Texans receiver Andre Johnson, who missed plenty of the 2007 season with a knee injury, will miss the rest of the 2008 offseason workouts after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on the same bum joint.
“We went back and forth with the knee throughout the offseason,” coach Gary Kubiak said Monday. “It wasn’t feeling the way [Andre] wanted it to feel. So we tried to do some things, some rest and those types of things, to get it better.
“He wasn’t really comfortable coming out of [mini-camp], so we said, ‘Hey, let’s go scope it and see if there are any issues. We want you to feel comfortable.’ Everything was fine. They cleaned it up. Now he feels good about it. He’s not going to be hurt by missing some of these reps, so we’ll just get him back to 100 percent and get him ready to go.”
Johnson is expected to be at 100 percent by the start of training camp.
“Yes, it’s a concern, but at the same time, injuries happen,” Johnson said. “You just have to do what you have to do to make those injuries better.”
Johnson is signed through 2014, and there has yet to be talk of the Texans giving up on him. But it’s an issue that the team eventually will need to consider, if Johnson’s knee doesn’t get any better — or continues to deteriorate. Every time a knee gets “cleaned up,” there’s less cartilage left in it. And once the cartilage is gone, it’s fairly difficult for the guy to continue playing.

Give up on him? Laughable.

look, I understand that it’s popular for newsies/bloggers to circulate rumor about a team giving up on a player - but there is absolutely zero reason to bring this up when talking about andre johnson. he’s easily one of the top 5 receivers in the game, and there is no basis for any front-office discontent or doubt. the guy had a balky knee and got it scoped - ok, next story.
if and when johnson is unable to contribute to the team, then let’s start talking about cutting him. we’d also be wise to remember that he came back strong from that balky knee last year - which is even more impressive if he didnt feel that everything was ok.

Give up on Andre? Crazy talk! I didn’t give up on him while he sat on my Fantasy Football roster for seven weeks, and the man came back strong and rewarded my patience. I hope I can steal him in the fourth round or so in this year’s draft, he’s a true #1 receiver all the way.
Get well soon Andre…

Why not take out all the cartilage and then he can cash in on a new deal with the Raiders, just like Javon Walker.

Huh?? Top 5 in the game? What the hell has Johnson ever done? He’s better than Owens, Moss, Harrison, Wayne, Plaxico, Chad, Larry Fitz…the list goes on. I ain’t saying he isnt talented, but the guy has quite the injury history. Your not top 5 if you cant get on the field….

He missed 7 games in last year and 3 games in 05. What he has done is catch 103 passes in 2006 and score 8 touchdowns in half a season last year.Pretty sure they won’t give upon him.

Johnson, as with every WR, is only as good as the QB throwing the rock his way…and the Texans haven’t exactly helped out in that area…

Regardless of whether they’re giving up on him or not, the latest surgery is a bad, bad sign.
I’ll be sure to let another fantasy owner take Johnson because I don’t believe this will be his last surgery in 2008.

I’m confused; I was under the impression that Andre Johnson’s surgery had been successful. I mean, aren’t we told that EVERY surgery performed on an NFL player is successful?! Or maybe it’s considered a successful surgery as long as they don’t, ya know, DIE!
