The Green Bay Packers have announced that receiver Bill Schroeder has retired as a member of the team.
Okay, so who is Bill Schroeder?
We barely remembered him. He last played in 2004. He spent five seasons with the Packers, from 1997 through 2001. He played for the Lions in 2002 and 2003, and the Bucs in 2004.
Surely, there’s a reason for Schroeder making this move three full seasons after last playing in the NFL. When we figure out what it is, we’ll let you know.
[UPDATE: Thanks to some sleuthing from our own Taco Bill, the move might have something to do with Schroeder’s plan for world domination.]

He’s from Wisconsin if that helps. I think he’s from Sheboygan and went to school at Division III LaCrosse which won a few championships.

Wouldn’t that be like me retiring as a Packer?

He’s a fan favorite from Favre’s glory years. That’s probably why.

Brett Farve hated Bill Schroeder. He didn’t feel like Schroeder fought for the ball enough and casued a few int’s. That’s why he left for DET. I guess Farve thought he could have ended his craeer with only 100,000 ints insted of 100,005 ints

I guess we shouldn’t expect Farve’s retirement paperwork anytime soon.
Does that mean 3 more years wondering if he’ll come back? Please no!

During a 3 year span from 99-01 he had 193 rec for 2968 yrds (avg 15.4 yrds/rec) and 18 TDs.
Not too bad for a 6th rounder from a D-III school.

Bill Schroeder was terrible. He wouldn’t catch balls over the middle, he ran out of bounds as much as possible, he was also a big fan of the catch and fall without getting tackled. Very obvious he hated contact. Probably also the biggest whiny biatch the packers have ever had at WR (that includes Javon Walker). I don’t think I’ve ever seen a packer receiver cry for pass interference more often than Schroeder.

It’s the end of an era in the NFL. I remember watching him dominate games and just completely take them over. I remember one game where he had 2 catches. Both were for positive yards, too.
My fantasy football team just took a major hit. He was my starting wide receiver in the 108 team league that I’m in.
I guess I’ll just start watching bowling on Sundays.

Now Aaron Rodgers has to deal with Bill Schroeder retiring! This pressure on him must really be getting intense.

I guess anyone can retire from the packers. He was terrible. He spent more time bitching for pass interference, than he did catching passes. When he did, he’d run out of bounds, or do the quick catch and fall to avoid contact, and definitely wouldn’t catch a pass over the middle. When I picture him in a packer uniform, I see him with a cry-baby look on his face (similar to Danny Ainge), with his hands up in the air begging the official for interference.

Bill Schroeder was terrible. He was one of Millen’s many horrible free agents signgs. Schroeder and Az Hakim were supposed to be the wideouts for the future for the Lions.
Wheee!

If I remember correctly, the real reason Shroeder left for Detroit is that the real wizard of a GM in Detroit signed him to a deal that averaged $5 million a season, around the same time as they signed Az Hakim to a similar type deal. Gotta love Matt Millen!

Bill Schroeder was always in Holgrens doghouse. I don’t think I ever saw a punt returner run backwards more than him. He was great for the opposing teams’ punters. Why he’d want to retire as a Packer is anyone’s guess. Someone mentioned he’s from Sheboygan and went to school in La Crosse. That’s probably the most likely reason. Someone mentioned he was a fan favorite. Not true. Is it possible though that he was hated less in Green Bay than in Detroit or Tampa. For shits and giggles, he should retire as a Seahawk.

I can assure you Packer fans know who he is. No matter how many balls he didn’t fight for he will always be a favorite of mine because he went to school in my hometown and beat the odds to play for the Pack.

I believe he was well liked by the local, ie Green Bay based fans, as a local boy made good.
This admiration wasn’t repeated in out of state fans, and it was said Favre disliked him as the local angle to his popularity was something Favre couldn’t emulate.
And that might explain why he retires as a Packer now, when Favre’s no longer around to object.

But Don Beebe was a quality dude.

I had a class with him at UW-LaCrosse many years ago. He, like all the football players on that campus, acted like a complete jagoff at all times. Which is understood, because he was part of a Division III national power and therefore more important than everyone else.

Is this the same Bill Schroeder that caught for the Brewers?
If not, maybe he could retire as a Brewer and it’s Bill Frickin’ Schroeder Day in Cheeseheadland.

A bit of history, “geniuses”. 1994 draft he was the 26th WR taken, from a Div. III school. He had a better (longer, more productive) career than all but 5 of the top 6 chosen (Isaac Bruce, Johnnie Morton, Derek Alexander, Darnay Scott and Charles Johnson). That’s pretty good company, don’t you think? 304 receptions, for 4,583 yards over 10 years. Solid, not spectacular career. How many of you lasted even 2 yrs. in the NFL? (I’m not hearing anything…, still waiting…) thought so.

guy doesn’t post two straight seasons back-to-back by being terrible. Schroeder was a decent player with good size and very good playing speed. He was not a great route runner nor ball athlete. How can somebody say they don’t remember him? White WRs aren’t easy to forget, kind of like black kickers… asian LBs… okay may be they aren’t that uncommon (McCaffrey, Furrey, Welker, Curtis, and many more) but they still aren’t a dime-a-dozen.

Isnt Schroeder the guy Millen took flak about for that radio thing? Millen said something like, “we have a guy who in practice is all world but come sunday is afraid to get hit” or something to that effect?

Every negative aspect of his game has been well documented by previous posters. You had to live here in Wisconsin to truly admire his flaws. His two biggest negatives were failing to fight for the ball and his penchant for avoiding contact at all costs, including falling out of bounds instead of fighting for a few more yards. If I were the Packers, I would refuse to let him retire as one. First class wuss on top of it, always crying for pass interference.
