Here we go again. More predictions of the Seahawks demise. Again, and again and again and as usual misplaced by Mr Florio (#2 in the East Coast Bias World next to Peter King. If it wastn't so funny, someone might take him serious.

Seattle might very well not improve this year and who knows, but I'll tell you what, if you think that SanFrancisco, starting a pathetic 3rd stringer at quarterback, or Arizona with every single good player demanding a trade or a new contract, or maybe you are dreaming that the worst team in football, ST. Louis, can bring back the "greatest show on turf" and somehow win a 10 more games then last year --- I can't stop laughing enough right now. SOMEONE from the NFC West will be the playoffs next year and the Seahawks are the team. It won't be close. They are 10000% better off without Shaun. He WAS the problem last year and they still won the division by 2 + games.

Mike, read your own blog some day and you will see the light.

Well the Steelers didn’t have the number 1 defense, that would be the Colts. Steelers were second, but also tied for last in Int’s, and they were in the middle of the pack in sacks. Don’t forget that #1 defense, gave up 29 points to the Jags, 31 to Denver, 28 to Cleveland, 19 to Jets(losing to the jets is a embarrassment), lost 34-13 to the Pats, gave up another 32 to the Jags, 24 to the Rams, and than 27 to the ravens…the ravens. This was a team that at one point was 7-2…they finished 10-6…do the math yourself this team played like crap down the stretch. "

Steelers did have the number 1 defense based on yards given up. You're basing it on points. Points scored can also come from something called special teams.

28 to Cleveland- A top ranked offense was manhandled. 14 points due to Joshua Cribbs...thats special teams budd.
34 to Pats- The #1 offense in the league. Please. Giants gave up more to them during the season. Guess their defense was bad too
19 to Jets- yeah 19 points...this one was the DEFENSE's fault...???
32 to Jags- Another blunder on special teams after marching down the field to score first. Then the refs decided to take away points from us (invisible hold by Mahan on a 2 pt conversion) and add points to their score (James Harrison and Polamalu being raped on Garrard's 30-yd run)

Anyways as much as I like making people feel stupid, what was your point in that? You're trying to tell me that any other team in the division has a better defense? Bengals? Browns? lmao. Do the math.

Florio, honestly I honestly think its too soon to start looking
at trends because re-alignment (of divisions) added a new
factor to the post-season equation. Instead of three division
winners you now have four, leaving one less non-division winner
in the playoffs.

Insomniac,
Those look like good picks. Swap out Arizona for Washington though. Zorn looks to be the right coach to help Campbell become a better QB, and I think that team has a lot of talent anyway.

ACDC84: If Jackson struggles and is the one reason for non-success in Minnesota, I'm sure they will have no problem putting in Frerotte who is more than capable of managing the team. I don't see the Packers not making it to the playoffs, however, but I still see Minnesota winning that division ala the way the Bears did it for two years without a QB, a tough D, and a solid running game.

Oh and as for the Steelers LB's "getting older". Do the names Lamaar Woodley, Lawrence Timmons, and Bruce Davis mean anything to you? Not to mention that Silverback (James Harrison) is only going into his 4th season. We're just fine at LB. All the op O-lineman were off the board in first round, which is why Mendy was the 1st round pick not to metnion the fact that FWP had way too many carries last year. We had a need at WR so we took Sweed in the 2nd, also because all the top OL guys were off the board. The Steelers aren't going to pass on top players remaining on the board to reach for O-lineman in the early rounds that don't deserve to be first day picks. There will be some shifting around on the O-line with Hartwig in the mix. Faneca was grossly overpaid by the NYJ. Don't you worry, we'll handle our issues in the trenches next draft.

You might've also noticed that we drafted a safety to bring some youth into the secondary and we have a young Anthony Smith who will hopefully develop into a better (and smarter) player. Jenkins out of USF is over-rated and most certainly NOT the better pick at #23 than Raashard Mendenhall.

All this is just speculation. Obviously, none of us knows for sure until the season is played. A couple of key injuries to star players and ANY team could have a losing season. The one point I did find interesting is, Florio says the Giants won't make it because after their other Super Bowl wins, they struggled. That's true. But, if he's going to use the past as his guideline, then why is he NOT favoring the Redskins? The Skins won the Super Bowl each year after the Giants did. If the past is your guideline Florio, then, by YOUR reasoning, the Skins are the team to beat.

kellyb9 says:

"@cantgetenough - It depends, do you think Eli is the real deal or not. He has shown that he can be a good QB in the league, but he has also shown that he can still be inconsistant. Not to take anyhting away from the Giants, but they got on a roll at the right time. Anyone with half a brain can see that. Honestly, most teams who win the super bowl fall right into that category. This should be a big year for Eli and I think he still has a lot to prove. Dallas improves dramatically if they can get Pacman on the field, and I think the Eagles and Redskins have taken a few steps forward. It’s a tough division I think thats all the previous poster was getting at. I, for one, wouldn’t be too suprised to see any one of those teams in the playoffs."

I think Eli is the real deal. I've seen glimpses of what he showed through the latest playoffs in past years. Consistency is key, and I am anxious as all get out to see how he plays this season. But when I think about this line-up of names I can't help but get excited.

Burress, Toomer, Smith, Tyree, Manningham
Jacobs, Bradshaw, Ward
Shockey, Boss

Half of those guys spent considerable time injured last year. Imagine if they are all healthy?

As a previous poster said, as a Packer fan I disagree that drafting Brohm with the 56th pick says we are not confident in Rodgers. If we drafted him at 30, maybe, but not 56. We drafted him because the only QBs on the roster at the time other than Rodgers were practice squad guys that will never wear a uniform on Sundays. We drafted Brohm because we needed another QB on the roster that could step in when Rodgers misses some time. That is all. We had no interest in the crappy lot of veterans like Holcomb, Frerotte, Culpepper, etc. Now IF Rodgers is a total bust in the next year and a half, we have another talented guy to step in and produce. And if Rodgers is the real deal like we think he is, than we have some future trade bait. I just don't see how drafting a guy in order to have two QBs on the active roster sends Rodgers a message.

And why is everyone looking closely at us drafting ANOTHER QB in the draft?? Remember, he's a SEVENTH ROUND PICK. Let's not make it something its not.

As a Packer fan I'm not upset at the lack of respect, but I tend to disagree. I do agree that the Packers would be a logical choice to make this list of six, as losing a legendary QB will let the team down. But there was more to the team than Favre. Besides our starting CBs and OTs, we are an extremely young team that should improve. Most importantly, I am not sold on Minnesota, the sxey pick of the decade. Awesome D-line, yes. Best RB in the game? He's got my vote. The QB is going to be their achiles heal, and I don't think he will hold up. We demonstrated twice last year that is you stack the line and are able to contain AD and make Jackson beat you throwing, he can't. If Jackson has a great, break-through year, the Vikings will be extremely good, but I don't see that happening.

Well every year, all the "experts" predict the downfall of the Seahawks, and every year, they are wrong. Every year they think that somehow the Arizona Cardinals and the 49ers are the team to beat and are going to have a break out year, and everyone keeps saying that until that critical moment when *gasp* they actually start playing games.

As long as the Seahawks have a semi healthy Matt Hasselbeck, they will contend for the playoffs every year.

And I anticipate another banner season for the Steelers.

The only risky thing I thought about this article was taking two teams from the NFC East not to make the playoffs. Sure, it makes sense that the Eagles and Cowboys could go 1-2 in that division, but I find it hard to believe that the team that finishes higher: Giants or Redskins, won't make the playoffs.

In the AFC North, the smart money has to be on the Bengals. They may not ever get a pass defense, but it's hard to see them being as bad as last year in that respect, and Chad or no Chad...Carson Palmer is still the best QB in that division.

I thought it was a good article, and I'm just waiting to see who Florio picks to make the playoffs--so I can rip him for taking the Browns. ;)

Rogers played very well against Dallas lasty year. Brohm wasn't at all drafted because of any uncertainty. They need depth at that position. Nothing more. There will no QB controversey in Green Bay. And let's stop acting like Favre is irreplacable. He was pretty average the 2nd half of his career. And it was typical Favre in that playoff OT where he threw his team's chances away on a HORRIBLE pick. Rogers played better than Favre when he stepped in against Dallas.

Keep talking Ravens fans, you only beat us last year because we started Charlie Batch, Najeh Davenport, and half our starting defense was out with injuries. Tell us all what happened to you guys on Monday night when we were healthy. Oh yeah I remember, Big Ben had 5 TD's and our defense made the Ravens offense look like it was a High School squad. Oh and I also remember Hines Ward giving both Ed Reed and Bart Scott snot bubbles from laying knockout blows on both of them. Now you guys are just a another year older with no considerable WR threats and a rook at QB. You guys will battle the clusterf*&k up in Cinci for last place in the division.

@cantgetenough - It depends, do you think Eli is the real deal or not. It's a tough division I think thats all the previous poster was getting at. I, for one, wouldn't be too suprised to see any one of those teams in the playoffs.

I strongly disagree with the Steelers being on this list. Seriously, who else in that division is going to step up? I assume you mean the Browns will win that division - and I think they are still very suspect.

Great article sharing your opinion of what could happen. Anyone with the ability to read will see this. If you're getting mad at an offseason article that isn't putting things in definites, then well, you're an idiot and you need to be mad at your parents for being siblings, not at Florio.

Of course the Squeelers won't make the playoffs. They suck, and barely made the playoffs last year. Great December they had. Then one and done in the playoffs.

Too bad Squeeler fans, maybe next decaded. Hey get an O-Line, would ya?

Interesting predictions and logic. I like the pick of the Green Bay Packers because of the uncertainty of the quarterback position. Still, I'd have to guess that the Packers will make the playoffs based on the dreadful NFC North. But who knows? Da Bears can pull a shocker.

I like you saying the Steelers won't make it, but not necessarily because of the team -- my belief is that the team is fringe-playoff worthy, but that is a daunting schedule they have. It can be like last year's Cleveland Browns -- having a team that is good enough but can easily get screwed over in the end.

I disagree with doubting the Seahawks. That team will play with fire in its belly, wanting to send out coach Holmgren on top. Despite the loss of Shaun Alexander, the team seems too talented (and in the NFC) not to make the playoffs. We shall see.

I'd say you got it pretty close. The fans that always seem to overestimate the talent of their teams is Pitt, GB, and Philly.

Packer fan is really delusional if it thinks Rodgers is going to just step right in for even an aging Favre.

I would think Steeler fans are treating you far more kindly than Giants fans, whose team is shining their Lombardi trophy on the gleaming forehead of Eli, buffing the same with the radiant Zenesque personality of the Colonel, and finally spit shining it with the various excrements of Osi. I doubt Giants fans will accept that their team will not be once again competing for the prize this season and several thereafter, given their young D, Strahan notwithstanding.

I thought the analysis was very good.

As a Vikings fan, I thought the Packers QB draft was very curious. If they really thought Rodgers was the answer they would have gotten depth with experienced QB's. Drafting a spread of QB's to complement Rodgers sure says they hope they have at least one out of the three.

It could be that they are worried about Rodgers injury potential. Lets face it, the Packers have led a charmed life having a QB that shows up every week for 17 years, and plays through injuries. Those days are over.

Right now I see all division champs repeating except tampa and pittsburgh. I also see the giants failing to make the playoffs.

into the breach step philly, saints, browns.

indy was injured a lot last year and still made it. i dont see the pats' and chargers' challengers getting there. i dont see the seahawks' or packers' challengers getting there this time. could see jax leapfrogging indy for division title.

Not sure about that best division in the league comment finishim. 7th easiest season based on strength on schedule. Not saying they don't have a sold team, just don't think they're in a position to repeat.

Hell yeah, keep the Steelers under the radar. I love that. Strength of schedule based upon last year's output means jack. You're going to see some big things with FWP and Mendy out of the backfield. We're healthy again on defense across the board. Special Teams is undergoing big changes in philosphy (just check Pittsburgh Post Gazette). Sweed will integrate nicely thanks to the tutelage of Hines Ward. The last time we saw Hines take a WR under his wing was Santonio Holmes, and he was decleateing people last year.......just like Hines does almost every game. O-line production remains to be seen but it has to be better than last year............and even if it's not that brings us to BIG BEN. Despite the atrocious O-line play last year he still finished just behind Tom Brady and broke several Bradshaw passing records. Ben can do it all in AND out of the pocket if necessary. Can't say that for most other QB's in the league.

The Ravens and Bungles won't do jack this year. The Browns will crumble under the pressure of 5 primetime games. The Steelers will repeat as division champs.

Oh and Florio, you might want to consider the fact that Big Ben was nearly killed in a motorcycle accident just before the season after Super Bowl XL and then had apendectomoy surgery after the season started. He was WAY below the weather that year and it showed. And last year's performance proved he's back better than ever and that he is no fluke.

Keep the Steelers under the radar. We love that, and so so they.

JKennedy's "genius" insight aside -- for example, what team was playing its second string against the Ravens that last game, and what was the score of the first Balt-Steelers game? -- any objective Steelers fan will tell you this could be a tough year. The schedule is the toughest I've ever seen. And yes, there were some defensive breakdowns, where the "#1" unit couldn't hold leads and ruined some great Big Ben comebacks.

On the other hand, everybody's trendy pick, Cleveland, flopped down the stretch led by Derek "Fader" Anderson. Behind him is Brady "Big Game Choker" Quinn. Cincy has no D, and Palmer tends to disappear in big games vs. playoff-caliber teams. Baltimore doesn't even have a QB,
and we'll see if boot-foot Flacco is the answer. So you tell me.

Well the Steelers didn't have the number 1 defense, that would be the Colts. Steelers were second, but also tied for last in Int's, and they were in the middle of the pack in sacks. Don't forget that #1 defense, gave up 29 points to the Jags, 31 to Denver, 28 to Cleveland, 19 to Jets(losing to the jets is a embarrassment), lost 34-13 to the Pats, gave up another 32 to the Jags, 24 to the Rams, and than 27 to the ravens...the ravens. This was a team that at one point was 7-2...they finished 10-6...do the math yourself this team played like crap down the stretch.

DonalMurphy, have you checked the packers schedule last year before your post? they beat (in order) new york, san diego, washington.. all playoff teams, and you called their schedule weak when they played supposively the best division in the league and came up a game short of the 4 game sweep not to mention they only lost to two teams during the regular season.

Bengals or the Steelers in the AFC North. Cleveland was a fluke last year. I would say its probably going to be the Steelers eventhough I am a Bengals fan. Too many inside problems for the Bengals. Chad sucks!

They drafted Brohm because he was by far the highest rated player left on the board, not because they don't think Rodgers is the answer. If they were worried about Rodgers they would have drafted Brohm at no.30 not 56.

I am curious as to how Steeler's fans justify their opinions of the AFC North. Assuming of course that Nostra-Florio is correct in that the Steelers are going backwards, who will be the team?
Baltimore has an older, yet very solid defense. Although they have big question marks on offense.
Cinci has a very potent offense (if they can get all their knuckleheads on the field). Although they have question marks on defense.
The Browns won 10 games last year with a very good offense & special teams, but had a very bad (run) defense. As a result, they resign all key FA's, and immediately upgraded their big weakness (run defense) with the signings of Rogers, and Williams. From an unbiased football perspective, what exactly did the Browns do to be considered "over-rated", or a "fraud" or "exposed"?? And before anyone chimes in with the "Rogers is high risk & lazy" points, you may want to take a read of Jim Wexall's recent interview with your own Casey Hampton. I believe Hampton calls Rogers "the best in the league" and concedes "it's going to be ugly this year".

Anyway, I am willing to bet that one of the teams that makes Nostra-Florio's list of "who will make it to the post-season" will be the previously mentioned Cleveland Browns.

"The defensive line received no real upgrade despite the team's desire to do so, and the LINEBACKERS and defensive backs are getting older but not necessarily better."

Yeah guys, our linebackers are getting old and worse. I mean look at James Harrison. His play is getting real sloppy...getting to the Pro Bowl his first season starting over Joey Porter. Not to mention Timmons and Woodley...man they're going to be 23 this upcoming season.

Its not just the LBs though...its the whole defense. I mean come on. We went from a top 10 defense in 2006 to the number 1 defense in 2007 even with our injury plagued Aaron Smith, Ryan Clark and Troy Polamalu.

Please PFT.

florio, you don't give Steelers fans enough credit. sure, there are a few goofball fans in every town, but most Steeler fans are pretty realistic. most of us know (1) our OL was our achilles heel last year, and it's likely going to be worse this year, (2) it's a Pittsburgh tradition started by Bill Cowher to have bad special teams, (3) we have other issues like DL depth, tough schedule, etc. Bottom line, Steelers fans won't give you grief about this article, we know our best chance of making the playoffs is simply because our division is mediocre right now.

Gigantic Steelers fan...I can't argue with your logic, and any rational fan will agree with me.

But, Walrus made a good point; someone from that division has to go to the playoffs, and I didn't see enough consistency from Derek Anderson to nudge the champs off their divisional throne. To go along with your recent history thought process, no team has won back-to-back AFC North titles (AFC Central not included).

Arguments can be made on both sides. It's a good column

I think the steelers are going to surprise some people and themselves. Marvel is going to be healthier than he was at the end of the year, Chris K should be ok, Simmons is Solid, Colon is Average. The biggest difference should be Hartwig, not because I think he is going to blow people right off the line of scrimmage, but hopefully he is a bit smarter than Mahan and will call the assignments better and not misread his own. The other part of the O line is run blocking has never been a problem, and hopefully Mendenhall/Sweed lessen teams desire to blitz.

Defensively the only thing to worry about is one of the end's going down to injury. I think the Polamalu/Clark combo should be back and I'm looking forward to seeing Woodley/Harrison pressuring and Bruce Davis situationally.

My prediction is 10-6 after slugging through a tough schedule and a first round playoff win.

Defensively the only thing to worry about is one of the end’s going down to injury. I think the Polamalu/Clark combo should be back and I’m looking forward to seeing Woodley/Harrison pressuring and Bruce Davis situationally.

My prediction is 10-6 after slugging through a tough schedule and a first round playoff win.

The theory that Brohm was drafted because the Packers don't feel that Rodgers is the answer is flawed. They had to either pick up a has-been veteran or a new guy because either way they need some depth at that position.

Seems simple to me. Steeler's have the toughest schedule I've ever seen, bar none. But someone from the AFCN will make the playoffs. The Brown's are overrated and the Steeler's line is a big question. Could go either way but I'd bet on the Steeler's pull through.

Green Bay played one of the weakest schedules last year. Luckily Favre is gone because against their two legitimate opponents (Cowboys and Giants) he looked just terrible. They've got lots of talented youth but just can't see them making the cut this year.

So from the NFC you are saying that the only two returning playoff teams are the YUCS & COWGIRLS?? Wow this is very surprising to me! North(Minn, Chi, Det) will be in as division winner & West(SF, Ari, Stl)!! Those two division winners alone seem really bold to me!! I am also assuming u are saying Philly(since Wash, NYG are out) then the last spot coming from the South(NO, Car, Atl)??

Wow! it sure does take a secure guy to call out his own team. All other Steelers fans should take notice, this is how you deal with your problem of accepting the harsh reality that times are a changing. I think they have meetings & a 12 step process for situations like this... First step: admitting that these are not the steelers of old. 2nd step: No matter how much we talk about the "past" this will not automatically make our team better. Once your able to do that, we'll go into more fun ones like; "if we do nothing to improve in the off-season, our team will not be as good".
no win s
This article also does a nice job of why its a waste of time to talk about how difficult a team's schedule is going to be... there are no easy victories in this league, regardless of who your playing.
