We’re told that, in reality, Bears running back Cedric Benson missed only one day of voluntary workouts.
He missed Monday because he was meeting with his lawyer in Austin, Texas, due to that unfortunate incident from earlier in the month.
Benson returned on Tuesday, but since the media wasn’t given access to practice until Wednesday, they generally didn’t know that he had returned.

Clearly Benson doesn’t have it together off the field yet (I really want to hear that audio just because of you, Florio), but I’ll be very curious to see what he does on it this season.
Even though it hasn’t been seriously discussed (and Lovie Smith attempted to quell what discussion there was with the “Cedric Benson is our starter ‘right now’” comment), I still can’t help but feel it’s now or never for Benson - as a highly-paid starter, anyways. I don’t think his missing one practice is going to influence the situation at all, but it’s hard not to wonder where Benson will be if Forte has a stellar camp.

And not only because of Forte, Dox. Garrett Wolfe took a significant step from last year’s first preseason game to the last. He also took another significant step from the beginning to the end of the regular season. With a 3rd round pick invested in a guy that’s showing steady improvement, it seems unlikely he’ll be leaving after one season.
Then there’s Adrian Peterson (not THAT Adrian Peterson). A solid backup & change-of-pace back that’s a bonafide special teams stud, on a team that highly values it’s special teams and has lost several guys that helped give Chicago the best special teams in the league 2 years running. (And no, the term special teams stud is not an oxymoron).
I really have a hard time seeing Benson on the roster opening day. Carrying four RB’s seems like a waste to me, especially when that roster spot could be used to hold onto a promising QB or WR.

Speaking of Chicago, who should my Bulls draft?
Derrick Rose, or Michael Beasley?
My vote goes to Beasley.
P.S. Gotta have sympathy for Cedric Benson … except for his NFL running style, in which if there is a blade of grass taller than 1 inch … he shall fall to the ground.

Maybe I am not following the NFL as closely as I used to, but the moment that stands out the most in my mind about Benson’s pro career was when he sobbed like a girl at the NFL Draft.
He showed glimpses in 2006 of being a top 12-15 caliber back, but that’s a hardly a complimentary thing to say about a RB taken fourth overall.

Will the NFL ever change their pseudo-ways? Contracts that everyone knows the final year or two aren’t real, voluntary workouts that aren’t voluntary, etc.
Does it all comes to down to the dysfunctional NFLPA?

Garrett Wolfe …. PLEASE!!! I never saw an ounce of improvement and I’m pretty sure I was watching the same games.
Benson won’t be on the final roster …. PLEASE!!! He will be on the final roster and he’ll probably return to the role he had in 2005 & 2006 as the complimentary back to Thomas Jones (this time with Forte as the starter).
But, he will be on the roster, which is a shame because what Cedric Benson sorely needs is to be cut and get a fresh start somewhere else if he is to have any chance of turning his career around.

For you youngsters out there, just take a good look at ex- Longhorn Earl Campbell and then take a look at ex-’Horn Cedric Benson. Act accordingly.

Has everyone overlooked the fact that Ced’s contract is coming up soon…how does EVERY player in the NFL play that year? I am expecting him to show huge improvement in every facet of the game this season, paycheck time is drawing near…he has to make sure who ever he gets traded to or picked up by is going to want him based on the “what did you do last year” methodology…

Hey Ditkas Cigar, you must be blind. PLEASE, turn on a fan while viewing Bears games next season to clear out the cigar haze. By the end of the season Wolfe was consistantly picking up rushers and blitzers the garbage line couldn’t (even though they’d flatten the little guy), as well as making excellent receptions that Cedric “Hands of Stone” Benson could only dream of.
Oh yeah, Wolfe also made defenders look silly while juking them outta their cleats. When was the last time CedBen did that? Hmm…umm…exactly. There really isn’t a reason to KEEP Cedric on the roster since both Wolfe and Peterson have shown the ability to produce as well as Benson and by the way AREN’T HURT EVERY SEASON!
