The Dallas Cowboys are close to signing cornerback Terence Newman to a long-term deal, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Newman is entering the final year of his rookie contract, and he’s due to earn a base salary of $1,416,417.

His value on the open market isn’t clear.  The 2003 first-round pick qualified for his first Pro Bowl in 2007.  But he’ll turn 30 on September 4 of this year.  And not many 30-year-old cornerbacks get deals worth $10 million per year in free agency.

Archer writes that the Cowboys are trying to get the deal done before owners possibly choose to opt out of the Collective Bargaining agreement two years early, since any contracts done thereafter “would have to follow more stringent salary-cap rules set up for 2010 and beyond.”

This statement is extremely confusing to us, and it will merit a post of its own.  Just as soon as we figure all of this out.
