Jets defensive lineman Kris Jenkins, who admits that he once tipped the scales at more than 400 pounds, says that he’s now down to a svelte 360.
That’s 30 pounds lighter than his playing weight in 2007, with the Panthers.
“It is huge,” Jenkins said on Thursday regarding his partial drop in hugeness. “I’m getting to the point in my career now that every little bit helps, especially when you are getting the double teams off the end. Plus, it helps alleviate the pressure on my joints. I feel great. Doing what I have done now, I would not go back the other way.”
But the 30-pound reduction is still less than ten percent of his total body mass.
Jenkins also talked about the move from the 4-3 defense in Carolina to the 3-4 attack used by the Jets. “My whole career, except for my rookie year, I have always played a single-gap defense – just go up the field and disrupt,” Jenkins said. “Now it is fun. I love the challenge; now I have to be a stud. You have two gaps, you can’t let anybody block you: double teams, whams, everything you have to take it head on. . . . In the 3-4 defense I get to express myself a little bit more and show what I am capable of doing.”
It sure seems as if Jenkins has learned a lot about the contact aspects of the 3-4 defense during the non-contact offseason drills.

To think the Panthers wouldn’t budge from their demand for a first round pick from the Rams for this tool last year. Have fun with this guy Jets fans.

That’s kinda the whole point of OTA’s… Training. Going over the nuances of your position. Learning and knowing your assignments…

Just think of all the sacks Jenkins would get, if the opposing QB war a Big Mac around his neck.

Seriously Florio, if I read one more article about teams having contact during non-contact drills I’m going to puke. Why do you feel the need to mention this 12 times daily? If a team wants to risk injury with contact then that’s up to them! Why do you or any of the fans care?!
IT’S FOOTBALL FOR CRYING OUT LOUD THERE’S SUPPOSED TO BE CONTACT!!!!!

no worries filbert. remember you are posting on a jets article. if any of us jets fans had any brains, we’d have bolted a long time ago for another team. Like, one that doesn’t suck.

I still say it would have made more sense to keep the 4-3. By switching to the 3-4 Mangini put some of their best players on defense into a system that didn’t fit them and now he’s taking players from other teams that have only played in a 4-3 and expecting them to succeed in a 3-4. What?
This is simply the case of a coach thinking he’s smarter than what he is. Look at what they’re doing in Pittsburgh their coach has never run the 3-4 before (I believe he’s mainly been 4-3 and Tampa 2) but what system are they running? The 3-4 because it fits the players they have.

Mr. Florio, it gets to be annoying when you cling to random issues like non-contact drills. Kinda like your Seinfeld references.
“It sure seems as if Jenkins has learned a lot about the contact aspects of the 3-4 defense during the non-contact offseason drills.”
I know the same thing that Kris Jenkins said about playing NT in a 3-4 and I’ve never even put on shoulder pads. Maybe he did or maybe he didn’t participate in what you suggest, but this is a huge stretch if that article is the entire basis for assuming that the Jets are engaging in drills with contact.
I mean, isn’t a player’s responsibilities on defense EXACTLY the kind of thing that could be taught without contact?

Jenkins couldn’t stop the run with 3 other guys on the line, how is he gonna fill more space with only 2. But, he will be better with that weight off. He just couldn’t move his feet last year in Carolina. Reminds me of Sean Gilbert, or the fat guy piling on after the play in the Burger King commercial.

This reminds me of what Mr. Burns said to Homer Simpson after Homer was celebrating losing a few pounds, “Let me get this straight. You’re PLEASED with your appearance?”
Let me get this straight. You’re PLEASED to weigh ONLY 360??
