One of the things that drives us crazy about preseason NFL predictions is that the so-called experts (us included) tend to take the safe path, assuming that the good teams will still be good — and likewise picking only one team from the AFC (usually the Bengals) and one team from the NFC (usually the Lions) that will surprise us all.
But history tells us that there typically will be 50-percent turnover in the playoff field.
So this means that, of the 12 teams that made the playoffs in 2007, it’s a safe bet that six of them won’t return in 2008. And that they’ll be replaced by six that didn’t make it a year ago.
Is it a guarantee? Hardly. But it’s hard to ignore the fact that so many teams typically don’t get back to the postseason field, and that so many failures find a way to succeed in the next season.
Recognizing this reality, the challenge then is to try to identify the six teams that won’t make it back to the playoffs, and then to peg the six non-playoff teams that will fare far better in 2008. And this spawned an idea for a three-part series of SportingNews.com columns — one that lists the six playoff teams from 2007 that won’t return, one that lists the six non-playoff teams that will make it to the postseason, and one listing six teams that didn’t make it last year, and won’t make it this year.
In pegging the half-dozen who’ll fall out of the playoff pack, I tried to be objective and fair. In so doing, I’ve now ensured that I’ll receive a stream of unfriendly e-mails from Steelers fans and Packers fans from now until the date that either or both teams are eliminated from postseason contention.
And if either or both teams qualify for the playoffs, I just might never hear the end of it.
Of course, I’m used to taking a foolish bold risk. I predicted that the Steelers wouldn’t make the playoffs the year after they won Super Bowl XL, and I didn’t hear the end of it . . . until the Steelers didn’t make the playoffs the year after they won Super Bowl XL.
Anyway, the full list of teams is right here. We don’t expect to get them all right. But if we accept the premise that six of the twelve teams won’t get back, it’s inevitable that fans of six teams who were spoiled by a playoff run a year ago will be disappointed in 2008.
Even if one of the teams that might not make it back played in the Super Bowl.

I’m a Steeler fan and I don’t know that you’re that far off. Specials teams and the inability to stop people late in the season concern me more than the line at this point. I reserve the right to reconsider my opinion if Ben is sacked 9 times in the opener.

How am I gonna get mad over stuff that doesn’t even make sense, i.e. “Rodgers must suck, why else would they draft Brohm?”
Well, why then would they draft a backup WR almost a full round before Brohm?
Saying that thinking about the NFC Championship loss will hamstring them is also bizarre. No one thinks about old games during games. That’s booth-speak, wanna-be pundit B.S. Or do you think the Patriots lost last year’s Super Bowl because they were thinking about their AFC Championship loss to the Colts the year before? Give me a break.

Fan is short for Fanatic, and that’s exactly how some of us act. We always have the answer. A perfect example is how we always think we know who is going to be a bust and who is going to be great in the Draft. However there’s a reason we (me included) are not employed by a team. We all tend to forget that sometimes.

With due respect, I think it is crazy to pick against the Steelers this year. Cincinnati may not have Chad and their defense will likely be worse than last year. Baltimore can’t score more than 14 points a game and their corners need to call it quits. Cleveland is a fraud. The Bengals handled them pretty easily late in the year when Cleveland had to win. Pittsburgh is the only legitimate contender in the division this year.

i am not one of those “mad” fans, but i can’t help but wonder, on a nfl “rumor mill” blog, what exactly is the point of this meaningless exercise?
i mean, you claimed not to do a mock draft because it was pointless, you claimed to not give grades out after the draft because it’s incomplete, yet you dare to fathom a “guess” as to what teams don’t and do make the playoffs next year. why? just doesn’t make alot of sense.

As a Steeler fan, I certainly understand your logic. The problem is, someone from the AFCN will make the playoffs. Maybe its me, but I don’t see any of the other 3 stepping up. The Steelers, by default at 9-7 +/- 1.

You have the Giants as not making the playoffs? Lets see. They lost Gibril Wilson, and more than made up it with FA and the draft. They also lost an impact player when Mitchell left. But remember Kiwanuka? Also remember that they got to the SB without Shockey. He will be looking to prove something. And last year’s rookies (Boss, Ross, and Smith) will only get better. Giants win the division this year.

go ahead cout the steelers out. it will just give us the reason to go out and kick major ass this season. and besides Faneca is HIGHLY over-rated. Our line will be solid and with the new additions tot he team we are going to own the division. Beside Faneca will be like every other stiller that leaves and goes to anoth team, you will never hear his name again. Just like Kimo and Randel-el

I’m not sure you are wrong about the Steelers.
We’re playing the toughest schedule, period. And our offensive line is a huge question mark.
On the other hand, the Bungles are imploding (like every other year), the Browns have been exposed, and the Ravens have a problem with offensive production.
We might just back into the playoffs thanks to our crappy division rivals.
Oh, and good selections — at least, from a “this will create a shitstorm, thus directing traffic to Sporting News!” perspective.

Wow! it sure does take a secure guy to call out his own team. All other Steelers fans should take notice, this is how you deal with your problem of accepting the harsh reality that times are a changing. I think they have meetings & a 12 step process for situations like this… First step: admitting that these are not the steelers of old. 2nd step: No matter how much we talk about the “past” this will not automatically make our team better. Once your able to do that, we’ll go into more fun ones like; “if we do nothing to improve in the off-season, our team will not be as good”.
no win s
This article also does a nice job of why its a waste of time to talk about how difficult a team’s schedule is going to be… there are no easy victories in this league, regardless of who your playing.

So from the NFC you are saying that the only two returning playoff teams are the YUCS & COWGIRLS?? Wow this is very surprising to me! North(Minn, Chi, Det) will be in as division winner & West(SF, Ari, Stl)!! Those two division winners alone seem really bold to me!! I am also assuming u are saying Philly(since Wash, NYG are out) then the last spot coming from the South(NO, Car, Atl)??

Seems simple to me. Steeler’s have the toughest schedule I’ve ever seen, bar none. But someone from the AFCN will make the playoffs. The Brown’s are overrated and the Steeler’s line is a big question. Could go either way but I’d bet on the Steeler’s pull through.
Green Bay played one of the weakest schedules last year. Luckily Favre is gone because against their two legitimate opponents (Cowboys and Giants) he looked just terrible. They’ve got lots of talented youth but just can’t see them making the cut this year.

The theory that Brohm was drafted because the Packers don’t feel that Rodgers is the answer is flawed. They had to either pick up a has-been veteran or a new guy because either way they need some depth at that position.

I think the steelers are going to surprise some people and themselves. Marvel is going to be healthier than he was at the end of the year, Chris K should be ok, Simmons is Solid, Colon is Average. The biggest difference should be Hartwig, not because I think he is going to blow people right off the line of scrimmage, but hopefully he is a bit smarter than Mahan and will call the assignments better and not misread his own. The other part of the O line is run blocking has never been a problem, and hopefully Mendenhall/Sweed lessen teams desire to blitz.
Defensively the only thing to worry about is one of the end’s going down to injury. I think the Polamalu/Clark combo should be back and I’m looking forward to seeing Woodley/Harrison pressuring and Bruce Davis situationally.
My prediction is 10-6 after slugging through a tough schedule and a first round playoff win.

Gigantic Steelers fan…I can’t argue with your logic, and any rational fan will agree with me.
But, Walrus made a good point; someone from that division has to go to the playoffs, and I didn’t see enough consistency from Derek Anderson to nudge the champs off their divisional throne. To go along with your recent history thought process, no team has won back-to-back AFC North titles (AFC Central not included).
Arguments can be made on both sides. It’s a good column

florio, you don’t give Steelers fans enough credit. sure, there are a few goofball fans in every town, but most Steeler fans are pretty realistic. most of us know (1) our OL was our achilles heel last year, and it’s likely going to be worse this year, (2) it’s a Pittsburgh tradition started by Bill Cowher to have bad special teams, (3) we have other issues like DL depth, tough schedule, etc. Bottom line, Steelers fans won’t give you grief about this article, we know our best chance of making the playoffs is simply because our division is mediocre right now.
