Ray Edwards says that he plans to breaking the single-season sack record, currently held by Giants defensive end Michael Strahan.
All together now: “Who in the hell is Ray Edwards?”
Edwards is a defensive end with the Vikings, the fourth member of a neo-Purple People Eaters line featuring Pro Bowlers Jared Allen, Pat Williams, and Kevin Williams.
After being suspended four games in 2007 for violation of the league’s policy against anabolic steroids and related substances, Edwards has dedicated himself to becoming the best he can be.
“I look up to Strahan,” Edwards recently told KSTP-TV in Minnesota. ”I learned a lot from him watching and studying his film.
“This year I definitely plan on going out here and breaking Strahan’s record of 22 and 1/2 sacks this year.”
On the surface, Edwards’ claim is ludicrous. But given that he’s certain to face favorable matchups as offensive lines obsess over stopping Allen and the Williamses, Edwards will have more than a fair opportunity to make an impact.
To get there, he has taken up boxing, and he worked out nearly every day during the offseason. He’ll move to the left side of the defensive line, where he’ll face right tackles — just as Strahan has done.
Hey, Edwards probably won’t reach his goal. But at least he’s aiming high.

Too bad Favre won’t be around to lay down and give him the record…

Thats a lofty goal. Lets try getting a Viking to double digits in sacks before we start thinking about 20 of them

“I learned a lot from him watching and studying his film.”
And Strahan has said he learned a lot from watching COURTNEY BROWNS on film.

As a Viking fan I hope he is right, and he should have more opprotunity, as teams will probably be focused on the other 3 members of that defensive line. I am hopeful that it all plays out for the VIKINGS this season, and they all remain injury free. Good Luck Mr. Edwards.

I saw this headline and thought, “what team does Kalimba Edwards play for now anyway?” Then I read on and it got even worse…

Starhan got that record when Brett laid down for him. Collusion. hmmm is that considered “cheating”? Tale away both GB and the Giants 1st round picks and fine the coaches $500K and the teams $250K.

I have the Vikes as my sleeper team this year.
Depending on how well the QB plays this year, I think the Vikes could go very far into the playoffs.
They have a hell of a defense and arguably one of the best backfields in the game.
I wouldnt be surprised at all to see the Vikes come January.

Actually, the numbers are high, and he won’t make it. But Edwards having a breakout year is not out of the question at all. When he came out of Purdue, Edwards was considerd to be an extremely talented end who had underachieved at Purdue, but was considered as good as Roosevelt Colvin and Shaun Philips, but left early as a underachiever due to conflicts with the coaches. In the pros, he has apparently re-focused and worked like a dog to get to a big contract year. Last year he led the team in sacks with 5 despite having little help, and missing 4 games due to an illegal supplement in a drug test. If Jared Allen and Kevin Williams benefit from being together, and Edwards has learned a bit more about pass rush moves like Umenyiora did last year, this could be a revelation.

Does Ray Edwards think he is going to play QB and get sacked 23 times? I think he is confused by the sack record

Probably took him longer to type it than it took Favre to lay down like a dog.

if Emmitt Smith can win dancing with the stars, and a Fat 400-pound black dude can win American Idol, then anything is possible. Who knows Ray Edwards could have a breakout season and rip the league apart.

Nah, I doubt it. Vikings fans have that programmed as a macro. Kind of like “Vicodin” or “Love Boat”.
