The Dallas Cowboys are close to signing cornerback Terence Newman to a long-term deal, according to the Dallas Morning News.
Newman is entering the final year of his rookie contract, and he’s due to earn a base salary of $1,416,417.
His value on the open market isn’t clear. The 2003 first-round pick qualified for his first Pro Bowl in 2007. But he’ll turn 30 on September 4 of this year. And not many 30-year-old cornerbacks get deals worth $10 million per year in free agency.
Archer writes that the Cowboys are trying to get the deal done before owners possibly choose to opt out of the Collective Bargaining agreement two years early, since any contracts done thereafter “would have to follow more stringent salary-cap rules set up for 2010 and beyond.”
This statement is extremely confusing to us, and it will merit a post of its own. Just as soon as we figure all of this out.

I got the answer to the confusion.
Terence Newman gets boatloads of money. And rightfully so.

I’m not the most up to date guy on the Cowgirls, but Newman was drafted in 2003 and he’ll be 30? Was he on the John Blutarsky plan?

I believe contracts are only allowed to go up within a certain % every year, and you can’t prorate bonuses as much as you can today.

Not sure, but I didn’t think the CBA early cancellation would affect contracts in 2008. Maybe they meant that Dallas wanted to get the deal done before the 09 season, which, should the CBA be cancelled early, would be the infamous ‘year before an uncapped year’ in the CBA. In 09 (should the heretofore mentioned CBA be opted out early’) then there are some interesting contract issues. For instance, only 50% of bonus in a new contract in 09 can be moved outside of the 09 cap and that portion can only be spread across 4 years regardless of the length of the contract. Also, I believe that players do not become ‘vested veterans’ until 6 years vice the current 4, so players on the Cowboys like Barber, Canty, and Newman would be Restricted free agents in 09, not unrestricted free agents. Something that might irritate them greatly I think.

Newman started school late due to a September birthday, flunked the 4th grade for health reasons if I remember correctly and red shirted a year in college.

Newman & Pacman at each corner, Mike Jenkins at the nickel, Henry and Ken Hamlin at safety (No Roy). That would definitely give Dallas one of the most talented secondaries in the league.
