Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler’s toughness or desire can never be questioned, not after he fought through a 2007 season during which he lost 35 pounds while a staff of Dr. Nick Rivieras was checking his drinking water for traces of Slim-Fast.
And now that Cutler and everyone else knows that he suffers from diabetes, he is in a position to become the unquestioned leader of the team, in only his third season.
“Guys look at Jay and the way he’s handled things and their problems don’t seem half as bad,” cornerback Champ Bailey said. “I’m amazed at the way he’s handled it. I thought he’d be freaking out right now. But he hasn’t shown one sign of emotion.
“He hasn’t missed a workout. Jay’s a natural leader. He gets it.”
Cutler is wearing during practices a wireless insulin pump to regulate his blood sugar. And he doesn’t feel sorry for himself, at all.
“A lot of kids get diagnosed each day who are under eight,” Cutler said. “I can’t imagine their parents having to wake their three-year-old up three times a night to prick their finger to check their blood sugar level. When I get things settled, I want to do something to help raise awareness, especially with kids.”

He’ll “take command” when they start winning, which they didn’t do last year.

That’s pretty high praise coming from Champ Bailey. Glad to see that his problem was finally diagnosed and he’s doing well. The medical staff better keep a syringe loaded with insulin just in case. My neighbor wears an insulin pump and it’s not as small as one would think.

I never understood the knock against Cutler coming out of college. Anything you need to know about how much courage he has you learn from the fact that he was the quarterback at Vanderbilt. He faced the teeth of one of the most talented leagues in the country without a single NFL prospect around him and excelled. How other quarterbacks were picked ahead of him still mystifies me. But then I guess those people were the ones who would have picked Ryan Leaf over Peyton Manning too.
On a side note, I hope all the Denver Bronco players all go to their own private doctor to get a workup done. Lord knows what the quacks that missed the signs of poor health have missed on other players on the team.

The Broncos didn’t win last year because they had the 30th rated defense and a trifecta from hell at running back- Young, Henry and Hall. This is his team, epecially with the way he has handled this adversity.

Funny Jay gets the nod as being a Role Model. If I remember correctly he was grabbing his crotch at some San Diego players not long before CBS caught Rivers and co. got pissed at him. Cutler hasn’t won anything, and I don’t see him winning this year either.

i hope he found a new group of quacks to treat his
diabetes.
what a sad day when he found out that he had diabetes,
with all the athletic programs he participated in,you
would think at one time or another someone would have
tested him for diabetes.the test is nothing but a pin
prick.
florio,a serious question,is there any basis for a
malpractice suit in this case?

This is not news. Anybody who knows anything about Cutler knows that he is a class act, a natural leader, and an incredible QB. Give this (now very young) team a year or two with JC at the helm and the sky’s the limit. I encourage anybody who has not seen him play and who has not seen how he handles himself to please take note the next chance you get. Crotch-grabbin’??? Sorry, but Cutler>Rivers in just about everything that really matters.

not to sound too harsh about Jay Cutler, but cry me a frickin river. Millions of people are diagnosed around the world every year with diabetes, but whereas Cutler has more money than he can ever spend and a (supposedly) solid group of medical professionals around him, many around the world struggle to get proper treatment and struggle to afford insulin needles.
I’d like to point out there have been many successful athletes with diabetes in the past (incl. 6x olympic gold medalist steve redgrave), and once Jay gets this under control, he’ll be fine, however, he may still suck as a QB and will have nothing to blame.
the Broncos medical staff should definitely be fired though…

tee tee, Jay Cutler is not crying anyone a river, in fact hes doing just the opposite. Hes dealing with it and not making a big deal about it, and is attempting to deflect what little attention this has brought him towards helping others.
Furthermore, he doesnt “suck,” either. Cutler is not only the best QB from that draft class, he is probably in the top half of QBs in the league right now and has the potential to be top 10 or even higher. Plus hes a leader and a class act.
I just dont see where people get off ripping Cutler.

DSDolphin, if you read it properly.. i never said Jay was crying a river, i just don’t think other people should be making such an enormous deal over it - “jay’s such a class act” etc. I have diabetes, and yet, as do so many people, i get on with my life, take insulin 6times a day and avoid high sugar foods. Its a real easy condition to treat and Cutler will be fine - i hope he uses his position of fame to help out those i referenced above who can’t afford to treat their condition and develop severe diabetic complications.
oh, and he’s better than VY and Leinhart??? surely you jest…
thanks for rating my post man..
