One thing I’ve learned through 17 years of experience with the justice system is that the outcome of any matter entrusted to it can’t be predicted with certainty. There are too many variables, too much subjectivity, too much random crap that can happen.
And so Saints defensive end Charles Grant would be wise not to thump his chest about the very serious charge of involuntary manslaughter that was lodged against him last week. Grant has been indicted, which means that at a minimum prosecutors have convinced a grand jury that there’s probable cause to believe that Grant is legally responsible for the death of the woman who was in the wrong place at the wrong time as Grant and others were involved in a brawl.
“I told the truth,” Grant said recently. “The truth will set you free. That’s nothing that worries me. I’m going to hold my head the highest a head can be held.”
But Grant did more than proclaim his innocence. He rambled on and on, at times making lots of sense and at others making none.
“I worked 29 years to get to where I’m at; at 29 years old, that came with a lot of ups and downs. I have a lot of stuff that has been on my shoulders. Like I said before, I’m a warrior. Warriors are born. Some people, you have to turn them into that. I stand for something. . . .
“I won’t hide. I won’t shutter in a cave, because sometimes that’s what people want you to do, shutter yourself. I’m a grown man. If I would have done anything down on Church Street that night of the incident Feb. 2, I’d have claimed it. I’m a grown man. I’d have claimed my responsibility in any situation. And that night, I was a guy who got attacked.
“Now I’m turned into the guy who did this or did that. But my lawyers are handling it. They’re great lawyers. My prayers go out to the family and the people who have to go through this, and I just can’t wait until it’s over.
“I went to one club, and I’ve been going to this club for years. I know the owner very well. It’s not like people look at it, as a guy has a certain amount of money and he can’t go out? I’ve been going out my whole life. You tell me I can’t? This is America. That’s why they have freedom of speech, rights. That’s what we stand for as people. That’s what people before me have fought for. This is a situation not only for me; this is a situation for every guy who stands in the NFL who has accomplished goals. You’re going to tell those guys you have to stay shuttered in the house because you achieved such greatness; you’re not able to do this, you’re not able to that? I think that’s wrong. . . .
“There are 2,000 guys in this league I’m in. Every time one guy in this league [gets in trouble], he’s always the guy to get humiliated. But this is where you stand for something. Everybody has to stand for something. Rosa Parks, when she got on the bus, she stood for something. So in this situation, it’s not a race situation. I’m not mad about any of this that’s going on.”
Um we’re really not sure what to say.

This reminds me a lot of the Kwame Kilpatrick speech (the mayore of Detroit). He made great points for about 75% then ruined the entire relevance by finishing it off with racial remarks.
He had me up until the Rosa Parks comment. Not sure what to make of it now.

The Rosa Parks comment is exactly the point that he won me over. As I understand it now. Grant is just like Rosa Parks. Without a race issue. And without a bus. But otherwise — exactly like Rosa Parks.
And Rosa Parks is a warrior.

power to the people. Grant is stepping up, this is 2008, a grown man is free do whatever he wants. Also if you don’t speak up for yourself and stand up for what you believe in, then who will do it for you? In this world the only person you can trust is yourself and you must always stand up for yourself, What I’ve learned is that there always a bunch of malicious evil people that will do whatever it takes to bring you down.

What the hell is he talking about. He makes NO sense to me. He was better off saying” No Comment” It seems as if everytime you let a football player speak, he makes himself seem really….dumb. Sometimes silence speaks the loudest.

I wonder what this guy (and others like him) actually learn in college? By that I mean they (usually) attend for four years. They supposedly take classes that will supposedly make them better educated (Yes, that is a lot of supposition).
Then they earn tons of money that is not in any way associated with being college educated, only to behave and speak like they do not have one ounce of common sense.
Amazing…truly amazing!

As a lawyer, Florio should know the old saying that you can get a grand jury to indict a ham sandwich. There is no defense present, and the jury only hears what the prosecutor tells them. How often could you win that argument?
Just because he name-drops Rosa P., that doesn’t make him guilty - it just makes him a moron.

TRanslation: I went out to a club, and I was attacked. I defended myself.
Some say that I should not go out to clubs, and put myself in that kind of situation. To that I say that this was a club that I frequent often, and I know the owner well. To say that I should not go out to clubs, based on who I am, because it would make me a target, I say that this kind of thinking is wrong. Are we not free to go out in this country and enjoy ourselves? Do I not still have the right to go out? Or does the fact that I make lots of money and fame for playing a game somehow mean that I must confine myself to my house?
I understand what he is saying, but he ALSO must realize that who is is MAKES him a target. The money and fame makes him a target of all kinds of lowlife. This could come in the form of old lowlife friends looking for a free ride, to criminals looking to rob him, to schisters trying to get money. He must realize that fame and fortune makes him a target, and if he were SMART, he would avoid places where these types are in higher concentrations. You can’t have your cake and eat it too, not even in America.

It’s always annoyed me when pros identify themselves as ‘warriors’ or “going to battle.” You’re not a warrior, you’re a football player playing a game. A great game but just the same. Keep it in context.

Sometimes, you have to look at MEANINGS rather than literal words play. You people obsess over the stupidest things, which in my eyes, makes you just as much a moron as anyone else. Its 2008, don’t you know the world is full of all sorts of different people/cultures/personalities???
Since when did a bunch of blogger commenting football “fans” become filled with such perfect ability to judge others based on a 3rd person scripting? The fact that you all seem to agree with this flawed logic is really the part i find most “moronic” and just plain sad really.
Take your own advices, and “be quiet to keep your doubt in tact” because it is glaringly obvious you guys have some mental issues, judging by your comments and conclusions.

Girls, girls, calm down! I swear to God east69st and vincelombardi, you’d think that I personally pissed in your teams’ gatorade coolers! I already gave the scoop on Grant on another blog. He struggled with his cousin to keep him from shooting somebody and the gun went off, hitting the pregnant woman. I don’t know if that equals manslaughter, but it’s not looking too good.
