams steal signals! That’s part of the game! Low tech audio recorders and clipboards, binoculars and advance scouts. All coaches cover thier mouth, regardless of opponent! They know the signals are fair game! To my surprise, I see that alot of posters here really don’t know the rules of the game! What’s legal and what isn’t, but you know enough to call for BB’s head! Rightious!
